After 12 years of running the same email configuration, I found myself facing a critical decision: continue patching security vulnerabilities on Exim 4.93, or bite the bullet and upgrade to the latest stable version. The problem? My original configuration notes were long gone, the tutorial I'd followed had vanished from the internet, and Exim 4.96 introduced strict taint-checking that broke virtually every pipe transport configuration in existence.
I had built layers of security; Proxmox Mail Gateway in front, firewalls locked down, relay restrictions in place. But security by obscurity isn't security. Those CVEs weren't going away, and I knew the right answer was to upgrade. So I started what would become four nights of constant debugging, research, and rebuilding.
The Taint Problem
Exim 4.96 introduced taint-checking to prevent injection attacks. Any user-supplied data (like email addresses) became "tainted" and couldn't be used directly in system commands. This broke my Dovecot delivery setup immediately. The error was brutal: "Tainted arg 2 for dovecot_vmail transport command." Even after properly validating users through router lookups, Exim refused to pass the data to dovecot-lda.
I tried everything; quote_local_part (which doesn't work for domains), using $local_part_data and $domain_data from router lookups (still tainted in certain contexts), restructuring my entire router configuration three times from scratch. Each attempt seemed promising until I hit another taint error.
The breakthrough came from understanding that Exim's taint checking applies to command-line arguments, not environment variables. I created a simple wrapper script at /usr/local/bin/dovecot-lda-wrapper that reads from environment variables instead of command arguments. The Exim transport now passes LOCAL_PART and DOMAIN as environment variables, the wrapper script assembles them safely, and dovecot-lda receives clean, untainted data. Security is maintained because the validation still happens in the routers; we're just changing how the data is passed.
Just when I thought I was done, I discovered Exim silently skips DKIM signing when it encounters tainted data. No errors, no warnings; just unsigned emails landing in spam folders. The fix required creating a lookup file mapping domains to their DKIM key paths, using the same technique: lsearch lookups that return untainted data. Now the same /etc/exim4/vmail_domains file serves triple duty; domain validation for routing (using ret=key), DKIM key lookup (using the value), and maintaining a single source of truth for all virtual domains.
I gave up and started over three times. Each time I thought I understood the problem, another taint error would surface. Building custom Exim packages from source on Ubuntu, testing configuration changes that could break production email, debugging cryptic errors at 2 AM; none of it was easy. But perseverance pays off.
