Most important advice is to not crash... it can be pretty easy when you're still learning the tracks and how they react with lots of nitro.

Apart from top speed, handling is also important for slipstream. Taking corners well and not losing speed.

Rank is an arbitrary number, that is the problem, they need to make clear and specific how things work and what they mean in this game. Rank, acceleration, handling, formulas for gaining or losing points in MP... Everything is just a dumbed down number and stuff 'just happens'.
