Looking for detailed instructions on where to start, wiring, bench flashing there are lots of articles i know but which is the easiest for someone not a computer nerd.

dire quartz
#

Esoterical's guides are the current "gold standard". Most problems people run into are due to missing steps or errors in transcription.

https://canbus.esoterical.online/
https://usb.esoterical.online/

dusky rose
#

Ya i looked at that but it didn't excatly show me the wiring connections that i could find, showed the flashing process but i need to see wiring detail and i have currently setup on rj45 and i need to know do i remove the adapter board and wiring that has first?

dire quartz
#

Which main MCU are you using?

versed nimbus
dusky rose
#

BTT SKR 1.4'S

versed nimbus
#

@dusky rose wasn't this the machine that you got from someone who did some work for spacex

dusky rose
#

Lol yes sir, trying to update it some

versed nimbus
#

Nice

#

Ok

dusky rose
versed nimbus
#

So you need a canbus connection and 24v and ground

dusky rose
#

Can i remove the rj45 adapter board and wiring?

versed nimbus
#

Can you take a picture of your current electronics bay please

dusky rose
#

its tight under there already id like to put the can adapter in its place

versed nimbus
#

Agreed

dusky rose
#

the blue cables and board

cursive phoenix
#

what do they go to? that is a very unusual setup

dusky rose
#

one is a thermistor

versed nimbus
#

Let me see if I can dig up some more info

dusky rose
#

the blue usb cables are rj45

cursive phoenix
#

can you show us where they go?

dusky rose
dusky rose
versed nimbus
dusky rose
#

the wires my fingers are on go to the main mcu

versed nimbus
#

@cursive phoenix it seems like the pi is connected to the mcus via rj45

dusky rose
#

one set go to a heat sink

cursive phoenix
#

both of the RJ45 go to the toolhead yes?

versed nimbus
#

Its a very uncommon setup now. But im assuming it was more common back in the dwy

#

No, they both go to mainbords

dusky rose
versed nimbus
#

Actually, they are toolhead board cables

cursive phoenix
#

lets let the user answer questions then

dusky rose
#

Yes the blue ones come off that board and go to toolhead

cursive phoenix
#

ok then they are not needed if you are going to a CAN toolhead board

dusky rose
#

That’s what im thinkg too i want to remove that setup and put this adapter board in its place

#

Another set if wires black and red go to a part cooling fan it says

cursive phoenix
#

part cooling would be on the toolhead. does it actually go to a fan

dusky rose
#

It comes off that board and goes to mcu

cursive phoenix
#

so it goes TOO the toolhead

#

the MCU is currently the source for all of that wiring

dusky rose
#

Ya the part cooling fan wires

cursive phoenix
#

so as I said ALL of the wiring going to the board with the 2 RJ45s needs removed

dusky rose
#

Then these few go
To the main mcu i cant read what plug it is i have to get my glasses

#

None of them go to power supply

cursive phoenix
#

Which actual EBB SB board did you get cause USB and CAN are different models

dusky rose
cursive phoenix
dusky rose
#

Ok cool, i removed everything on the rj45 breakout board and got it out of there got the new adapter in place i can see i will need longer power supply wires for it. i will head over to that site and go from there. Thank you

versed nimbus
#

@dusky rose before you remove too much do you have all the printed parts you need for the upgrade

dusky rose
#

yes i believe so i got all that printed beforehand

dusky rose
#

when wiring stepper motor how do i know what wires go where?

cursive phoenix
#

generally a multimeter is the only gurantee

dusky rose
#

what am i looking for with that, sorry im not understanding if im looking for continuity between wires?

cursive phoenix
#

yes

dusky rose
#

looks like they assemble the toolhead boards then do the flashing is that correct?

cursive phoenix
#

you can do the flash before installing just gotta make sure it doesn't short anything out

dusky rose
#

i already have the wiring apart that will give me errors when i power up printer and ssh into it is that ok?

