In case of cows in particular, they are sacred to us and we worship them.
Then, according to the Bhagavad Gita, food categories like meat fall under those which amplify the Tamas guna in your body (which means qualities like lethargy, ignorance, confusion etc). Technically so does other things like pizzas and burgers, and other junk food, but we usually pass on that because it's important to balance that with a Satvik diet, which means pure veg stuff which promotes good health. So we don't usually care that much about Western food or food from other countries, but meat is a hard no in general for us.
