Please remove the AI generated content entirely from the game. I really want to get these DLCs, but I will not so long as this remains

With this devblog and yes I have read it all it seems that the singleplayer portion of the game is getting shafted in order to produce more divisions for the multiplayer crowd. None of these DLCs have any value to the solo players. The only way to make use of the content outside of skirmish is to mod the existing AGs but that is a bit too tedious. Is it not possible to provide at least 1 AG to the tribute DLCs ,so that the solo players can enjoy them outside of skirmish? Are there any plans to have for example an AG editor in the future given that the majority of the player base is solo? The AG mode has been left without any updates or improvements for some time and these news do not inspire confidence for the future of this game mode since the plans for the future can easily change.

this feels fine for me as an AG main, i can just play the new divisions in skirmish against AI or friends while i wait for new AG, and even then i have most of the AGs to play on both redfor and blufor

As they said in the dev blog, work on the next AG projects already is being worked on, its not like they stopped working on it, but it will take its time. So filling that time with the easier to produce content from other team members is a good way to keep WARNO relevant, without the time pressure that the AG Delays created on Southag etc. before.

My logic is: Cypriot National Guard has a black bird on it’s crest, is non aligned, antagonistic towards Turkey and embargoed by US and UK, has a mix of equipment from Soviet Union, France and Brazil to name a few, and despite no air force can get air assets from Soviets in Syria through the ‘advisors’

So, I could say reluctant Greece:;they even withdrew from NATO military command from 1974 to 1980: "With NATO taking a hands-off approach, their refusal to intervene was seen as a complete betrayal, effectively handing Cyprus to Turkey and showing apparent favouritism, which has had a lingering effect, permanently tarnishing NATO’s reputation and popularity in Greece to this day.

As a direct result, Greece withdrew from NATO’s military command structure in August of 1974, meaning they would maintain political ties and contributions but no longer be militarily involved. During this time, Greece, under Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis, improved diplomatic and political relations with Eastern bloc countries, including the USSR, with deals being made on the supply of soviet oil and gas.

Greece moved towards a more independent style of foreign policy, not influenced by NATO, with a focus on peaceful coexistence. Karamanlis even visited Moscow in 1979. The purpose of this foreign policy approach was to grant Greece greater strategic leverage, showing NATO that Greece had other options if NATO support fell short.

Greece eventually rejoined the NATO military command structure in 1980. However, not all tensions disappeared. Karamanlis threatened a complete withdrawal from NATO in the same year if issues over Greece’s operational control in the Aegean Sea were not resolved."

But, I agree, it could be Cyprus as well, both have 2 very black birds in army emblem 😄

While I do agree that it's ideal to have an artist do everything (it gives the game more soul), I think going full 180 is impractical at this point and may actually be harmful to the game.

Plus if it's true that Steam's TOS says use of AI must be disclosed (and it angers you so much), then you can always go to the store page, use the small little flag icon and report the product. There's no correct criteria for such a report though, so you need to be creative.

I personally just don't get why so many vocally treat AI as if it's heresy.
Fact is it's just a simple tool. Data is inserted, some direction is given and a result is produced. Imo EUG uses AI very responsibly being very deliberate what data is inserted and which way it's steered.

For me the AI hate is akin to ELO hoarding.
People don't understand the tool and therefore hate it or misuse it.

Hell, my own pfp is AI made. Must I be held to the same standards and delete my pfp too?

I’m fairly AI tolerant as far as shit goes. I gave the benefit of the doubt for a lot of things Before the introduction of fully AI generated ‘’videos’’, and would have been fine with it prior. The trust I had with Eugen’s artistry is broken, and mending it requires remedying the use of this.

Inf. icons do not need AI. The game’s music doesn’t need AI. The game’s loading screens most certainly do not need AI. It breaks the trust in the integrity of the game at every level, and breaks down what artistic vision and energy this game had going for it. WARNO had a genuinely tightly focused sound and visual design.

