Name: Bamboozled by Bermuda (Caribbean Advanced)
Original map: Caribbean Location Map from Wikipedia
Description: From the Great Blue Hole to Tortuga, the land of rum awaits! But who will prevail and become the Pirate King? Be aware, the smallest islands can be your biggest help or equally be the cause of your demise!
Territories: 93
Continents: 14
With seemingly (and one really) split bonuses excitement is never away! You might go for an easy bonus, but realise they tend to be in the way, while bigger ones in the corners are easier to defend IF you can get them before your opponents realise your plan! The big islands also are key territories, both able to control paths (70%), perfect for making unexpected attacks (portals) and block part of the map (caps). Choose your adventure!
I spent a lot of time researching little cays and islets, but had less time to think about game design so Iโm happy to receive any suggestions of that nature ๐
Continents:
NA (North America+Belize): brown +3
America Centrale: white +4
SAP (San Andres y Providencia): black +4
Disputed Banks: light blue +3
Sudamericana: pink +5
Leeward Antilles: purple +3
Federal Dependecies: yellow +5
Winward Islands: light green +4
Leeward Islands: orange +6
501/2th state: dark blue +2
Greater Antilles โ South: dark green +4
Hispaniola: gold +4
Cuba: red +4
Lucayan Archipelago: teal +5
Also, I have ideas for like 20 more territories but am afraid to make them too frgmented so it's hard to click on ๐
I want to spare anyone 90+ territory names but happy to share it if someone is interested

the small islands could be enlarged to make them more clickable. 93 territories is enough for a risk map until we get a >6 player gamemode imo
Oh, the map is to scale, so most islands are basically invisible. That's why I made sea territories, those are much more moveable in that sense. I imagined the number circles to look like this and then u can click the rectacles* around them.
And potential additional territories are marked here:
These circles are made to be bigger than the average UI just to make sure. Now there are 2 things I'm worried about: Turneffe Atoll (brown) & the Grenadines (light green)
Also, forgot to mention, potential 3D graphics can include the Great Blue Hole (Lighthouse Reef), some pirate symbols at Tortuga, drinks at Curacao and Isla de Margarita, maybe the relevant part of the Bermuda Triangle (as Bermuda couldn't fit), some volcanoes at Montserrat or the "boobs" of St Lucia, Key West or the Panama Canal.. just throwing some ideas out there, I'm no graphic designer ๐
it stands out in the way that there are bonuses inside of bonus (purpkle inside of yellow) so thats cool
im pretty sure there are at least a few maps with that
in risk ofc
This is awesome. 96 territories is fine and playable, we have 5 maps in the 90+ range. Peronally I enjoy those more.
@quick kettle is right though, some of those territories are too small for our UI (even if geographically correct). 2/3 of the player base is mobile, plus we'll be adding some additional features to the game shortly that will require us to be more vigilant on the minimum viable territory size.
But lovely work. And that non-playable area to the south allow for the bottom UI to fit nicely - great thinking mate.
what kind of features ๐ค
I thought that we would eventually get larger zoom, which would make it easier to make larger maps in the future?
We did a manual pass on all maps to improve the zooming limits in the last update (primarily to help mobile players). We will be reworking the camera funcitonality to improve camera bounds, but that will most likely be Q1 next year.
If I had my way I'd make MASSIVE maps that go off screen and add a mini-map HUD to the bottom right to highlight activity off-screen. But no immediate plans for that.
What kind of features....we'll announce shortly. Something we've been working on in parallel to the sandbox / network overhaul / general quality of life features for 9+ months.

Great minds think alike, I think it'd be awesome with a whole world map in the advanced EU styles, so like 200-250 territories
Same same. I feel ya.
I saw you upvoted my map aswell, did you have any similar feedback? Feels like itd be good with dev feedback if i was to make a new map
yeah it had awesome detail. 2 things (and this can be tricky when trying to be geographically accurate)
-
minimum size territories. Gotta allow for sausage fingers on mobile. We're also adding some new features soon, and having a consistent minimum size has become more important.
-
If possible think landscape orientation. 2/3 playerbase is mobile and working to maximise screen real estate
-
less of an issue for you map but general map design: consider where the UI sits. I see a lot of maps where territories hug the edge (I really enjoy that like inverse world) but you have to be more generous in the size of those territroies to account for the UI covering part of them.
-
another general tip: avoid adjacent territories that make a perfect cross (see attached). Hard to read whether those diagonally opposite territories connect.
We have a more detailed internal guide on map design doc. I'll see if we can share more of that.
Forgot to post the image on the "cross" example of territory arrangement. Always avoid this. There are examples peppered in our own maps, but we're removing those. Some of the older maps are more of a pain to edit as the pipeline tools have changed over the years.
Thank you for all of the advice, much appreciated
Aww, if I'd rework the whole thing, it'd be more like 70ish territories I think. I also counted on negative zoom being a thing recently, that's why I wanted to go towards the higher count. Also, I think large maps are becoming just small pockets on the edges (Airship), that's what I wanted to break with large terroitories like Cuba and Hispaniola. I'll post a second version, just to try, but I doubt I'll win anything by the votes so far ๐
I also love how u discussed another map here ๐คฃ
@zinc grotto wanna help for v2? ๐
help with what
version 2
@rancid tendon the new Terraformed Venus has also very small territories
But just in case, I made a version 2
looks fun, the right hand side is this corridor type looking zone where it thickens or becomes thin again.
left hand side is a bit too chaotic for me, also it seems to me like a challenge of how to visually represent this concept: I'm curious how you could design it for risk while land and water territories can be distinguished to keep the carribean atmosphere, else it would be hard to keep that spirit.
I respect the effort, definitely one of the more interesting an unique constellations I've seen in this competition
Thanks man, I basically thought about it in a way that the map is just the background and islands are even water territories just bigger. The most challenging thing here is to keep some territories apart, or the left side those diamond holes are my tool for this. I had to make them smaller, so that territories are bigger and more clickable. Maybe circles would have been a better shape.
