The reason halo 4 is a reboot and NOT a sequel is due to how the lore worked in the halo trilogy, 1-3 was about humanity discovering an artifact in desperation and finding out they inherited it due to their own ancestry. Surprisingly the terminals conflict on "humans are forerunners" and "humans arent forerunners", a promo comic for the game also confirms the info that humans are forerunner, same with guilty spark at both the maw in CE and the end of 3, so even at the worst case, halo 4 would just confirm one of the two later on, but led to contradictions compared to the previous trilogy.
