Like the subtle environmental story telling of combat evolved. How you can find a downed pelican shortly after it dropped off reinforcements to you, but it's never part of the story or no one mentions it in the game. Never found anything that sparked curiosity like that for more of the story in the later games

I'd argue that online game was just as competitive back then as it is now, it's just that the meta for games become figured out quickly, due to streamers and Youtubers. However, I do agree that online console gaming has become stifled and overfocused on monetisation. PC gaming might be more your thing? People actually talk and indie games develop some intricate communites.
