He only knew yesterday without any warning and without any chance to do something about it, and they told him they will announce this publicly 12h later. He think this happens because KOI was not a good organisation during this tenure, no good results, skins didnt sell well, etc.
Speculation from him, not confirmed, is that GentleM8 were relegated and they are an important team for Riot, so this is a way to have them again on EMEA, but specutalion.