Compare the first OST and Panzer’s ‘AI’ ‘’music’’. The difference in engagement is palpable-The one by AI is formulaic, unengaging, and limp. The music Running the Gauntlet sounds better-But, it is only a singular motif, doesn’t go anywhere, and is, again, exceedingly safe. And the change? A newer model. Compare the third OST, what it appears to be aping and the difference is stark! It builds up, steadily, with its motif, and Changes and reaches a satisfying and engaging peak, and builds back down to emptiness to transition. If making music is too hard, just license it-As they did with much of the first round of soundtrack!

There is a substantial loss of quality and vision, so why should I consume this if it will only continue to get less and less intentional, focused, and energetic?

left escarp
# summer sparrow I’m fairly AI tolerant as far as shit goes. I gave the benefit of the doubt for ...

EUG use of AI never broke my trust, or did they promise not to use it?
But I guess I'm in the minority judging by how many are vocally up in arms about all this.

Sure the use of AI is not needed, and I do admit full human art is usually better, but looking at the bigger picture AI art is faster and cheaper.
Would everyone have had more patience if EUG had to delay stuff, let's say collectively half a year, to make everything with human art?
I'm completely indifferent if we're talking about background stuff like loading screens, music, unit icons and portraits of random officers.

My main gripe with AI use is the fact that EUG seems to use AI without any human touch. Like they just insert the data, give a command to steer in the desired direction and press "again" until the result is satisfactory.
That's how we get generals with "fishbones" for ranks, unit icons with questionable uniform details etc

I personally play warno with the game soundtrack randomised on YT Music. I have no problems with any of the obvious AI music. In fact I quite dig some of it, like "Pathfinder."
But again, it's like they just took the result and used it without human touch. Imo "Pathfinder" is too open ended and could use something to finish it up/ make it better (at least i feel like it could be done with the lyrics).

I wouldn't call it a substantial loss in quality/vision. I'm playing warno for the gameplay, not the art. I mainly consume the gameplay and ignore the background. And I will continue to do so as rn nothing is stopping me.
At the very worst the sloppy use of AI makes warno from a 10/10 game to an 8/10 (imo).

In an Ideal World, preferably, yeah you would be.

AI (or lets be real here LLMs and the Gernerative slop falsely marketed as AI) is a massive bubble of failed technology, with a few applications as a tool in some limited sectors being kept up almost singlehandedly by nvidia. It's use is frankly an indicator of someones over all capabilities or more pertinently lack there of.

So in your ideal world AI/LLMs would be banned, if not outright criminalised. Got it.

If it's such a massive bubble then we better get ready for an economic crash of the century, because of all the investments going into it. Google is planning to build (or already is, idk) data centers with their own nuclear power plants.

If AI/LLMs are such a failed technology then how come we're seeing more and more of it? Like we are in the gaming industry.
I wouldn't be surprised if we can create full overhaul mods for games in the future using AI/LLMs.

Imo bad AI use is because of misuse due to lack of competence and not giving it the human touch.
When AI/LLMs first became prevelent I remember one artist who was using AI as the base and then going full photoshop on it, leaving only like 10% of the completed work unedited AI part. This is what I want EUG artists to do if they keep using AI/LLMs.

But enough about that.

So in your ideal world AI/LLMs would be banned, if not outright criminalised. Got it.

Weird strawman but okay, regulation is not banning or criminalizing.

If it's such a massive bubble then we better get ready for an economic crash of the century, because of all the investments going into it.

Literally yes, the AI bubble is the only thing keeping the US "economy" afloat and it's primed to devestate the lives of tens if not hundreds of millions of lives globally.

If AI/LLMs are such a failed technology then how come we're seeing more and more of it? Like we are in the gaming industry.

Because we're in a bubble? A bubble that is primarily driven by Nvidia, you know the company that has the entire gaming industry in a choke hold?

When AI/LLMs first became prevelent I remember one artist who was using AI as the base and then going full photoshop on it, leaving only like 10% of the completed work unedited AI part.

This means that person still built their work on stolen art that fed the AI's learning model.

As a "normal" person, can you try describing to me (someone who is obviously somewhat immune to the uncanny valley effect) what precisely do you find so appalling about AI/LLMs?

