I played both Reach and MW2 '09 on launch, and I gotta say-there's a damn good reason I don't have much, if any, respect for Reach's depiction of a world in flames, and that's because a game that came out a year beforehand kicked in both of Reach's knees before it had a chance to walk in terms of depicting that.

I like Halo, I wouldn't have stuck with it this long if I didn't, but Reach's modern glorification as being this mecca of Halo games depicting global scale conflicts with a 'realistic' and 'gritty' light is just baffling to me in hindsight.

Spartan Tanaka's an interesting character to me because she's one of the few Spartans we know of who actually had to grow up on a glassed world and had heavy interaction with Insurrectionist Elements.

She's unique in that she wasn't raised on an appetite of stability like most IVs; Her life started out fine, as she was the prodigal daughter of a mining mogul on her homeworld and was effectively set for life in terms of prospects. The Covenant glassed her home city while her and her dad were in a mine on the other side of the planet, so she was spared purely due to dumb luck while her brothers and mother got killed instantly. She and her dad had to survive on a world undergoing a glassing winter the hard way, and she learned hard lessons from her father's mistakes of mercy and survival.

Tanaka's birthright and good life were stolen by the war, her parents were killed by the war, and she watched herself get orphaned. Everything she had left she watched die, and it's no small wonder that she finds herself struggling to be outspoken and sociable. She's an incredibly skilled combat engineer and soldier who got her Spartandom for volunteering to fight alongside-and exceeding the abilities of-ODSTs, but her social life suffers from her pain, and she hides a lot of her emotions because she's more comfortable around machines than people. She's understanding of the plight of the fringe anti-UNSC groups, which is also a rarity among Spartans.

There's two specific lines that stuck with me; One line is on Meridian, where Tanaka monologues at a specific overlook that showcases a massive expanse of glass, and even though she knows that it's not Minab, Meridian still looks just like her home to her, and she can't see anything else.

The other is Cortana mentioning that Tanaka's psych profile is hurt enough that, as an insult, Cortana states that she wouldn't even trust Tanaka around knives, let alone fully functional MJOLNIR-implying Tanaka has some serious demons in her heart from her life. She's a deep and hurt character who people ignored and insulted because she gave a middling speech.

I could talk all day about it, really. I have a really soft spot in my heart for characters like her.

Of the three converging and frustratingly disapparate storylines, the two that have the closest 'loops' that are not already complete as can be are 5 and Infinite.

the ping is on by default and since 2015 you're the first person to ask me to turn it off, even back when the reply system was basically just quoting someone's message and pinging them people never mentioned it. and I personally think that pinged replies make conversations easier to follow for me, but that may just be because of my autism
