CRTs provide an unique image that you cant get on modern display

#

simply by the way they work

valid rivet
#

I never looked into it

river ice
#

did you think people when they were watching TV that was on 480i or playing Atari games felt like it looked bad?

#

no

#

it looked incredible

#

because they were media created for those displays

valid rivet
#

iirc my grandma had a CRT

#

because whenever you touched the screen

#

you would hear an electrical buzzing sound

valid rivet
#

to prove how dangerous AC is?

river ice
#

ye

valid rivet
#

I do wonder tho if it's actually worth it to restore my ps 1 and ps 2 in the age of emulators

tidal lotus
#

Please don’t try this till you don’t have any prior experience
Just an advice

tidal lotus
#

CRTs worked by firing a beam of electrons at the back of the television screen. Occasionally, this would have the side-effect of charging the glass
It is the static you are feeling

#

What exactly are you asking about?

valid rivet
#

Since I have seen it a lot on various devices

#

is it just an alternative to AV?

tidal lotus
#

Or you are asking about optical audio

valid rivet
#

oh that's an audio signal

#

I see

tidal lotus
#

fiber optic cable is used to send an audio signal between two devices
In theory it can transmit both analog and digital data
digital is much easier to work around
So in practice it’s used for digital signals

#

was the best format for sending high-quality digital audio back then
But now it’s replaced by HDMI

valid rivet
#

always forget that HDMI handles both

@broken rapids how're you liking the phone?

broken rapids
#

I love it so much, it was definitely a major change from my huawei, it has a super unique design and I loved tweaking with the settings

#

The camera zoom sucks tbh but I never really zoom in anyways

open saffron
#

aw damn

broken rapids
#

I didn't have gesture navigation before and it makes my life so much easier and fluent

open saffron
#

I love gestures

Zenfone 10 comes out this year

#

Depending on how it is I might sell this again and buy the new one shkdjd8

#

I couldn't wait

open saffron
broken rapids
#

You mean this?

open saffron
#

I mean yeah

#

just settings/ui options that aren't on stock android

tidal lotus
#

Why would consumers need this?

#

Or even gen6

#

Biostar already released a gen6 variant motherboard lol

#

Looks like a cash grab
Gen 4 is enough

#

Wouldn’t pam4 cause higher bit error rate

#

It’s signaling is more sensitive to noise

#

Very interested how they would handle encoding and decoding and it’s effect on cpu
More beefy cpus on their way?

#

Also what do you all think about Apple vision pro?

#

Closing down the iPhone lineup after 15 is a very risky move, would hurt them severely

#

Do you plan on buying one, do you think that AR is the future
(I think it’s still too early for something like this)

#

But again lots of fucking morons will get one, even if they need to get a loan

#

Apple can certainly push it as the new standard given their influence

#

Also there’s already a problem (Smartphones are getting too many cameras and are too large)
This makes me remember apple’s iphone 5 launch event
(How they promoted small size phones)

#

And how absurdly large did new iphones have become now (Perfect sized phones are a niche nowadays)

vale flint
#

how are we on to gen 7 already despair Can you even buy pcie 6 drives yet?

tidal lotus
#

800gig ethernet baby

#

I think it’s probably for enterprise
But yeah even pci gen 5 drives makes no difference on consumer platforms

#

Direct storage will take time to implement

tidal lotus
#

But wouldn’t be too surprised if it didn’t happen, technology is arriving it’s stagnation point by current standards

#

Also gen5 ssds requires so much cooling
Gen6 ssd would probably need an aio for it

valid rivet
#

Thinking about looking for a CRT lately

#

But I would have no idea where to put it/not sure my table would hold it

tidal lotus
#

Crt’s are really heavy
You would need a firm table

should I use fedora for coding? I am learning C next semester and we HAVE to use Linux but I'm not sure which distri

tidal lotus
#

You can use any distro for development

#

generally it doesn't matter, but it does help to have the exact same versions of everything for testing

broken rapids
#

i want to play around with virtual machines thats wh

tidal lotus
#

Go ahead

#

It’s so convenient to use a vm

open saffron
#

yeah whatever distro suits your needs should sork

#

as long as whatever IDE you want to use runs on it then should be fine

broken rapids
#

i want to use vim 💀

open saffron
#

oh that'll work on any then lmao

#

have fun, I've always avoided learning the keybindings lmao

#

seems to be a good workflow for a lot of people tho

#

also I ended up flashing a custom rom

#

I'm finding magisk more appealing than the rom itself tho

tidal lotus
#

45k watts

#

Attaching a turbine to pc lol
So much chaos 😂

open saffron
#

I think custom roms are good for extending the life of certain devices but I was looking for customization options and they're not the best for that anymore

#

magisk is tho, I'm gonna use that with my phone's stock rom

open saffron
#

@broken rapids have you started using vim yet?

#

I'm thinking of giving it a try with neovim

#

thought this dashboard thing was cool

#

I like how this person uses it

broken rapids
#

omg that DOES look epico

#

i didnt have the chance yet but i will try to spend my summer getting accustomed to it

#

idk if the word is used correctly here

open saffron
#

yeah that fits

#

I was between vim and emacs but I think I'll go with vim cuz emacs seems to require a lot of setup

#

I think I would spend more time customizing it than actually using it

broken rapids
#

god i know that feeling lsjdf

open saffron
#

yeahhh

#

that's how I am anyways but I think it would be worse

#

emacs is an operating system basically

#

like

#

you can have an email client, web browser, etc

broken rapids
#

i never heard of it personally but what you are saying makes me more interested in emacs than vim

open saffron
#

I mean it depends on what you're looking for

#

vim is more straightforward I think

#

but both are pretty extensible

#

if you want some more info

broken rapids
#

hmm

midnight nymphBOT
broken rapids
#

i can use vim keybinds in almost any IDE

open saffron
#

tru

#

they're pretty universal

#

you could also program emacs to use vim keybinds but

#

kinda counterintuitive

open saffron
#

I am learning the vim keybindings finally

#

it's a processs

open saffron
#

have any of you used NixOS? thinking of switching over to it from Arch

tidal lotus
#

Never heard of it

#

Does it have any special features?

open saffron
#

yeah it uses smth called declarative configuration which I don't understand completely but basically all the system configuration exists in one configuration file. so it's much easier to setup your configuration on a new device or when reinstalling. also if you install smth or make a change that breaks things, it's really easy to rollback to the previous state. same with new system versions and stuff. you can also test packages without installing them? it handles dependencies and stuff differently too. idk it sounds more streamlined and more open to experimentation to me

#

there's the full operating system and also just a package manager that can be used on any distro

#

this article laid it out better I think

open saffron
#

this too

open saffron
#

yeah!!

#

I'm thinking of trying it out along with wayland

#

just looking into it more

#

idk if it's got the support/community that arch has tho

open saffron
#