cursive phoenix
#

yes, you don't need klipper functional to flash

dusky rose
#

sounds good Thanks

#

one other question im replacing the ntc100 thermistor with a pt1000 so do i go ahead and put it in now then edit the cfg with the rest of it also im adding leds to stealthburner so do it as well in cfg i have the file to add already

cursive phoenix
#

yes?
Users choice really there

dusky rose
#

On this probe section it shows 5 wires, my klicky probe has 2 wires how do i make it work?

cursive phoenix
#

you don't have those probes. You need GND and GPIO pin

dusky rose
#

does it matter which gpio pin theres 2?

#

GPIO21 GPIO22

cursive phoenix
#

does it not show other uses of that port?

dusky rose
#

Not that i see.im going to use the GPIO21 PORT I THINK

dusky rose
#

Well im shutdown until i can get a 4 pin dupont connector they sent 2 5 pins in the kit but no 4 pin. i have everything but a 4 pin here so i ordered some. other than the stepper motor i believe i have the rest of the wiring done. only one question for now, my xy and z endstops are on my 2nd main board i just leave those there i presume?

cursive phoenix
#

we shouldnt be using dupont

#

and yes i believe so

dusky rose
#

The black connectors?

#

And i do have another question, this red box with the GPIO's what is that?

cursive phoenix
#

pins for the stepper driver

dusky rose
#

ok there are 5 i have 4 wires which do i use

#

sm connectors? the black ones.

cursive phoenix
dusky rose
dusky rose
#

Maybe i should clarify myself, do i need to put those pin numbers into my config like the sensor pins and all the other ones when i get it up and running?

daring loom
#

and no- all the other stepper config under [extruder] and [tmc2209 extruder] that should already be in place for your example code will take care of that

dusky rose
daring loom
#

Indicate the “5 driver pins”

dusky rose
#

what

cursive phoenix
#

the driver pins are internal to the PCB and go to its control chip (thats why they are in a red box instead of showing wires to them) . your Motor goes to the 4 pins marked A1/A2/B1/B2.

dusky rose
#

That's how i have it, didn't know if i needed to do anything in the cfg as far as adding them. So when i continue with the update after i get the plug im waiting on the instructions say go to github at one point is that to upload an example and is there some point i will have to change anything, do i need to write down the GPIO pins that everything thats plugged into the toolhead boards?

daring loom
dusky rose
#

That one does seem simple enough.

daring loom
#

line 8 needs changing

line 33 may need changing depending on your hotend, although if you are talking about PT1000 that adds some complexity depending on if your PT1000 has 4 pins or 2

otherwise it's ready to use, once included

dusky rose
#

Line 28 needs changed and its a 2 pin pt1000

#

this gets added to where now?

daring loom
#

so for a 2 pin pt1000 all you need to do is change sensor_type on line 33 to PT1000

and yes, rotation distance needs calibration, that's not part of initial setup though

dusky rose
#

ok and i have the rotation distance wrote down its 22.something

daring loom
#

how have you calibrated it if you've been asking all these questions about setting up the board?

dusky rose
#

I have had it running for months i did all that im just upgrading to the usb now

daring loom
#

new board = new calibration

#

same with all your toolhead calibrations. you will need new PID, new Z offsets, the whole works

dusky rose
#

ok got it, no problem there.

