Hello,
I ordered a kit from formbot with dragon HF hotend, but they sent me a V6 hotend.
I ordered PIF from @neat veldt, he printed the dragon HF printhead (as expected, thanks!), but now I am stuck with the wrong hotend...
Do you think I can print the v6 printhead using PETG? (my local fablab don't allow printing ABS, but can print PETG or PLA) My first print will obviously be the proper V6 printhead in ABS to replace it.
Thanks!

the alternative would be ordering a better hotend in the dragon mount you have

#

the V6, whilst fine for a basic beginner hotend, is just that- you'll quickly run into limits with it

My goal is to be able to setup it "fast", I booked an extended weekend to build it, that why I am looking to print in PETG (I could have the missing parts tomorrow)
If formbot reply and send me the proper head, yes, I will swich, but I expect it to be "slow" (at least a week)

i would not condone printing a hotend mount in PETG, to answer that question, it might survive for a print or two, but it is really not designed to be printed in that material

okk, too bad, I will havae to wait 😢. I hope formbot will be fast to reply (at least to refund me the extra 60$ it costed me to order the dragon instead of the v6)

Thanks!

They have been very responsive to my support request. Send an email, you might get a reply same day.

Hoo, I just read the description again, and yes, it may be shiped directly from china! I will wait for their reply then, thanks! (but in this case, I am a bit surprised to have the v6 in the box)

As a stopgap measure if you're in a hurry, a PETG hotend mount probably wouldn't be that bad, although definitely not something that will be reliable long-term. With decent amounts of hotend cooling (keep the fan turning fairly fast) and not-too-high chamber temperatures, it should remain below the temperature where it can start deforming (somewhere north of 65°C, the top of the heatsink where it touches the printed plastic shouldn't get all that hot).

#

Not sure if there would be fitment issues, as the parts are designed to print in ABS/ASA (with a slight amount of shrinkage).

I think I will try yes, I will monitor the print all the time, so it should be fine (or not fine, but it should not break the printer)

I think realistic worst case is that the part where the hotend mounts gets deformed and the hotend bends / falls off, tearing off thermistor or heater wires. But from what I've seen of PETG deforming when warm, as long as you keep temperatures reasonable and don't push for high accels, I think such a deformation would be a rather slow process (if it happens at all).

#

I ran a PETG hotend mount for years, though on an unenclosed Voron 1.5 (and not a big "shroud" around the hotend like on a stealthburner). Still, the top of the hotend (a V6) was held by printed PETG parts, hotend cooling was rather weak, and it held up just fine. So in all, not a good idea, but you could very well get away with it just fine.

Formbot will send you the Dragon, look in your mail inbox (spam aswell)

#

They don't send the Dragon together with the kit, but in a separate package directly from China

#

They also mention this on their website

#

V6 being in the box even when you ordered Dragon is normal, was the same for me

#

In my case I had an email from Formbot with the tracking number of the Dragon on the day I ordered

Hooooo, you right

#

But bad new...

status: "returned"

Oh damn, then definitely contact Formbot support again

#

For me after "Shipment Processed" there was "Departure Scan" like 1 hour after

#

So something went wrong

yes, but this is an enclosed printer that is primarily intended to be printing ABS, so that would not be safe. i have to give the safest answer here, not something that's happened to work for one person on a non voron printer.

It seems to work, I cross finger to have time to print the head in ABS before the PETG fail

Dont worry. In case something doesnt work out i will send you additional parts. Just let me know early 😉
