Is it just me or does everything seem harder, rewards less and obstacles more difficult to navigate than previously?
Thinking of giving up - maybe an alliance is the answer

Youre probably right - good expeditions and then bad ones. Does joining an allaince make the game more fun?

It do gives you an opportunity to raid and get gold , but that comes at the cost of more grinding to meet alliance contribution requirements

You don't seem to handle the game well ... join an alliance once you become stable
