I feel like ive been at a road block when it comes to my shading and lighting. I wanna keep it cartoony but detailed. Ive been experimenting with different lighting and shading styles but i cant seem to find something that i like. If anyone has any advice that would be greatly appreciated 🙏
Below are some examples of my work🩵

It's probably because you don't seem to do a lot of actual backgrounds, more "visual" backgrounds if you know what I mean, atleast that's what I've seen in a lot of your works.
So basically since the background has no shading, nor a light source, the shading on the character is more of a complementary thing, a nice bonus, rather than actually giving the impression of light hitting the character.

So basically, either do more backgrounds with physical elements, or try adding a light source to some of these backgrounds, like for example, adding a spotlight, and darkening the background around where the light isn't hitting it.

Use three or four levels of color gradient for flat shadows. In shadow, use red, dark red, reddish-brown, and black. And vice versa for light, or only in the light sources, use a color of the same color as what you want to illuminate but leaning more towards white.
