so now i was just thonking about it so i decided to write down all the cool things marathon did that were impressive for it's time
keep in mind - m1 and m2 are 1994 and 95 - this was between doom and quake
so - we've got stellar writing, actual room-over-room levels, destructible props like lights and other stuff, environmental storytelling, branching pathways (for both story and gameplay)

dual wielding, reloading, vertical mouselook, proper momentum that affects your melee, tranlucent surfaces, swimable water, underwater first person melee combat (which was clunky as hell, but still), varied objectives, great exploration, allied npc that can actually change between levels, mimics... kinda, different ammo types and different firing modes, rocket jumping and other movement tech

and all of this is wrapped in this 4th wall breaking abstract philosophical space opera that still somehow can make you emotional?

and all of this was at a time where most of our first-person shooting felt like this:

marathon 1 did some things better

it certainly had better atmosphere
and music (that is - it had music)

m1 was also a bit more abstract in it's concepts and it felt like it was kinda hostile
from level design, to audio, objectives, exploding bobs, terminals
it was hell bent on making you feel uneasy, a bit on edge

while 2 is just a fun rollercoaster like "yeah baby! durandal is back and this time it's personal!"

I've always dreamt of an idea for Hades 3 where it would start with 3 parallel routes (one at a time or maybe even multiplayer) taken by Zagreus Melinoe and Makaria, one each, converging into a final route taken by Hades himself. Probably a good thing I am studying to be an engineer and not a game designer though lol

It is SUPER JRPGy though. I can't even remember the last time I played a new game with an actual world map (like old FF games). The level design is like 1990-2010 JRPGs too. Feels like what ff16 should have been (though that game was also incredible) No way Square doesnt take some inspiration from the combat system, its like the old stuff but reinvented in an amazing and intuitive way unlike ff7r which was very divisive for good reasons (though decent I guess). 10/10 game so far 8 hours in

And of course its not a JRPG without 11/10 OST. Why are the soundtracks on these games always so good?

YES the soundtrack is really good! I like how JRPG-y it is lol, it's like modernization of JRPG with elements from shadow hearts/mario rpgs/persona/FF etc, combat so far is engaging and punchy.

It also fixed the problem of saving all of your elixirs to the end of the game. The healing is soulslike!!!! It just replenishes at checkpoints and you get limited. How did nobody figure out that this works in turn based games until now? Also it's only $45

first - i finally managed to s-rank all of OFB
for the first time since the game came out

what's OFB?
its out for blood - optional super-hard mode for rollerdrome
kinda like dante must die but with rollerskates

and second
i cannot believe how lucky i got at the end there

so the last level is a """regular""" arena (which you have to finish in a single combo and under a time limit while getting a crapton of points to s-rank) which ends in a bossfight

i had to retry that arena a few times but then when i got to the boss - i managed to get him on the first attempt BUT
