Welcome @hushed ridge! Any feedback from the community will show up here.
Please note that this thread discussion may be shared with SMG, but its primary purpose is for the RISK community to discuss ideas and provide constructive feedback.

@hushed ridge you can mute the channels. Idt anything else can/will be done since a great portion of the active member ping plays tournaments
That would work, but I'm suggesting to instead keep #news_mini_announcements free from them (I've a large number of channels hidden, but there seems to be other places to post about them already). Or at least to be consistent with the tagging inside #news_mini_announcements, so to only tag relevant roles within.
SMG don't dictate policy on tournaments/pings, this would be one to raise with the Community <@&592397061937168427> team as they set the roles & announcements for events.
(I've added them here so they'll have seen it)
What other type of content would you like to get pings about in the mini-announcements channel @hushed ridge ?
#news_announcements is for official SMG-news, nothing from the Discord-community gets posted there.
#news_mini_announcements is used for anything else related to the Discord-community, all type of news, events or even tournaments.
#eventlabs_news is for important announcements from eventlabs tournaments.
#event_announcements is for announcements from the main official tournaments.
There is a thin line between what fits in the mini-announcements and the event-announcements channel, I can agree on that. But if it really is a big problem....
It's more the random roles tags (sometimes it's mini-announcements, active members, everyone, certain tournament roles or random combinations of some of them). And I kinda forgot (since I don't really pay attention to those tags), but I think it's also partly a Discord problem that I didn't mute all the channels I've always had hidden and all those roles also get tags in them.
Two of your roles:
Community Feedback & Status Updates are used exclusively by SMG
Mini Announcements will be used variably (usually only in the #news_mini_announcements channel though)
Active Member is the only one there that can't be removed by choice - as it's tied to "active in last X days" - is it that one specifically or the other ones?
I would suggest it make more sense to invert the reasoning about this. Why not just use a dedicated role for tags about tournaments?
But yes, active members gets tagged a lot for this. But like I said, I now realise I should go over all hidden channels to mute them, so I'll do that. But they also regularly get everyone tags for tournaments.
We need to use the everyone ping as not every Discord user is capable of selecting their appropiate roles to get the information they are interested in. Its a trade-off we are willing to have, and as long as we try to keep the pings within relevant channels, just muting the channels you are not interested in should work in your case.
In a perfect world people world actively seek out relevant roles and maintain their role list. In that same perfect world people would also not throw trash out of their car window, stand nicely in line when there is a queue and never be late with their annual tax report.
I will also remind all staff of trying to use #event_announcements more than #news_mini_announcements 🙂
I am slightly confused why you would expect to be in a Discord server and NEVER get pinged. Perhaps that’s an over simplification of what you are asking, but if you don’t want to be pinged, just mute the server
Oh for not getting a push notification (you'd still get the number increment for the ping I think? Just no notifications for it on your device(s)) - you could use this setting:
Edit: I haven't actually tried that one specifically, so it might hide it entirely (not sure)
Thanks, sounds good. Now that I've gone over the muted hidden channels, that should also solve most of it. I never took a moment to ponder about this before; also over time new channels are created, that are auto-hidden (guess that is also a bit of a Discord quirk, I'm not sure) and then get tagged, but that's of course only a very minor inconvenience.
These two server settings can also help:
(New channels I think use your default notifications, if you ONLY want notifications in #news_announcements you could set your server notifications to None & then add a channel override for #news_announcements specifically (or any combination of channels/categories)
I have discord notifications completely off on my devices anyway. So I only see them when I open Discord, I think those are linked to the increment still, but I'm also not really sure. Thanks.
I'm happy to see if people ping me (even if I have the channel hidden), but don't think Discord allows for a difference between roles and direct mentions on a per channel basis. But I took the time to set-up my roles to only get notified of stuff I find interesting, but now the majority of notifications are for stuff that don't interest me. So that's where I'm coming from.
Discord doesn't differentiate from role pings and @ pings. I had 3k+ lfg pings at one point. The only thing to hid them is to mute the channel and hide it. Idt that's what you want since you made this suggestion in the first place but it works for other stuff maybe
the problem (i think) is mostly the active member ping. This isn’t a voluntary role, so you’re pinging people regardless of whether or not they’ve chosen to be pinged for said announcement
nvm I didn’t finish reading
Well, either way, I agree with jack for the most part. Is it really important enough to @ everyone or @ active member to share the results of a 2v2 tournament??
to talk to people? To only get pings for things you have voluntarily chosen to be pinged about (the whole reason why voluntary ping roles exist)? Theres a difference between getting a ping because someone mentioned you/replied to a message and getting a ping for the risk meme competition
I think you guys could just be a bit more selective about what actually warrants mass pings. If you think announcing the sign ups for a tournament warrants that, I can understand it (I don’t agree, but wouldn’t necessarily hold it against you).
But for announcing the results of said tournament? That really makes no sense. Niche stuff like design & meme competitions? Nah bru.
Tbf we do only use the everyone ping for sign ups. It has never been used for results. So it’s generally less than 10 mass pings per year.
active member doesn’t constitute a mass ping? adjacent to mass ping is non voluntary ping anyway, which is moreso what I meant
Active member currently only has ~550 people, while there server has 120k, so I’d say no.
But yes, it is non voluntary since the role is based on server activity. I think the idea was that people with the role were likely to want to hear about tournament results and some of the other things we used it for but that appears to not be the case which is fine, we can simply stop doing it