#

doesnt it use some of the original file also? or no idk just asking

#

stepper motors macros those things

daring loom
#

no macros should need changing

dusky rose
#

so basically toolhead things in general

daring loom
#

that's a very vague statement

#

i'm sorry if we're picking on your communication quite a lot, but a lot of your statements are open ended or lacking reference, and quite hard to answer clearly

dusky rose
#

ya i should have put a question mark behind it because it was more of a question

#

im not good at computers thats why at the very beginning i said for someone that isnt a computer nerd

#

i recently retired from a construction welder after 40 years and i havnt had much experience with computers but i like the hobby and i also like the building process of updating the voron thats why i didnt get a bamboo or something much simpler. i just am looking for help in understanding what this process is bringing so i can somewhat know how to go about it. Im sorry if my questions aren't clear as most others.

dusky rose
#

Can anyone help with this error i have after adding the sb2209 usb

cursive phoenix
#

post your klipper log file

dusky rose
#

Ok I'll get it

#

Is there a way to copy it without holding mouse button down and scrolling its a mile long would take forever?

cursive phoenix
#

yes, go to the system tab and there should be a button to download it

dusky rose
cursive phoenix
#

so looks like you added info for the EBB but didn't remove the old information it was replacing

dusky rose
#

i added the config he said to the other day it said to add to printer.cfg to include that sample but no i didnt erase anything

cursive phoenix
#

ok well you will need to. it still looking at the old pin for extruder heater

dusky rose
#

can i hashtag the original extruder section?

cursive phoenix
#

not ALL of it most likely, though I don't recall exactly whats in what you added

dusky rose
#

i added this then put my PT1000 IN THERE

#

thats the new sample file not all of it but the extruder part

cursive phoenix
#

I suspect the old rotation distance will be more accurate but should be confirmed either way
Which port did you actually connect your pt1000 to?

dusky rose
#

the one on the toolhead board, and moved the switch to the PT1000 setting

#

GPIO26

cursive phoenix
#

ok

dusky rose
#

Im getting an ohm reading at plug of 1478ish

#

15c air temp

cursive phoenix
#

great, you need to go comment out the old stuff

dusky rose
#

ok the extruder section? not the stepper part of extruder section?

#

lines 281-386

#

306 i mean

cursive phoenix
#

I would copy the rotation_distance and gear ratio lines to the new section but otherwise yes that whole section

dusky rose
#

ok

#

ok got that done still same error

#

i have 2 green lights on each mainboard green light at toolhead board and red light at pi

cursive phoenix
#

lights don't matter at this point, do you have all of the same errors or one less

dusky rose
#

this one

cursive phoenix
#

so less errors

#

new klippy log please

dusky rose
cursive phoenix
#

why is this a txt file instead of a log file

dusky rose
#

idk ill try again

#

same?

#

Im copying it then pasting it

cursive phoenix
#

did you not find the download button

dusky rose
#

no

cursive phoenix
#

system tab bottom right, button says klippy

#

what switch did you say you changed? I don't see anything about moving a switch in the manual

dusky rose
cursive phoenix
#

there is a + on the left side of the discord text bar that will let you then upload the file instead of having to copy

dusky rose
#

thanks

cursive phoenix
#

what switch did you say you changed? I don't see anything about moving a switch in the manual

dusky rose
cursive phoenix
#

it doesn't say to change anything there

dusky rose
#

has PT one side and NTC on other

#

somewhere i read if using a PT1000 to switch it

cursive phoenix
#

ok well put it back

dusky rose
#

ok

#

good call that did it

cursive phoenix
#

you have more things to work on config wise, as that last log still has fans wrong MCU. you will want to go through each section in the new file

dusky rose
#

ya i will, the fans are plugged into the locations it shows idk

cursive phoenix
#

klipper read last is best so if it is in both files then the last version it sees is what is used

dusky rose
#

Oh ok i see

#

Thanks for the help, i will get back to going thru it.

dusky rose
#

Ok while working on this changeover i have this error now, i havnt done anything to that section any ideas?

inland token
#

[temperature_sensor chamber]
sensor_type: ATC Semitec 104NT-4-R025H42G
sensor_pin: P0.23
min_temp: 0
max_temp: 120

I think you are missing a [probe] here
which is why klipper throws that error, it thinks that the rows below this row belongs to temp chamber
pin: ^z:P0.10
x_offset: 0

dusky rose
#

I have been using it like this for a while now but since i am changing to the sb2209 it's throwing this now

inland token
#

Yeah, uncomment [probe], save and restart and see what happens. Might not be it, but wont hurt

dusky rose
inland token
# dusky rose

It's another error now, so it did something.

