#Strategies for MinimizingResolving No-Shows

Missing opponents are a top area of feedback for all Risk tourneys. Are there any ideas for how we could make it easier for players to remember their game time? Or more efficiently resolve cases where they forget?

We’re currently designing a new Classic Tourney here from scratch, so would be great to build these into the foundation of how it works.

On the tech side @sharp elbow has been doing great work developing @onyx isle bot, which gives pings at the right times, converts to local timezones, reminds map + settings, automatically updates time in message etc.

And on the human side, waitlist and staff fill-ins have been pivotal in filling vacant spaces last minute.

Your idea for a specific volunteer crew of fill-in players on top of staff/event-helpers looks worth investigating too

Thanks… I was aware that staff fill in (that’s where I got the idea) but they are taxed enough I’m sure…and can’t really be expected to fill in except in the emergency situation where there are less human players than the minimum required. This volunteer pool would allow the tournament organizers (yourselves) to decide that there would be no bots at all if you wanted.

Some of the most common, but not applicable solutions would be:

  • An entry fee (we can't do that)
  • Account/tournament bans for no shows (would be useless, because it's too easy to create new accounts/identities)

My idea would be to simply hard limit the player pool to like 1k people. Anyone that registers after that gets a spot on a waiting list. If there is a no show for any time slot every player on the waiting list that has marked that time slot gets pinged. If they are able to join the lobby they "won" that spot. It would encourage some sort of viewership and the amount of bots round 1 should be reduced that way.

If you care about a tournament spot, You need to make the match time. No? ( it's so easy to get out of any game in risk e.g putting your phone down/phones calls/ social media etc) So I would make it harder on the competitors if they miss a match. A deserter tag or maybe (not exactly sure) how the points will be calculated for this tournament) But if you start everyone with 1000points A missed match/ no show - 350points or a figure that will make it harder but possible to make it to round 2?

This goes with the ranking thread but what interests me about the tournament style is how there is only 2 maps with settings disclosed so far... Because that is how everyone gets there ranking...? Playing the same map on the same settings to achieve a GM ranking. Or people just doing that because that's what they know to do. Play world domination on fixed cards. But it's all about the test of playing whatever card setting or game type and still winning? That's why we have this tournament 🤔🧐

Perhaps there can be a qualifying round in which anyone who has never participated in a tournament before must show up and play to be moved to the real points based rounds. It would give any new players a chance to understand the rules, times, spreadsheets etc while allowing previous participants to skip right to the real deal.

put up some money as a gurantee, a lot of work and some risk. Or at least for the first round just an open challenge for who is in whose game. Games start when lobby is full.

I love the no show role

While SMG wouldn’t let us collect money from participants, the idea of a cost to getting a place in round 1 could make players value their game there more and be more likely to show up.

E.g. if the cost was in time rather than money, say by having a 1-week qualifying phase before round 1, where each player shows up and plays a game to qualify, players who qualified by playing may be more likely to show up for round 1

yeah i like the idea ofa practice game that doesn't REALLY count as just a way to ensure people will take this seriously!

Mby some instruktions would help.
Although i dont know How many have this problem

Just pointing out that I have seen some struggle.

I agree, I see it too, and try to help new users find their way if I can, but without struggle there is no learning or real fun for that matter. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to wade in the kiddy pool, I want to jump in the ocean and see what happens.
