I know it's not the motor, at least I think, but I have noticed something odd, I can manually push filament through than close the latch and it's basically snug in there, but after trying to extrude some filemant it seems to stutter while at a 2mm/s feedrate. but after trying to extrude filament via the extruder I noticed that I'm able to just pull out the filament without opening the latch with some or no effort.

@formal agate did you put loktite on the drive gear in this step?
it's a modified CW2 that uses HGX gears so there isn't any grub screws on the gears
based on your initial post it sounds like its too tight which causes the motor to skip, filament to get stuck, and the gears to grind the filament, which is why you can then pull it out without loosening the latch.
Got it to work but as it turns out it was heat creep from my sunon fan