Pin value is currently TH1 P0.23. TH1 is the connector label.

Change the line to: sensor_pin: P0.23

dusky rose
#

Ended up being the section under probe in fan control section i hashtagged the hot_end_fan section because its on the toolhead board but klipper didnt like that i guess

inland token
dusky rose
#

appreciate the help thank you, i have stepper issues as well but i will mess with it more tomorrow.

cursive phoenix
dusky rose
daring loom
#

can you update me where we're at here- remind me current toolhead board- P2.4 is not a typical toolhead board pin naming

dusky rose
#

btt eb2209 vol 1

#

btt eb sb2209 usb v1.0.1

cursive phoenix
dusky rose
#

I am going thru the initial start up procedures as described in the voron documentation

cursive phoenix
#

send us your ebb cfg and printer cfg files (not as a zip)

dusky rose
#

is a screenshot of the fan sections ok?

cursive phoenix
#

you have 3 conflicting config sections that I can see
Please list them as you find them,

dusky rose
#

Im sure the fan section in printer.cfg is one of them?

#

I agree klipper is trying to use the original from printer.cfg i just dont know how to fix it

cursive phoenix
#

comment the WHOLE section out

dusky rose
#

ok the WHOLE fan control section?

#

Got it commented out

cursive phoenix
#

ok try your fan test again after a firmware restart

dusky rose
#

ok

cursive phoenix
#

actually get me a screenshot too

dusky rose
#

still no fan

cursive phoenix
#

did you comment it out in printer.cfg or the ebb cfg

dusky rose
#

printer

cursive phoenix
#

ok, screenshot

dusky rose
cursive phoenix
#

when I said whole fan section. I meant the fans we were replacing control of.
You'll want to uncomment the controller fan as it is still done by the old MCU

dusky rose
cursive phoenix
#

ok, and are you doing firmware restart after these changes

dusky rose
#

yes

#

save and restart

cursive phoenix
#

ok I guess klippy log will show the final actual usage, if you wanna drop a new copy of that
otherwise its a wiring issue

dusky rose
#

the fan does work the other day when i tried it they were backwards the part fan i could control on the interface the hot end fan came on so i switched them at the board on faceplate now when i do it the part fan works

cursive phoenix
#

did you plug into a 2 pin or 4 pin connector

dusky rose
#

they are both 2 pin

cursive phoenix
#

there is a 4 pin fan connector so I wanted to check as it has different control pins

dusky rose
#

Confirmed wiring issue, one pin on that plug the barb that locks it in was broken and caused it to slip out when plugging in issue fixed fan works as it should

dusky rose
#

on the probe section now, i noticed in the sample file for toolhead board there is a probe section Bl touch and another probe section hashtagged out how do i add my klicky probe into there? It's on pin gpio23 on toolhead board.

cursive phoenix
#

replace the pin in what you had before with the new pin

dusky rose
#

on the printer.cfg?

cursive phoenix
#

yeah

#

you can copy it all to the new one if you prefer

dusky rose
#

10-4

#

Then comment out the old one in printer.cfg?

cursive phoenix
#

assuming its now mostly duplicated yeah

dusky rose
#

ok working on it

cursive phoenix
#

so again you have commented something out incorrectly

dusky rose
cursive phoenix
#

when I say a section I mean from the header (in []) to the next header

dusky rose
#

So i need the header in there as well

cursive phoenix
#

yeah, its what tell klipper what you're talking about

dusky rose
#

got it, you said there were 3 conflicts was that number 2?

cursive phoenix
#

IDK that was hours ago or yesterday

dusky rose
#

lol ok im moving forward then, so far everything is working if all goes well my next question will be the led's i have the file saved to add im sure there is something else i will have to do

