#Shadow PC not reacting to mouse input (?)

Hello there,

as the title says - I am encountering a pretty weird problem, and it has only ever started since about 3-4 days ago or so. Before that, everything was fine and unchanged since then. Now, all of a sudden, the Shadow PC application doesn't see my mouse anymore. As in: the cursor completely disappears; it's not visible at all, and no inputs are ever made, regardless of where I try to click. It's like the Shadow window just doesn't get any input at all.

What could cause this? I am at my wit's end looking for fixes.

Also, I've only noticed this recently as well: sometimes I nowadays get total file corruption, but only seemingly on certain applications. For example: I have Cyberpunk 2077 installed on the Shadow's C: drive... and probably 8 out of 10 times whenever I start the Shadow, that app is corrupted and not startable. If I try, it takes forever to do anything and then just quits in an error.

Weirdly enough, sometimes when I shut it down and restart, it works again. Huh?

I was very satisfied with the service up until start of May or so 😦 what is happening?

have you installed or used a drawing tablet using USB over IP ? instlled some drivers that could tamper with HID's (gamepad/keyboard/mouse) ?

#

installed cursor/windows themes ? or any kind of customisation ?

#

have you tried to factory reset your shadow to see if that fixes it ?

I am using the most basic version of Windows 10 you could imagine (no fancy themes installed, no nothing; just your everyday working apps and a few games that don't require the power of Shadow). My mouse is a Roccat Kone Aimo, I have their driver software called "Swarm" installed (is that maybe known for causing issues?)

Factory resetting the Shadow could be a possible solution, yeah (just as "have you tried turning it off and on again" generally is); but how do I back up all the data? I specifically am using the Shadow because I currently don't own a powerful enough PC myself. I have no way to store anything locally, more or less. If I do a factory reset, all that I have set up over the last 6-7 months is gone... and then I'd basically be back where I started, making the reason why I subscribed to Shadow in the first place moot.

#

It's also a bit weird, because right now (after a couple of simple reboots) it seems to be working as intended. Not sure what's causing those hiccups that prevent input, or are corrupting files randomly, when after a while it "magically" fixes itself. I'll keep an eye on it.

no problem we all have a good reason for using shadow, but that doesn't mean our datas will be safer on shadow, you need a backup & sync strategy at all time if you value your data (could be shadow drive, or any backup solution, some also use extra storage as first line of defense too to backup their C: (also D: drive (extra storage) is left untouched during a factory reset).

Oh? Is it now? That is good to know. I was under the assumption that a factory reset would basically delete the entire thing.

the other reason why factory reset is often proposed here or by support, is because you are Admin on the windows installation, that means you can do or break anything and we mostly don't do windows specific support in here and nobody should ask you for your credential or a way to remote desktop into your shadow to try to fix things

#

and also because it healthy for your windows installation too, some will brag to have the same windows for 10 years but yet there's no world record to break :)

Fair enough, I understand. But in any case, if this wasn't a "Windows specific" problem, it can't really hurt to at least bring it to someone's attention. Should it then turn out to be a silly misunderstanding, at least it's out there for people to know, should they have similar issues. 🙂

of course, I'm only giving you the options :)

molten dragon

Yeh 😄 as I said, for some reason it sometimes "magically" works itself out, even. Not sure what that's about. Could it also be a bad connection with lots of packet loss?

wind quail
#

it could be, shadow is very sensible to latency and connection quality, not much regarding bandwidth

#

(or if you have uninstalled Swarm, that could have helped too)

molten dragon

I figured as much. I've had stable (and acceptable quality) streams with as low as 12-15 Mbit/s (although I usually set it to about 30; which is still way below the capabilities of my actual internet speed, but I like to account for outages or other drawbacks). And in those cases, there was no real difference, as long as the latency was good.

perfect, it's exactly how it should be done :p

But the info that the D: drive remains untouched (if true) is definitely good to know 🙂 will keep that in mind, it would make things much easier if I ever need that kind of troubleshooting.

shadow talks about main drive to be safe, as users may have done multiple paritition and have C:, D:, E: on it and yes I can confirm that extra storage is not wiped during a factory reset (that doesn't mean you shouldn't backup your data at anytime :p)

molten dragon
#

Wait... you can do partitions on a Shadow? (Ok maybe a stupid question, but I kinda assumed this was pretty much the only "hard limit" of sorts; having the two drives with the space you subscribed to)

wind quail
#

main drive (256 or 512GB "SSD") and extra storage (sold as slice of 256GB up to 5TB) are 2 different drives, that means in this boundaries you can resize as you like both of them and create partitions (I don't recommend on main drive as partitions won't prevent factory reset to fully wipe it)

#

also you can't extend main drive.

Figures. 😅 Anyways... so far, and right now - the Shadow is working just fine. I almost feel stupid for opening this thread. 😑 But the things I described really happened (I am especially confused about the occasional "file corruption" or... files just refusing to load). That's also OK right now. It wasn't 2 days ago.

I'll look at this as "semi-solved" but will report back, should I notice anything getting worse. Thanks for all the kind replies in the meantime anyways. 🙂

don't hesitate to report your issues to shadow support by opening a support, if you are multiple users having pesky issues it's something that could be investigated by giving more visibility to it :)

Alright, after a few more days of continuing along... I will just chalk this up to "bad connection" because so far, it has not acted up again. I still find the symptoms weird 😅 as in: why would it refuse to register clicks on the window when I just have a high ping or something? Or why would files be "semi-corrupted" and then get "un-corrupted" once I reboot the thing? 😅 Nevertheless... so far, no further issues 🙂 I am once again satisfied with the Shadow service. Hopefully it'll stay that way.
