If u wanna be realistic then u can just draw their eyes closed. But If u wanna keep the X I think there are ways to incorporate it :))
One is giving them a regular eye, but putting a scar on their face so that it kinda looks like an X. You could also just give them an eyepatch with an X mark.
You dont necessarily need to stick to the cartoon ver if its impossible irl
