Burp pro basic scans will pick up low hanging fruit in about 30 minutes already so its already automated to an extent, ofcourse web testing rn is a combination of automated and manual testing and there is often something you can pick up that burp can't or get there first, but I suspect in the future as automation evolves implementing things like AI, apart from specialized appsec areas, that it may be fully automated

and there is also just that companies are getting more and more mature

You have to check more than just request/response

That can happen with subsequent updates to the application where new code is introduced etc but generally it will remain "secure", or a better word is hardened, especially with the surrounding mitigations like WAF and CSP

CSP is often misconfigured atm with unsafe inline directives etc, but in the next few years we'll see stuff with fully implemented CSP

that is a very difficult target, not for threat actors because they have "unlimited time", but for testers with time constraints its a different story

That said, there are often very custom webapps, where even burp pro cant work with it because it just spams false positives, and even if AI did "take over" web testing (im not saying this, just that alot can be automated), you would need testers to validate its findings

Adversary emulation is the best thing to get into, but its difficult, as atleast from my experience, its a much more senior type of testing

One thing I learned about traveling the world, mostly in the Asian countries, those kids don’t want to be doctors. They do it to bring their family out of poverty. Their parents save all their money to send their kid to college. And that kid has no choice but to study to honor his parents. And in the end he is a doctor that makes millions.

Western countries have this idea that “do what you love” as if drawing cute cat pictures is gonna somehow pay the bills. Get older, you’ll learn that when you don’t make the money you should be making that you’ll learn whatever to pay those bills .

Look I got laid off a month ago, it slapped me in the face that I should have a skill I can fall back on. So I decided cybersecurity. Now I’m not all about that “passion” stuff. I’m a realist. I need something I can learn in two years from home. And land a remote job at best and get paid well after a few years. I know the first job won’t pay well. But I won’t stop learning.

You're going to end up working with people that are going to be like "can you explain it again?" Or "how do I use git clone or <insert common technology>?"

Btw cyber isn't entry level as in you should have some IT knowledge before trying to get into cyber.

I have some knowledge. I’m just brushing up. I took internetworking back in high school and was a computer science major in college but dropped out.

I learned C+ and A+ and failed my ccna test.

But that test was quite hard for an 18 yr old

What specifically do you wanna git gud at hacking tho?

I work in Pest control. I do fumigations. I have to carry 3 to 4 250lb tarps on my shoulders up a ladder and onto steep roofs.

I had to remove a 85 lb dead dog from some A holes kitchen the other day. And a dead opossum from under a house that stank. I crawl under houses a lot and trench around homes for hours. Writing on paper sitting at a desk sounds glamourous.

I don’t know man. I’m new to all this. But I just wanna do this. Something I’ve always wanted to learn. How to hack. Or at least how it works. And the goal is always to protect a company from getting hacked.
