#Scratchy noises during movement - primarily from diagonal back right to front left

I recently bought a used 2.4 from someone who printed exclusively ASA on it for two years. The inside has a slightly tacky residue of VOCs on the frame and i'm concerned this guming something up.

It prints okay, i haven't tuned much yet, but i notice tht it has extremely loud scratchy noises during particular movements

see the video here:
https://streamable.com/qglqfq

It's loudest when it's moving from home to (0,0) in a straight diagonal, and quietest in the opposite diagonal, but all directions have some amount fo scratchiness

I disabled the motors and noticed it's not particularly easy to push the X carriage left/right, but having never owned a voron or CoreXY machine i didnt know if this was normal.

Do i need to disassemble this entire thing to figure out the issue?

@sharp herald one more question: this guide shows how to do it when the rails are totally removed (like building it for the first time)

should i totally disassemble the gantry to do this? or is there a good way to do while its all assembled?

sharp herald
#

U have to disassemble

#

Remove only the parts that are screwed to the linear rail carriages

#

Then u can remove the rail, clean it and grease

#

4 of each is good

slim finch
#

got it, ok. no shortcuts 🙂

since im removing the rail would it be a good idea to like clean off the old gunk with alcohol or something?

sharp herald
#

This is to ensure the rails sits perfectly in the middle

slim finch
#

well i assume there is old grase and ASA VOC gunk on the rail from the previous 2k hours of printing ASA

oh yeahp

#

there it is

#

lesson is to RTFM :p

sharp herald
#

No worries

slim finch
#

ok so i'll print these rail guides then disassemble and clean, thanks again!

sharp herald

If u attach a zip tie to both ends of the rail, the carriage wont fall off. Thats how i do it

slim finch
#

will do, thanks for the tip!

# sharp herald Let us know how it goes

i know this is 6 months late but i had a major surgery and other things that prevented me from fixing this printer. I ended taking off all the linear rails (including the Z rails), drowning them in Isoproply Alcohol, and regreasing them with Mobilux. Since the entire printer had a tacky ASA film on it i also cleaned that off and took the time to purchase new Gates GT2 belts to replace those as well. Finally over the weekend assembled it all again.

the whole process took probably 20-25 hours but since this is my first Voron and i bought it used it gave me a chance to really learn about the system.

The printer is running again and the concerning scratchy noise is completely gone!
