#Connecting slimeVR to Shadow
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
You can tunnel a subnet into Shadow using Tailscale. I need to work on a tutorial but I’ve just felt like a sack of garbage the past couple months.
Aw I'm sorry, and I can relate!
Is tailscale like hamachi? I've tried the latter before and it didn't seem to work but maybe I was missing something.. though my PC and the shadow PC were def connected
You have to punch your subnet through. Otherwise the Slime trackers won't ever be detected in Shadow.
Can also do it with a Raspberry Pi, a USB WLAN adapter, and the same subnet routing via Tailscale.
Ok gotcha. Eagerly awaiting a tutorial then hehe... I am just not sure how
And thank you
Is it possible to get notified somehow when there's a tutorial out for this?
It’s more or less when I have time to spend. I have ESPs but no IMUs which is probably enough for a connection test.
First of all, this was a pain in the butt for me to set up, so consider subscribing to my patreon! I make/edit VRChat avatars, as well as draw things!
I tried to make this tutorial as simple as possible, and i'm sorry it's so long, my local pc is pretty slow and doesn't like OBS. Hope this helps though!

Is this it? I'm gonna try it when I have more time
I'm pretty sure it can be done more easily using a tailscale subnet router
latency wise it's a lot better and it's a more elegant solution :)
Oh k! I have hamachi but I could try tailscale. Just not familiar with any of those! Do I still need the usb to Ethernet adapter, is that part still the same?
I've watch quickly this video but the idea is to USB forward a USB wifi adapter on shadow
you can use either hamachi or tailscale (tailscale is very easy) and virtualhere as shadow USB forward cannot do WIFI/BT forward
then the idea is to setup a wifi access point on your shadow and connect your trackers to it
Cool yeah I think I understand, you just recommend a different VPN than they use in the vid and that's the only difference?
Different method. Forwarding a subnet gives you access to everything on that subnet via Tailscale.
A split tunnel VPN would require you to do what that video says and USB forward a NIC of some kind to accomplish the same goal. Not as reliable.
I just wanna make sure... I don't need the USB to Ethernet adapter?
That could be another way to do it
Forward usb ethernet adapter using VH and connect to your local wifi trackers
There's many options :)
You don't need it with a subnet router. I'll grab a couple of ESPs from work tomorrow and see if I can start working on a tutorial.
Thank you!
So I connected my computer to shadow with tailscale and the only way I figured so far was to then put in shadow's IP into the slimevr server settings for VRchat OSC which did work but only as well as the OSC works...
Is there another way?
Some slime settings won't work with OSC because it requires the headset / steam connection
There’s a tutorial article on the tailscale site that I can’t link to directly here but it’s about subnet routers.
So I set up my PC as a subnet router and it looks to be connected correctly as such with shadow but I'm still not seeing slimes show up in slime server on shadow… not sure if there's also something more like on slime settings or whatever I'd need to edit? Or are they still supposed to connect to my own PC slime server instead of on shadow but somehow the data is transferred to shadow PC's steamvr..?
I wish to have help with this as well... Has there been anything that made progress with this?
Just waiting on tutorial
If you or anyone reading this also wants this solved then make sure to up-vote this thread, not sure what else to do
solve what ? someone with SlimeVR should make a tutorial or ask SlimeVR for one or provide an easy way to do it from its own software stack
Well, G said above that they might make a tutorial but yeah anyone could do so. Believe me, I have already posted on slimevr server about it as well... Just that no one there has yet explained how to use tailscale without the USB to Ethernet adapter method (which is the only method they have in the slime docs)
there's many way to achieve goal, it's pure networking stuff, you could :
- set a VPN server on your router
- add a linux firewall/vpn server and router as bridge
- buy/make a shadow ghost (v2) and enable LAN over IP
.....
Alrighty I guess I'll show your list to someone who knows how to do any of those things and who can possibly help break it down for me into steps 😅
How would I do the router as bridge thing? I have a router with dd-wrt, I just don't really know what to do from here.
VPN server on it and you connect on it from shadow (make sure to disable default gateway and autostart on windows startup until stable)
(What is default gw and auto start)
I’ll try this, it didn’t work with Tailscale but I’ll try either softether, openvpn, or wireguard. I already have a wireguard server which makes this easy
Perfect
Thanks
VPN IP has just to be on same subnet as your trackers or you need to add required routes manually/automatically routed on VPN server internal IP on shadow
My wireguard instance is on the same network yes
