“The mountport ep was good improv but also it was railroaded pretty hard” -JerryMD

I agree, like how they set up the evil woman in the tree, but then Sam’s prompt put the villain in a skyscraper. It couldn’t naturally flow.

It’s kinda crazy that I like some of Zach and Jess’s improvised musicals as much as Hamilton and Tick Tick Boom

One chorus? What even is that?

(this discussion seems to have taken a different direction already but I just wanted to get my last two cents in about the original discussion subject)
In my opinion, I'd rather have consistently good musicals that are planned out (with most of the songs improvised), than occasional good musicals that are completely improvised (since I haven't really found an Off Book podcast that's near the quality of Mountport)
But you know, the formats can coexist, unprompted on the podcast and with prompts on Dropout

static helm
#

One message removed from a suspended account.

static helm
nimble mortar
#

But I think that's why it needs to refine the format, it doesn't have to be either completely structured or completely open. There's a sweet spot there I reckon

static helm
#

#

One message removed from a suspended account.

nimble mortar
#

But I digress. Honestly, I reckon that the reason I prefer the structured format is that it appeals to a wider audience. It's much less niche. It also seems more like the panel shows we have over here that I love

wild hamlet
#

But I love OffBook’s niche so much

magic basin
#

One aspect that I think plays a part of it is that improv can often be a hit or miss

nimble mortar
wild hamlet
#

Yeah, that’s kind of the definition of niche

#

Oh I just realized that sounded rude that wasn’t my intent

magic basin
# wild hamlet But I love OffBook’s niche so much

I guess that if it ever comes to Dropout, Sam and the crew will just have to decide what the viewer wants and what they want to get the right formula for the show, whether that be with or without prompts

wild hamlet
#

I do know that it needs to be a lot longer than a Game changer episode

nimble mortar
magic basin
magic basin
#

At least they won't have to cut off songs anymore

#

like with Business School

nimble mortar
#

Yeah totally

#

Tbf it WAS a Game Changer episode. They had to follow the format. In an ideal world, they'd expertly craft a new one

wild hamlet
#

I personally really like closing my eyes and imaging the full musical, so I think part of my opinion is that Sam was interrupted the flow. If there were prompts I’d want the host to feel more like an on stage narrator

magic basin
#

That's true. I'm not sure if the "phrases for a point" make it better or worse
On one hand you have that it is constrained more, on the other hand it might be less constrained because they have to come up with creative ways to incorporate the phrase

magic basin
nimble mortar
#

So in summary, it needs a lot of work?

#

Cuz I definitely agree with that

magic basin
#

Definitely. The Game Changer was an Off Book pilot that had to be constrained to the Game Changer format. However, if it's the exact same as the podcast, (so without prompts,) the probability that I will be watching is quite a bit lower

nimble mortar
#

Yeah. I tried watching Off Book live on youtube and I straight up didn't enjoy it

magic basin
#

Same, I want to see so much more of them because there's no doubt they're great at improv, but I just don't enjoy them with their current format :(

nimble mortar
#

I think the presenter (Doesn't necessarily have to be Sam) should act like more a dungeon master type role

#

One message removed from a suspended account.

nimble mortar
#

Someone with good improv skills I guess

#

Lean into the 'Yes and'

magic basin
#

I think it needs to be someone familiar in the world of musical improv so they can flow with the story

nimble mortar
#

Just like a dungeon master, they could have a general story in mind but not railroad it when the direction starts to change

magic basin
#

In Sam's episode notes that were posted on Insta he confirmed that he got help from Scott to make the prompts work, so it's clear that he's no expert (Sorry Sam)

nimble mortar
#

Makes sense actually

magic basin
#

Though the problem with that might be that you always get the story that the host makes, not the actors

nimble mortar
#

The trick would be keeping it general enough

#

One message removed from a suspended account.

nimble mortar
#

That's the entire reason I think it'd make a great Dropout show. You need the production value. The writers behind the scenes painstakingly crafting a story that will ensue laughter and follow and arc but also be vague and leave infinite amounts of room for creativity

#

an arc*

static helm
#

One message removed from a suspended account.

#

One message removed from a suspended account.

