What is your definition of skill based matchmaking? What is someone else's definition of skill based matchmaking?
There are so many different ways of playing risk. So we get into the debates of which way is the most skill based. How do we score "skill"? Bounties (kills)? Wins? Or both combined?
I do believe Novices should be playing Novices. Grandmasters should be encouraged to play other Grandmasters and Masters. What do we do in between? Where do we draw the lines?
What are your issues with the current system?
I think he means getting into lobbies with similarly ranked players? So like beginners only face beginners and novices, intermediates face experts and masters face grandmasters.
My issue with the current system is that novices could get beaten by grandmaster while not even knowing how the game works. But there are also other scenarios where bad players can lead to a worse experience of the game (e.g. if you play prog Wo Dom and someone thinks he can kill you but fails, he has ruined your and his game in the process)
I don't think adding a system where you can only join lobbies that are you rank (or in a certain point range) would get completely rid of this problem, but it would grandly reduce its appearance.
The main problem with a similar rank based system is with Masters and GMs. Not only would it be very hard to fill a lobby because there’s just not that many of them, the lobbies would not be very fun. Most lobbies need lower ranked players who aren’t afraid to lose because they are aggressive and move the game along. When you get a lobby with 6 GMs in it, the game stalemates almost every time playing standard ranked settings. So you basically have to play 70% or Prog WD on very specific maps ( these make up most late round tournament settings). And these settings tend to be very luck based (mainly turn order and card luck). So there would just be a wall you hit where nobody can move up in ELO because you can’t win often enough. Nobody wants to sit there for 30 minutes waiting for a lobby to fill up just to lose because they had no set on 4.
