sharp shuttle
#

Nothing tyc, relax. I need to force change in our culture around aerial security at critical infra sites, starting locally.

alpine pumice
#

Sometimes I wonder what the next generation of war will be like... like what is after drones? I feel like drones are just end game. It'll just be smaller and smaller drones that can do more and more damage. Like the size of a fly or something. Maybe nanobots?

vivid flower
#

Okay u of o is doing that

sharp shuttle
#

Thats my real unbiased answer

alpine pumice

space wars

sharp shuttle

Yep.

They are starting a program to assess state owned infra that had no prior assessments. Power stations and the like were explicitly mentioned

sharp shuttle

sharp shuttle
#

Yeah true

vivid flower
#

He is also a really ambitious guy

sharp shuttle
#

Drones can deliver cyber weapons through wifi attacks.

#

Thats why i say drones

alpine pumice
sharp shuttle
#

Drone are the de facto delivery solution for malware to ICS, whether it be wifi or usb dead drops.

vivid flower
#

Will you at least think about a pitch

#

If you wanna start locally this is whats happening locally

#

University students are gonna assess infra its cheaper than a third party doing it

#

They already have a lot of clients

alpine pumice
#

I support critical infrastructure locally and it's absolutely bonkers how behind these facilities are on security and how slow they are to take any action to rectify it.

vivid flower
#

Get people studying your drone stuff and we will have a lot of people adopt your paradigm

sharp shuttle
#

tyc idk what you are talking about if you have details and arent just talking out of your ass I will entertain a 3 hour drive to talk to someone if it means something will actually happen

Where do you guys think pentesting is going over the next 5-10 years? What areas of testing do you think might drop off more towards automation? personally alot of webapps I test seem to be very hardened and I'm thinking of pushing more towards internal testing and cloud

worthy cargo
#

everything will be automated! with AI

#

But engineers will always be needed

#

cloud security engineers

#

security engineers

#

etc. etc.

frigid mountain
#

oh good

#

my muting is over

worthy cargo
#

Why did you get muted?

native plume
#

Well vibe coding is a thing and pretty much a lot of startups are relying on it
I don't think they're that secure

worthy cargo
#

Depends

frigid mountain
#

I accidentally commented some Notorious BIG lyrics without sufficiently censoring by 100% accident. I deleted one word but missed the other one.

ashen flare
#

you cant automate AD testing though

worthy cargo
#

If you get a solid software engineer to vibe code, it's fast and secure as they know what's insecure and can pinpoint that in the generated code

frigid mountain
#

you like coding? Wanna see something sick ?

native plume
#

The ones I've seen always test for happy case scenarios only lol

ashen flare
#

I could be wrong, but in cases where a webapp is so hardened that there is literally just missing headers, or the server header is enabled, or theres some low owasp a07 vulns, these can all be automated

vivid flower
ashen flare
#

There is specialised web testing ofcourse and more appsec type stuff, but for just your standard owasp top 10 testing I don't think it has much of a manual future but I could be super wrong

vivid flower
#

Using ai to assist not as a replacement

native plume
#

In every webapp there will be always low hanging fruits and some really hidden stuff

ashen flare
#

azure and AD / entra ID seem like more stable career paths

#

you can't really automate that its too complex and the impact of it going wrong is too high

eternal mango
#

That's what they said about rolling down a hill until someone made the wheel

#

Joking aside.. "it's too complex" won't hold up for long any more imho

ashen flare
eternal mango
#

I'm not saying we're all going to be replaced

#

More I agree with tyc, ai to assist, not to replace

#

We've come from Will Smith "eating" spaghetti to.. well.. where we are today, in TWO years

#

Just TWO years

#

Either we bust out hard, or the future is freakin exicting / scary

#

Just my 2c anyway, there's no right answer

#

If we knew the right answer, I'd be in the bookies

ancient ferry
ashen flare
#

I would have just gone with what I like, but with the "threat" of that being automated, im more open now

ancient ferry
ashen flare
#

internal / AD / cloud seemed like a more promising direction but idk

eternal mango
#

I'm not sure to be honest. I'm no security professional, I'm an engineer by trade, security is a hobby

#

Sorry, not a very good answer

ashen flare
#

no worries šŸ˜„ I appreciate your answers regardless

native plume
ashen flare
#

I think infra route might be best and maybe try for actual red teaming in 4-5 years

native plume
#

And of course I remind Claude to not tell me its life story

#

And yeah btw AI sure won't make these stupid moves as in allowing SQL injection

But sometimes getting the whole business logic right might be challenging in some projects

You should understand the business logic of the app you want to test, you might have better chances this way

desert cargo
#

Anyone got experience with these kind of ctf's which start tmr?

ashen flare
# native plume And yeah btw AI sure won't make these stupid moves as in allowing SQL injection ...

Burp pro basic scans will pick up low hanging fruit in about 30 minutes already so its already automated to an extent, ofcourse web testing rn is a combination of automated and manual testing and there is often something you can pick up that burp can't or get there first, but I suspect in the future as automation evolves implementing things like AI, apart from specialized appsec areas, that it may be fully automated

#

and there is also just that companies are getting more and more mature

#

some web applications are just secure

#

genuinely

desert cargo
native plume
ashen flare
# desert cargo Until an exploit is found xD

That can happen with subsequent updates to the application where new code is introduced etc but generally it will remain "secure", or a better word is hardened, especially with the surrounding mitigations like WAF and CSP

#

CSP is often misconfigured atm with unsafe inline directives etc, but in the next few years we'll see stuff with fully implemented CSP

#

combined with WAF

#

that is a very difficult target, not for threat actors because they have "unlimited time", but for testers with time constraints its a different story

heady sage
ashen flare
#

That said, there are often very custom webapps, where even burp pro cant work with it because it just spams false positives, and even if AI did "take over" web testing (im not saying this, just that alot can be automated), you would need testers to validate its findings

#

Adversary emulation is the best thing to get into, but its difficult, as atleast from my experience, its a much more senior type of testing

#

pentesting is a lot easier

heady sage
elder inlet
#

Cheers y'all

heady sage
#

These things benefit from a human touch if I’m being honest

native plume
#

Also AI is limited by context too (how much info it can handle at a time)

One thing I learned about traveling the world, mostly in the Asian countries, those kids don’t want to be doctors. They do it to bring their family out of poverty. Their parents save all their money to send their kid to college. And that kid has no choice but to study to honor his parents. And in the end he is a doctor that makes millions.

Western countries have this idea that ā€œdo what you loveā€ as if drawing cute cat pictures is gonna somehow pay the bills. Get older, you’ll learn that when you don’t make the money you should be making that you’ll learn whatever to pay those bills .