#

i have the file added to the machine i think i need to [include] it in printer then idk

cursive phoenix
#

yes, otherwise klipper won't read it

dusky rose
#

Dangit almost made it to the end then when doing z endstop calibrate it says unknown command

#

it will let me do it as a z endstop calibrate and i can accept but it wont let me save config

daring loom
# dusky rose

This is because your z offset value is currently in an included file (probably the BTT ebb one) and needs to be cut and then pasted into the [extruder] section of the main printer.cfg

dusky rose
#

I am not seeing it anywhere maybe you can idk

#

And while you are in there see if you can see why i have no extruder working lol

daring loom
#

urgh i wrote the wrong section header for you i'm very sorry

#

look in the [probe] section in the ebb file it's currently z_offset: 0 , transplant that to the probe section of the printer.cfg

dusky rose
#

ok

#

Everywhere i try to put it i get an error

#

because i have the probe section commented out it gives me a temp sensor chamber error which is the last one before probe

#

ok i uncommented [probe] and it let me do it

daring loom
#

yep

dusky rose
#

Seems like when i first power it up i get lost communication errors every 2 min for a little bit

#

Do you see anything in the files conflicting with extruder that would cause it to not work? everything else works but the stepper on it

cursive phoenix
#

Is the hotend hot?

dusky rose
#

shows it is let me phiscally see

cursive phoenix
#

Is it above 180? Cause that’s normally the default you can’t extrude below this value

#

And would give you warnings in console

dusky rose
#

yes i can manually push filament thru

#

theres just nothing there no noise or movement

cursive phoenix
#

Is it showing above 180C ?
Do you see the commands going through in console?

dusky rose
#

I dont see the commands going thru

#

It's still giving me the unknown when i try Test Z 1

dusky rose
#

This is going to be a problem it loses communication every 3min i cant do any tests like this dam

inland token
#

Whats the error message?

dusky rose
#

Loses communication

#

the yellow error

inland token
# dusky rose

can? That error message is quite literally that the mcu is losing its connection to your toolhead board. Try poking umbilical cable and see if you can reproduce this issue. My guess is that crimp/cable is bad, the one that goes from your toolhead board to your mcu, or whatever it is you connected the cable to.

dusky rose
#

It's the usb 2209

#

I am wiggling the cable and it doesn't lose communication

#

It's random may do it every few minutes or may do it once in 15min

inland token
#

Does it also lose connection when the printer is sitting idle, or only when the toolhead is moving?

dusky rose
#

both

#

stayed on all nite the other nite with no shutdown then today its horrible

inland token
#

I don’t have experience with your specific toolhead board, so I’ll leave the detailed troubleshooting to someone who does.
I’ve had very similar issues with my EBB36, and nine times out of ten, it’s been a bad cable.

dusky rose
#

I have read that too about the cable, makes no sense they send a cable with the kit and you have to find a better one

#

Thers's no way it will print like this i cant even get thru the calibration process lol

daring loom
# dusky rose Thers's no way it will print like this i cant even get thru the calibration proc...

If you don’t get any further responses in here for the next couple of hours and you are still keen to work on the machine for a while longer, you would be welcome to open a #request_help ticket. This will draw the attention of the helping team. You will need to outline the hardware you have , the problems you are having, and provide klipper logs and many photos of the machine.

Do wait for a bit as one of the other prior visitors to this thread may come back. I am not currently available for prolonged troubleshooting sorry.

dusky rose
#

All good i have some errands to run shortly, i will see if anyone comments before i take off then check back in a little later. Thanks

dusky rose
#

Anyone have a few minutes to help with some issues im having before i request help later?

dusky rose
#

Well i managed to work my way thru it, a few curse words and couple thrown tools but i got everything going except for the leds. it's showing them in the macro's but not being called in the console. I'll figure it out eventually.
