Today I had a “fun” little adventure with Bind9 and DNSSEC. I restarted the server and… nothing worked. Zones wouldn’t load, signatures were expired, and rndc dnssec kept throwing cryptic errors like “zone not loaded” and “no non-KSK DNSKEY found”. After some digging, it turned out old keys were still hanging around in zone files, some key files were missing, and the KSK/ZSK situation was a mess. Every time I thought I had it fixed, another error popped up. Went through all zone files and removed outdated $INCLUDE references. Regenerated fresh KSK and ZSK keys for each zone. Re-signed the zones properly with dnssec-signzone. Reloaded Bind9, verified with rndc dnssec -status, and finally everything came up clean.

Today was a fun day with Bind9 DNS and DNSSEC. I swear. One day it's email, another day it's DNS.

"WAN" basically just means "the network outside whichever network we're currently in"

whereas "LAN" means "the network we're currently in"

If you're looking at this entire configuration like we see here, you'd call the /12 the WAN.

But if you're looking at it from the perspective of a host on the /12 which doesn't know the /16 exists, you'd probably refer to it as the LAN.

Idk if that helps or makes it more confusing but "WAN" is just "the outer network" in a situation with two hierarchical networks like this.
