Rough idea, wondering if it's worth writing up a full ruleset.

The basic idea is, it would be like normal armor normally, and take up slots, but you could 'turn it on' and have it function as ferro-lam, except it builds 10 heat. Or something.

So like, you turn on magnets or whatever, and the armor locks up harder than usual.

Thoughts?

So basically Blue Field particle dampeners but for armor instead of it being a pice of addon kit.

My question is, how could this concept be tuned so it would be an interesting decision point?

You don't use MASC every turn, only when you need the movement enough to risk the damage. So could a 'failure chance' make this system worthwhile? Have an escalation die that, if you fail the roll, it breaks the system and does damage to your armor?

Do you have a suggestion for how a 'sometimes on armor upgrade' could be designed to be balanced and an interesting gameplay decision point?

The ability to 'toggle on' ferro lam style effect is pretty powerful. So itd have to be something also fairly impactful else everyone would eat the negative. Like +1 to hit and to piloting.
But the problem then becomes of "why arent you just using ferro lam?".
If the answer is you arent clans so you just dont have access to it only goes so far as later on clan stuff becomes fairly common

Now if this was an armor 'enhancer', thatd be a whole different story

What would an armor enhancer be like?

Basically something that modifies the base armor. So if you had standard armor with this, it would be just like a jury rigged Ferro Lam.
But if you had say laser reflective, youd have armor that takes reduced laser damage, thats further reduced by this dissipator like enhancement.
For the trade off of the 10 heat and +1/+1 [or something similar]

The idea I had was more like it gets harder (and so maybe impact resistant?), like oobleck.

Its like a variant of the blue shield, it inhibits all energy weapons coming and going through the field

Oh so like the harder the kinetic impact, the more it protects. Like a reverse ferrolam, instead of prorecting you most from lbx pellets it protects you most from gauss slugs

Hm, that's an idea.

So have it take extra space to mount, but no other penalties.
Its got the same pips per ton as standard, however when subject to ppcs, missiles and ballistics will protect from any damage beyond say 8 from affecting you
