#Heat creep? SB, CW2, Rapido

Hi there,

I recently got a second hand v2 and am new to 3D/Voron printers and the community. 👋

The toolhead is a Stealthburner with CW2 and Phaetus Rapido.
FYSETC 4010 fan for the hotend.
(When looking for "heat creep" I do see an awful lot of Rapido coming up.)

When manually extruding PLA (temp 190-220C, bed temp 55C) at 1 mm/s (2.8 mm³/s) and 2 mm/s (5.5 mm³/s) the filament comes out fine. When I go up to 5 mm/s (13.7 mm³/s) the filament comes out with an "accordion effect": fast, nothing/retracting/compacting, fast.

Initially I thought the extruder was losing grip, but after re-assembly of the CW2 and pushing filament through it fairly hard by hand (definitely faster than 5 mm/s) before losing grip, I dropped that thought.

I tried temps ranging between 175 and 235C and performed a couple cold pulls (some gunk did come out), but neither got me to push 5 mm/s.

All this is with the enclosure but doors open. Ambient temp in the chamber is ~30-32C.

Uncertain what to do next to determine whether it's heat creep. Get rid of the 4010 (temporarily) and attempt to cool the heat break more aggressively? I could get out a compressor, but before I literally blow my printer to bits, I would rather hear your thoughts!

A better 4010 fan would be my fist recommendation. Where are you so we can recommend a quality vendor?

Netherlands

#

So look at EU stores like myrigs in France

Cheers, I will give that a shot! The toolhead does have the BTT EBB SB0000 CAN (RP2040) board, so there is a tacho pin that I could use(?). Will have to put on DuPont on anyway.

I'll get a 5015 to match (definitely not because I fried it in my endeavours to grab a bit of broken filament with metal tweezers on a powered printer 😬).

good plan.

unfortunately many of the cheaper kit's fans give the stealthburner a chance at working as well as we know it can

Getting a bit ahead of the solution, and possibly dodging the issue altogether, but would a Dragon Burner provide better hotend cooling?

I may want to switch to using that in preparation to adding a tool changer (somewhere down the road).
Leaving that until after I try the new fans could also be an answer.

generally speaking i would probably suggest moving away from the rap1 first

but yes- the majority of the more modern toolheads will have more optimised fans for going faster with- dragonburner/rapidburner, A4T, anthead, and so on

the downside of those toolheads is the relative lack of build manuals and the often mind-boggling number of options available to fit different extruders (which you would have to source), different hotends (which can be confusingly named), and the fact you would need to source alternative toolhead electronics

Thanks for the advice! If the LDO fans are insufficient for cooling the heat break of this Rapido, I will have a look at changing that out first. Keeping into account that the hotend I may upgrade to will be compatible with the Dragon Burner.

I'm doubting whether it's actually a Rapido 1. If it is, then the printhead parts (P-DRG) don't match even though it fits.
It doesn't look like the Dragons I can find online currently. I've no idea when this toolhead was assembled, so not sure if this would be an earlier Dragon iteration(?).

The top of the heatsink to the nozzle's tip is about 45-46 mm.
Current design of a Dragon looks quite a bit taller, not to mention the "open core" design.

So as a game of "Who's that hotend?"; can anyone tell which hotend this is? Or should I just write this off as some type of clone and get a Dragon (edit: ST, UHF is maybe not a good fit for the ducts?) to fit the SB instead?

Edit:
It's definitely not a Rapido or Rapido Plus, going by the wireframes found at:
https://github.com/Phaetus/Rapido
https://github.com/Phaetus/Rapido-Plus

There are no supporting tubes that the Rapido has, and it doesn't have that same shape as the Rapido.

Well it’s not a rapido. At a vague guess some sort of CHC type AliExpress job.
