#Assistance in sourcing for first build of V2

After diving into FDM last year with an Ender3V3KE I have decided to build a Voron from scratch. I'm a pretty handy person and feel like it is something I can handle and will be a fun winter project. I have watched a few videos and gone over the config guides and have now started to build my shopping carts online.

I have had a few bumps here and there with links in the Sourcing Guide being out of date or not being the exact correct part (more of an issue with AliExpress, which I don't have a lot of experience with). For the most part I have managed to find the right parts until now. The 1 per customer limit is frustrating becuase I can't order enough berings!

Anyway, for the line "Hotend Kit (24v)" there isn't anything in the sourcing page for the Voron2, I do see some hotends listed on the options tab.

TLDR:
Do I just pick any old hotend? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Couple of questions for you @brisk socket

#

How much of the build have you purchased

#

Whats your budget

#

What toolhead, extruder and size are you building?

brisk socket
#

nothing purchase, no budget really. Looking at the Stealthburner so I can eventually do multi-head. 350x350

Where are you located? (Grab a country flag in #rules )

I had not looked at formbot but I will look into it

they make good kits for a fair price. nothing fancy, a little less handholding than the LDO kits but that is ususually fine for most folks

#

as for build order, your best bet is to build stock, then upgrade.

There are always these forum posts or help tickets if you get stuck

if you do get the formbot kit, i recomend starting with the tzv6 hotend and get your printed parts via PIF, the print it forward program

barren ruin
#

Formbot printed parts have a reputation. And not a good one

brisk socket
#

I was going to print my own with the Ender, I need to build a makeshift enclosure first though.

also if you break a part, you have someone who can help you out

I printed my own V0 parts on an ender 3v2 and what I thought was good quality at the time I would toss in the trash now. I rebuilt the v0 about 3 times with bootstrapped parts it printed for itself, slowly getting better each time

brisk socket
#

none of this is about saving money for me, it's the fun of the build and learning as much as possible while doing it so I understand upgrades better

#

Maybe I'm crazy but that actually sounds like fun

barren ruin
#

Rebuilds take the fun out of it for me. I enjoy building, but then I want a functional machine that I can just enjoy for a while. If you want the challenge though, it is how a lot of us started in voron.

brisk socket
#

does it take long for the PIF stuff? I haven't dug into it much yet. Looks like you fill out a form and they connect you with someone, correct?

barren ruin
brisk socket
#

oh, that's not bad, will take a bit for the other stuff to get here too

Current US queue is 1 person lol

I just got a formbot kit and pif parts a couple weeks ago, ordered the kit and the pif on the same day and the pif parts showed up almost a week before my kit

#

Formbot kit was shipped US to US too

I would agree on the quality side too, I was thinking about printing my own as well, but I was blown away with the quality on the pif parts. For me that was a very good decision, I didn't want to deal with figuring out abs printing on my old printer

Part of me wishes I had seen the Formbot earlier but honestly if I hadn't been pounding my head against the wall (AliExpress) I would not have seen how nice of an option it is. I have shopping carts built on BoltDepot, DigiKey, RobotDigg and AliExpress.

Unless you have actually purchased these parts, I would not worry about the lost time.

brisk socket
#

Not lost time if you learn from it. 🙂

I learned it's a pain in the ass.

Learning is part of the process, right @timber ice

Ok, so shifting gears. How hard is upgrading to multi-tool and is that the right way to go for multicolor prints?

#

Note: I am NOT doing this as a part of the initial build. That is later.

torn quail
#

Depends on how much time you want to put in.

#

I know @drifting plank and @fossil kelp have done SC builds

#

But I haven't

I'm kinda at a similar place as you, I don't have much experience with the stealth changer and haven't even finished my voron build yet so I'm certainly no expert. But from my research, you have three options, an AMS which wastes filament on color change and there are open source AMS so you could build your own. You can do a tool changer which comes with all the complexities of a tool changer. Or there's the IDEX? Can't remember the name for sure, but this just changes the hotend I believe, not a full tool change. That's relatively new though and seems like it also adds complexity to the build.

I plan on going stealth changer because I want to do multi material which doesn't work well with AMS, and I also hate the waste from the purge poops on multi color in AMS.

brisk socket
#

the waste is what is keeping me from multicolor for sure. The biggest reason I'm even building something is the 220x220 on my Ender3 is starting to limit my projects. I want to go bigger but with something that can be heavily modded as I go, thus, here I am looking at the Voron.

Plus I love the idea of building it myself. This shop needs to get used!

thanks everyone! Ordering the Formbot 2.4 R2 Ultra 350^3 and putting in a PIF request. I hope the next time you hear from me is showing the build process and not asking for help! 🙂

# brisk socket Ok, so shifting gears. How hard is upgrading to multi-tool and is that the right...

If you can build a Voron from a kit and PIF parts, you can definitely build a toolchanger. I was choosing between INDX and StealthChanger, and ultimately decided to go with StealthChanger because I didn’t want to be locked into Bondtech’s ecosystem and their specific tools.

StealthChanger does require much tighter tolerances when it comes to the docks and related parts. Tip if you decide to go that route: if something doesn’t feel or look right, just reprint it. I spent way too much time being stubborn and trying to make poorly printed or out-of-tolerance parts work.

Have fun!

Their GitHub build guide still has instructions for Tap, even though the newer kit has an eddy sensor. Could be a lot of mistakes on their side, lol

#

One of the pictures on their GitHub has a stepper driver installed upside down so I wouldn't be surprised

My Voron kit is showing up on Friday but I have not heard back on my PIF request. I know this is all volunteer driven so I get it. How soon into the build will I start needing the printed parts? I plan on spending a few hours this weekend working on the build and aiming to have it fully done over 4-6 weekends. Should I look at other options on sourcing the printed parts? I'm going to avoid printing them on the old Ender as it doesn't seem like a great idea.
