I think we are just approaching it from different angles and perspectives on game design.

I think players need an obvious go to in order to improve their odds (more unit ranks) as motivation, you (seem to) think the motivation should come from ranking it all the way in the first place.

I would be on board for using r5 for AS instead of r4, largely just because it is a later game boss and more ranking options are available/the game has been played longer at that point.

Technically R5 units is possible. A few people who used R5 ranked units to kill the AS.
The main issue is that this still took BC-1 Snakes and Veterans to pull off. The main issue for F2P right now is the lack of units that can pull off an AS kill. The whole F2P no snake setup with R6 Trebs and a R6 RT doesn’t work well enough.

Seeing that things have apparently gotten rather heated again. I’m just going to reiterate the thought that this is meant to be a game where an average player should be able to both have fun and do well without spending huge amounts of money or making this game their entire life. As a lot of us here are coming from more competitive or at least more engaged communities, I feel like this is something getting lost very quickly. I’m not saying that boss strike should be easy or that T10 shouldn’t require any effort. I’m just saying that it shouldn’t be impossible for a player to reach that goal if they play the game normally.

The discussion surrounding the level 56 threshold is particularly notable at the moment as it allows access to unlimited gears for the production of heavier tanks, which still remain the primary viable F2P tank all the way to endgame, alongside trebuchets to give a much more accessible chance at killing the Sentinel without boss drops or premium units. It also grants access to ETs for lighter spenders. So it just feels disheartening for the game’s natural progression to be punished so heavily when it comes time for a boss strike.

To be extra clear about my stance on this, I’m really not worried about my own score. I’m a whale myself and I’m going to try and place top 100 again regardless of the difficulty, but I’ll accept wherever I place. I made the choice to push for level 56 in full knowledge of the difficulty spike. What I’m worried about is how this will be taken by more casual players who are likely to just leave the game altogether. We already saw plenty of people being disappointed after the first Boss Strike, which with firemod was as easy as a strike will ever be. And I really don’t want to see this game die again due to a diminishing player base.

Madrona has implemented so many great QoL changes already, from repeating battles, to lowering the level of the chem reservoir, to the brand new favorites bar. I don’t see why that trend can’t continue here and make the game more accessible so it can properly thrive.

Perhaps the initial wording of the top level post has skewed the discussion a bit too much towards 55 vs 56 for this next strike. It is more productive in general to focus on the larger picture of no game should punish level increases. I have brought up this issue before joining MM back when the level cap was 49 and long before I even hit the level cap. Letting 56 fight 55 waves is a good temporary bandage, but in general, anyone should be allowed to fight lower level enemies provided that the deployment of higher level units are restricted. It is impossible for the devs to perfectly balance encounters and point gain across levels, but design like this, one that provides players with options, alleviates that burden from the dev's shoulders

While I do agree that the level bracket design needs some work and that I shouldnt be "punished" for leveling up (im personally staying at 55) I dont think that the devs should change the bracket for this strike

I think the bracket is more of an issue because:

1. BS is a poorly designed mode
2. Most units in the game are 💩, making leveling up to obtain new units pointless when they cant keep up with the increase in difficulty

When theres no unit at the 56 tier that makes leveling up necessary (maulers are 53 and the best clear tool for strike) theres not really any point to it

and the issue isnt so grand that they need to bring 56 down to 55

Ive changed my mind from what I said initially, since I dont think there is any lasting negative impact on the game that will come from this
