Hate the background. What can I do ?

Its not finished at all - I just started with the shading of the characters.
I also started with the background - its far from complete but I think even if I would work more on it, i still would not like it.
idk its an important piece for me personally so maybe it's just me and nothing is good enough.

I think the background looks flat (not just because its not finished and lacks shading and so on) and ugly somehow in its composition.

any tips on how to improve this ?

one very smart way to avoid background f you know they are giving you issues justuse gausian blur on it

but if not i think i can sketch out a correction for you

another tip if you knwo there s gonna be a background in your scene always do that first and then move on to the characters it helps to know to light your characters and the mood you are going for

I thought the scene was very clear in my mind, but apparently not clear enough.
maybe i should also change the format of the image, im not sure. the more i look at it the less happy i am with it

I haven't dove deep enough in the creation of background but I know that a simple way to make it more interesting is to give it a structure

you can make you of them if you want
but you really nailed it with the color combo though the colors and lighting is really nice

I underestimated creating a background that involves a room.... i noticed i only did this one time before lol i always avoid it

i usually just draw nature and wing it XD

cause they are leaning and her hands are resting on somthing and theres nothing there cause that chinmey is too far for her to be placing her hand on

well if it helps you can definitely do something for 20 minutes and then come back to the painting with some fresh eyes

small update x) i scribbled some "new" versions of the background, I tried to set the perspective lower for the floor and chminey .
I hope those sketches look better... think I'll go with 1 or 2.
I also made the couple smaller that should also fix the issue with the mistle toe , hopefully