#

One message removed from a suspended account.

magic basin
#

you can't really both have prompts and infinite room for creativity

nimble mortar
#

Not infinite, you're right. But lots

magic basin
#

you really just need someone else who knows musical improv that has just a few prompts ready to start off the show and keep it going and interesting

nimble mortar
#

To reiterate the analogy, DnD doesn't work without a dungeon master

magic basin
#

the narrator has to be both a leader and a participant

nimble mortar
#

They HAVE to be good at improv

wild hamlet
#

As I’ve stated, I love the current offbook format, so I guess my goal in this conversation is not to pitch something I’d like, but something a lot of people would like that can introduce them to the magic

magic basin
#

That's also true

nimble mortar
#

Yeah, of course

magic basin
#

I said it in the beginning already, they just need to find something that both the audience and the crew would like

nimble mortar
#

If the podcast as it exists now is the perfect iteration then any changes will result in disappointment, or at the very least it won't feel the same as the show you love. But as you said, it should be a vehicle to introduce the show to a wider audience

#

Unfortunately, that means changing the show into something that appeals to that wider audience

#

I see the same thing when they adapt TV shows over here for america

#

I'm glad that Americans get to experience the show, but a lot of the time it loses what made the show great in the first place

magic basin
#

We're just four people so we can't really decide what "the general audience" likes, so we also can't really decide the changes

#

but yeah if the general audience likes the Game Changer more than the podcast, then the hypothetical dropout show will also be closer to the Game Changer format than the podcast

nimble mortar
#

True, but it's fun to speculate lol

wild hamlet
#

apple meh

nimble mortar
#

Ngl I love Apple but I'm still getting used to MacOS

wild hamlet
#

I’m an apple user but I wouldn’t get a Mac

nimble mortar
#

I'd recommend it

#

But there's a steep learning curve

wild hamlet
#

Why would you recommend it

#

I’ve used one at my school and it’s not great

#

I like having my phone connect to my watch but I don’t think they really need to connect to my computer

#

It would be convenient but Mac users can’t game

nimble mortar
#

I find Macs to be a lot more consistent and less glitchy than Windows machines. That's just natural for vertical integration. That combined with the new Apple Silicon processors, which are miles ahead of the competition and can run fanless with a stupidly long battery life (I charge my laptop like once a week). That just makes it my ideal laptop.

wild hamlet
#

But can I game

nimble mortar
#

The graphics capabilities of the new silicon are actually very VERY good

#

But where they'll get you is the compaitbility

#

The list of Mac-Compatible games is less than stellar

wild hamlet
#

Exactly I’m not interested in high graphics but I’m worried I can’t play my little indie games on a Mac

nimble mortar
#

I'm sure you'd be fine with most indie games

wild hamlet
#

To be fair I don’t even like Apple that much. I’ve considered switching phones but I love my watch and it’s useless without an iPhone

nimble mortar
#

Especially if they have a tablet/phone version. Because of the new RISC architecture, you can run pretty much any game in the ios app store too (People usually play games like Amoung Us n stuff)

#

That's fair actually

#

I literally sell phones for a living and can 100% confirm that it's a personal preference thing

wild hamlet
#

I get why your reasons sound appealing to some, but it’s not my thing. Like how OffBook isn’t your thing

nimble mortar
#

It really depends. If you're in the market to spend a grand on a laptop, I'm pretty confident in saying that you won't get a better one than a Macbook Air. And they tend to have really good longevity and resell value

#

But again, if you don't like MacOS, it doesn't matter

#

Because it's all about the experience

wild hamlet
#

I’m also just too poor

nimble mortar
#

That's another thing

#

The price

#

But yeah, I'd say Apple tend to absolutely kill it when it comes to watches and tablets. I love their phones but they can be hit or miss. And they've only recently started making laptops and desktops that are actually worth the money you pay for them

wild hamlet
#

My closing statement is this: Mac seems fine and all but it feels like a compromise between Apple ecosystem and good computer, not worth how much more money it is than my current laptop

nimble mortar
#

That's a good conclusion

wild hamlet
#

Okay now go to sleep

nimble mortar
#

I will say this (Slightly unrelated but I've worked in technology for a while and personally follow this piece of advice). Always buy the best you can afford, never scrimp on something you'll be using everyday

#

But yeah, I'll go sleep now lol
