okay, so - i'll try to make a list while trying to avoid the obvious choices
ion fury: a throwback FPS running on a build engine from 1995
great combat, awesome music, it's moody, difficult, and has a great female lead who shoots first, drinks later, asks questions - never
quake 1 remastered: do you like lovecraft? do you like when your OSTs sound like a bunch of maggots nibbling at the fleshy bit right behind your right ear? if you said yes then try quake 1 remastered
it is the boomer shooter, but the remaster has enough quality of life improvements to make it easy to get into for all new players
dusk - if you want to play the best modern interpretation of a classic shooter. it's got everything - to the point that if you don't feel like fighting you can just im-sim your way out of every level 
black mesa - a modern remake of half life 1. it's great and it's hard as hell
serious sam (any of them but 2) - just good ol light-hearted fun with hundreds of enemies on screen at the same time
and - my personal pick, and the reason why i asked about mods

but the enemies are slow enough with very telegraphed attacks that I assume it wouldn't be a problem
movement feels very nice overall, and shooting feels nice

when you aim at an enemy a grid will show up, and if you press and keep holding mouse 5 your mouse movement will now happen within that grid and that's how you do the hacking, go through an optimal path and you do more damage

It kinda played like a third person shooter but someone glued your W key and you can’t stop lol

Project wingman feels a lot slower than ac7. The time it takes you to accelerate to top speed, time to decelerate, the time it takes for your missile to reach the enemy, everything feels like 3x longer. The mission design too. In ace combat you gotta be alert and rush that objective or fail. Project wingman expects you to hunt down all these scattered targets at a leisurely pace. It feels way less intense
Your missile lock, launched from perfect angle behind the enemy, is very likely to miss in project wingman
But it makes guns much easier to hit with, so i just didn't bother with missiles at all
Also you're given unlimited flares to defend from enemy missiles.
You actually can't dodge without flares

as janky and cheap as this game is... it's actually a really, REALLY fun stealth roguelike with a little bit of an im-sim there?

the difference is - in crime simulator you go fast because you learn weird movement tricks and start abusing imsim jank
in mgs5 you go fast because you have a freakin robot

However - if you’re looking for an insane story, interesting characters, good pacing, amazing bossfights and creative setpieces - all things previous mgs games were known for - you’re not gonna find it in 5

and someone mentioned larian and they way they're justifying it is that their concept artists are using to aid in the creative process . but like ai can only make what it is fed . so no unique ideas...? and the reasonpeople are bought into worlds like baldurs gate and divinity is BECAUSE they are unique and have cool ideas
how long until they see what the ai generated and just send it to the artist and then how long until they think the ai did such a good job some bonehead decides to ship it

it's brutally hard, not because you don't have hearing mode but because you can't grab enemies from the front anymore
it's the one thing i found to be overly hard from it
the severe lack of resources and realistically aware enemies was a fun challenge