Fine! Besides the devestating Enviromental effects of its datacentres, besides the moral and ethical implications of trying to replace artists with a program that can be guided to not be subversive, besides the AI psychosis that is driving children to commit suicide and the mentally unwell to commit murder, BESIDES ALL THAT:

It outsources your cognitive thinking skills to billionaires and allows them to dictate the flow of information. It is elon musks brain chip with better PR. It continues to feed the lack of literacy plaguing america. It's modern day bread and circuses

Had to make a second post due to character limit

Well, at least in the military. IRL application of AI in a combat environment is producing good results as far as I hear.

As I said theres use for it in select sectors that can still make use of them in a regulated enviroment. Obviously the advancements in image detection and recognition are going to have military uses, especially for EO targeting systems.

Similarly, in a heavily maintained and structured model, it can do wonders for doctors diagnosing patients and acting as an aid to canvas known medical conditions.

However we already have governments around the world using AI to assemble and conduct kill missions, missions that then get shown to have hit innocents. Thats absurdly terrifying. Especially as those nations are showing more and more willingness to direct violence inwards.

I'm lucky enough to live in a nation that has maintained sanity but that makes watching as everyone down south rushes towards it all the more appalling.

Thank you for your answers!

I actually agree on all the moral and grey area problems plus that regulation is probably required to make sure AI/LLMs aren't abused in ways the wider public doesn't approve of.

I don't think the collateral damage to innocents was not a problem before AI helped with military targeting. From what I hear it's actually less of a problem thanks to AI. But it's useless to argue about it here since, let's be honest, it's early and data is still being collected and research is being done.
Do we blame the AI or the humans who made the decision to go through with it?

We're probably gonna have to agree to disagree.
You might have stopped contributing models to the modding scene, but you can't stop my worship of warno unless you present me with a better game.
I will buy all the incoming DLC for warno unless my financial situation sucks and it doesn't seem to go that way unless the nuclear apocalypse comes, but then we're all boned.

I barely use AI myself, since all I do on my PC is game.

Late stage capitalism: cash is king and numbers must go up.
EUG does have investors afaik. They needed money to start this entire thing without publishers.

How many examples do you think they needed to get their AI/LLM running?
Could it be possible they only used media from the era that's no longer copyrighted? Would that be ethically ok?

Because the way they found out one of the Black Birds is Albania is that someone found the reference image they used to display that soldier.

Ethically yes, functionally? Impossible, how would they get cold war assets from a time before the cold war? Copyright only expires 70 years after the artists death

They 100% did not make their own model it's WAAAAAAAAY out of their budget

left escarp
# grave vector > Would it be possible EUG actually officially acquired that licence/permission?...

How can we tell/know they're using existing commercial models?

I'm sorry if I come across as too persistent. I'm going this far because looking at the splash art now, starting from even the base game, and the fact that the in-game church skin has/had it's clock mirrored, AI/LLM art might have been part of warno earlier than some of us perceive.
We might be way past the point of no return. To the moment replacing all AI/LLM art might take something like a year or more to do and be completely impractical/unfeasible from EUG business point of view.

grave vector
#

This answer is vague and non specific but when you see enough examples you can start being able to guess which model is doing the work due to the AI self training off AI generated images, thats how the period of piss yellow tint happened. Like Quan said it's very likely just ChatGPT, I can pick that out due to how it renders and tints the facial features.

I'm not saying it hasn't been touched up by a real artist after generation but it's pretty distinct

If I was intentionally obtuse, oh trust me, I'd be a lot more annoying and trolly.

Because feeding a photo through AI/LLM in my head equates to an (amateur) artist creating a preset program in Photoshop or something to process/stylise/increase resolution on pictures/art quickly.

Like, right now I feel like if someone wanted to process/stylise/increase resolution on a photo with no copyright issues with an AI/LLM it's unethical, even though it saves the greatest resource of them all, time.
But if one were do it it manually (with Photoshop or something) it's completely fine, even if they perfectly copy someone else's "style" while doing it.

I just went to browse steam reviews. Maybe one in ten negative reviews were about EUG's use of AI art.
There were more negative reviews about the "discusting" DLC policy and the fact that new players are discriminated against in multiplayer.
Hell, there were more (older) negative reviews about WARNO's early access being poor than the AI art issue.

P.S. The more that I keep reading the reviews, the more I see a lot of negative reviews purely about the period of bad game stability this year than the AI issue.
