I'd post the reply of another dev saying if DLC causes FOMO that's my own fault for having human psychology, not the poor game company just trying to stay afloat but I already blocked them so

imo whether DLC is pleasant or not depends on the price of the base game and how much content it brings

like warcraft 3's expansion would probably be a DLC today, which costs around the same as the base game and had 4 whole new campaigns with new races and map objectives

Pokémon MD EoS is also basically its prequels with some new pokemon, one new story mission, the Cafe where you can trade junk for useful items, and side stories

which could have been a DLC instead of reselling the same game another time

but the extra stuff was really good so people were happy anyway

Like, based on how you look at it, the past 3 Mario Sports games on Switch have had more game come out after release. I think all 3 of them were criticized for their poor DLC practices

its tough to say cause i haven't really bought many recent games with dlc but i think most indies do it decently well (darkest dungeon the crimson court was 2017???)

In my experience usually the dlc adds a good bunch to the game, be it something that didn't make into the cut or was added in later with good consideration of how to fit it. But then again I don't play big AAA titles to say I have bad experience with dlc, though to me the meaning is loose. Since there is paid DLC and DLC that's like more like a side free update. But then it's rarity for DLCs to be even thought about since or the game didn't make enough money for such addition, or made well more than money to be paid or just never had anything in mind for an addition. Tasteful DLCs are definitely a thing, just that DLCs I think are rarity to even happen now.

Yeah Outer Wilds is a good example. Though unsure how recent it's now.

It does, and is also worse nowadays because games are becoming more expensive relative to average income, and the number of games people are being exposed to is higher, both from more widespread social media, and the consumption cycle being faster now

Like I picked up Hades mid last year and by the time I finished there's not much new fan organized events anymore

i play almost no aaa games so i dont have to deal with ridiculous amounts of paid dlc as much

like i was going to buy civ 6 just because i heard it was good until i looked at steam and i would have to pay like $30 for a full experience even with sales because there were like 20 post release addons in one form or another

which is complete bs

like im willing to pay $30 for a good game (although i normally never do) but $30 where most of that money is dlc signals something scummy to be and is a big turn off

i dont think ill ever really get into aaa titles anyway for a plethora of reasons

i might play a dark souls game or two sometime in the future but probably wont go beyond that

to be fair (or possibly maybe biased), civ is worth the experience…but it does make sense to wait for all the dlcs first, and then decide if you’re willing to spend in order to jump in (especially for 6, it seems)

don’t know about the sims, but at least for civ you do expect there to be at least two significant dlcs with a lot of new content, or so it has been from civ 4

yeah with civ they're definitely substantial and the games are pretty complete even without them
most grand strategy games' dlcs are geared towards people who have already been playing the game for a while

same with paradox games although those are less substantial and uh
vastly more numerous

i've seen it run on the weirdest stuff
from giant blibboards to old digital cameras
i've seen someone running it on a printer, i've seen it running on a... single keybord key (it had a 80/80 display built in for icons... and that was apparently enough)

I never thought I'd ever find a game that's basically Super Hexagon with Metroidvania elements, but its a survival arcade style game like Super Hexagon structured as a Metroidvania

also corruption will spread across the world later and destroy biomes, if you want to try and take preventative measures ahead of time, but its not something to worry about until you can get around in the underworld comfortably

I found that deck rng became a lot more manageable in Slay the Spire after learning to default to not taking a card after each fight.

Only take cards if you have a plan as to how they'll fit into your deck, and budget your resources to allow you to remove cards from your deck as they become irrelevant

double healthbars and levels or whatever floating above enemies and those goddamn threat arrows around kratos

ironically - old god of war games used to zoom out the camera during combat which not only helped gameplay (cause - you know - you could see and quickly react in this quick action game without relying on some artificial stuff like floating arrows lol) but it also gave us those huge, gorgeous and cinematic vistas

and it ran at 60 - even back on the ps2
we can't have that now for some reason

10/10 "game of the generation" my sore ass
