Shallow lake (strong leather)
I personaly kill buffalos there with useless t5 melee from daily quests -
marshes any farming locations (perfect hide)
As templar said, shallow lake is good for strong leather, you should kill buffalo's and it drops around 6-8 leather, and for perfect hide, if you haven't unlock deepwater, you could farm it in shallow by killing bear, mature wolf and jaguar, or you could buy it in southern trader

Def stat is even better than i thought
when you receive damage, damage is first sent through rings and stat points
But then when it is sent to your armor, the damage that wasnt subtracted is RECALCULATED using the armor defense stat
I will show my findings
No armor this man does 20 damage
Using an +8 defense ring it now takes %5 percent off
1373 defense gunfighter set takes away 75%
+8 defense rings plus 1373 defense gunfighter set now takes away more than the two stats alone combined

My understanding was that defense actually reduces the damage your armor takes, making it last longer
Right, basic stat and rings will receive the dmg first rest will be distributed to armors
@crystal bay do you have the defense chart of how it works? I tested that the trinket plus defense points increases dmg reduction steadly till 100 points, after that the points have far less effect in dmg reduction and then go to the armor
Basically, despite being 1/171 the value of the 1373 armor stat, it is able to do 13% of its job

And that extra 13% of damage reduction is completely nullified and does not go to your armor
And thats only with a +8 ring, its get even better
This is with 31 points of ring defense
It takes away 5 damage
This is with 1373 points of armor defense
It takes away 17 points
Its only 2.2% of the armor defense stat, yet its able to absorb 29% of the same damage
And this damage is completely nullified, meaning it does not go to your armors durability
And because both of these numbers work based off of percentages, the benefits are multiplied when you use both of them together

It may not seem like a lot at first, but in canyon trials when you are getting swarmed with 50 animals that 6% is determining whether your armor breaks or not

Sorry to break the discussion on defense, but I just noticed that while doing the Northern Blood daily task, the buildings at the Hideout spot are "dynamite-able". Has anyone blown into them? Is there anything in them?
All the temporary bandit hideouts from the daily bounty quests have buildings to use dynamite on, and the number of dynamite needed generally increases with the quest difficulty, easy/med/hard.
Just remember to dynamite doors or windows, never walls
Make sure you dynamite doors and windows…saved your dynamite!
You explained it well. The basics are simple as you’ve described- damage is first reduced by your def stat, jewelry, and pack defense scores as absolute damage reduction. Then the remaining damage is reduced by armor worn (with the damage reducing its durability), and any damage after that is passed on to your health pool.
As your math above shows, 1 point of def stat/jewelry/pack has a much greater effect than 1 point of armor defense.
But also noted above, it does taper off (parabolically) so at very high levels you need more and more def points for a smaller gain in damage reduction.
At high def levels there isn’t a meta however - for example 100 def stat + 18 atk spd stat versus 118 def stat, assuming same jewelry. Its really personal preference and how much armor you want to save.
High atk spd can be an indirect way to save armor, because they die before they hit you. But each player finds a tipping point where, based on a ton of factors like gear BP levels, movement and cover tactics, stealth, taming and pets, etc, they start taking more health and durability damage than they are comfortable with, and that’s a good time to experiment with defense builds, either stat, jewelry, or both. You as a player decide how to balance lethality and tanking.
IMO - the only part of the game at this moment where one needs very high defense is CT waves 37+. All other parts of the game can be played using any build (spirit, spd, stealth, def) with the associated costs and consequences of that build.
