yeah but the reason a lot of modern GPUs use 8 lanes of PCIe4 is because they only needed 8 lanes of PCIe3

so if you put a lot of 8 lane cards into a PCIe3 mother board, you are getting half the bandwidth but the same performance

and 8 lanes of PCIe3 = 4 lanes of PCIe4 in terms of bandwith

that will eventually become too little though
