90% audiologs and crap

there's audiologs for everything
every interactible object in the world
every piece of a puzzle has a dedicated audiolog
every collectible is... an audio log
and there's one subset of audiologs that requires a rare and limited resource to play...
in special, dedicated spots on the map to which you have to sneak in

to the point that in episode 3 you get to use a 3d printer
and in episode 5 you can find a blueprint for a walkman that allows you to play some of those audiologs on the go

And I still cannot comprehend the design corner they painted themselves into

And that is - the camera and everything about it

Old GOW had the camera pulled out showing those nice cool shots and giving you a good look at the arena - you could easily see all enemies all around you

But now that we’ve got this closed in over the shoulder camera… for some reason - you can’t see enemies behind you

So now they had to make enemies slower to react when outside the camera
Make the kid shout like “dad behind you!”
And give you threat indicators around kratos
And probably some other things

It’s just a bit messy and old games avoided that just by… pulling the camera back a bit

It’s like they invented a problem and then came up with 5 clunky solutions for it

And all of it in the name of this seamless cinematic experience, but…
Even gow1 on ps2 was near seamless (minus some pre-rendered cutscenes)
So like… what?

With less hud too

well! the thing is active players are far richer than this and do all the group content that makes them money that i avoid bc im too anxious about playing any game ever with randos lol. it's a permanent access thing at any rate. permanent bank access (from anywhere, without having to travel to a bank spot) is like 6k gold if you get lucky to pull one and dont want to keep it. I don't really use the styling kits as it is so I didnt feel a need to keep something that gave permanent access to that when the gold is far more valuable to me

that is by zero measure even approaching failure especially for a VR game that wasn't even supposed to be a big profit maker on its own

most of us had to watch it on youtube

and im sorry, but waiting 13 years only to get a chance to watch a 6 hours long movie (along with like 80% of the fanbase) that ends in a retcon that resolves nothing doesn't really strike me as a successful game release, you know?

HLA might be the best game ever made

i just counted - 193 weapons (according to wiki)
if you exclude reskins, nades and crossperks that brings us down to around 140 weapons
with multiple skins, all animated at over 240 frames per second (for that sweet sweet slo-mo action) with multiple animation sets for every action and most of them are mocapped too
the amount of playable characters doubled since launch
the amount of music tripled since launch
and amount of maps quadrupled
not to mention other modes and skins and cosmetics and how we went from having one boss to five different bosses

and some other stuff
