If it bothers you run sudo openvpn <your config> with nohup
Then kill the process to end it

personally i've been using arch for suuuper long, but honestly a simple kali vm does the job just really fine, the real goal is just being comfy with your setup and not wasting time because of it
i use kali vms or kali in docker pretty often and it works great, everything you need is there
