I have a spike wall all the way around except where the barn and cow shed sit.

At OP would recommend you move all your storages together they are very spread out and thus harder to defend when the bandits split up. Use the project buildings as impenetrable walls. Some people put them on the outer permiter. I feel like the work best if you use them to limit the number of directions you need to watch.
