And the games get better and better about it as they go on.

There's a greater awareness of problems, and that can cause you to find problems where there aren't any. Or make mountains out of molehills. The world's got a lot of problems, and a lot of hope's lost for one reason or another.

But since last gen, we got more of everything I listed, now you do know every single detail about a development cycle, you see how the game comes together from the skeleton, and the more people see, the more skepticism they generate, we have tons of videos for just one upcoming game, and a lot of times now you do know what to expect when a game comes out

Those original trilogy marines were funny, crass, politically incorrect. They had a certain 2000s vibe that’s been lacking since Reach. Great voice actors. But among all the humor, they also played an important role in making Chief (and the player) feel special and near invincible. The way the marines would react to Chief and treat him like a demigod. The way they looked up to him.

Especially since in CE for people who didn’t read a book or whatever, nothing was ever really explained about who Chief was. So really one of the only things that established he was special is the way the marines would react to him and hold him in reverence.

Well I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to directly quote. But there was some stuff that could be considered in poor taste today by some.

Most of it was rare, and only showed up with the IWHBYD skull on.

You can show just about anything in modern games. It’s more so about the context than the content. If you show something for story purposes, no one cares, but if you make a joke out of something, that’s going to offend people. Case and point - those kinds of jokes haven’t been in the game since the 2000s. And I think you’d be hard pressed to find any game today from major publishers that have that kind of stuff in the game.

Though the Covenant did refer to him as demon. And it seems like there’s some pseudo religious themes and implications about Chief. Especially with the stuff where the Librarian (essentially a god in this story - higher being who served as a caretaker for life) specifically guiding him to his destiny and accelerating his evolution.

But even by mankind, there’s a lot of reverence for Chief. He’s seen as the savior of humanity (multiple times). A legend. And Spartans in general “never die” in their eyes. They are held in this place of high esteem above the typical man.
