Could be that shadow turned the VM mid update off due to the afk timer and left windows corrupted, you might have to reset the machine

Indeed, if leaving the app closed for 30 mins (time to allow the VM to auto shutdown and try sort itself out) doesn't solve it. Reset unfortunately might be the only solution. Out of curiosity was it a generic windows update or an "Early" one?

It's usually a good idea to click around a few times during an update every few minutes

Really shouldn't need to.. Default auto shutdown is 2 hours, then 1 hour during peak. Unless there's datacentre overload. But who knows 😄
