I also feel like MD could fall into the category of hi-fi 3D games that show you a lot of cool set pieces but there's always just background. I haven't played it in a looooong time ofc but I sometimes get this feeling where games have a gorillion assets but all you do is run right past them. Doom Eternal felt a bit like that (extreme example) but like, think of BF3/4 campaigns (people do play them) - it's not like they have any art direction but I can't imagine 500 artists spending so many combined work-years to model the most generic uninteresting stuff ever

I think I get you, that's what I kinda meant in my previous message and something I've been thinking about for some time. Generally, I found myself to not quite care about all this auxilliary storytelling for some reason. If I got to that setpiece in MD where a bunch of monitors are arranged in an artistic way, I don't think of why it was done this way or possible symbolism. Maybe I was burned by too many games that didn#t put any effort in lmao

in human revolution it's the first two stages - anger and denial
from lots of empty whisky bottles and general mess to a broken mirror in the bathroom ||which was done both for storytelling and optimisation cause this way they didn't have to do reflections ||

in mankind divided it's the last two stages - depression and acceptance
everything is grey and dull, nothing is broken just slightly unkempt
the first thing you do there is take a sad shower (which serves no gameplay purpose - it's there just for extra flavor)
and after that you just... get to work
completely devoid of emotion, just going through the notions

it's really, really subtle

but once you know it's there and start looking for it it's like

it finally stopped lying to itself about being a full blown im-sim

the first bioshock is jank
but there isn't enough freedom in it to justify that jank imho

so infinite had to chose either a: more loosy-goosy approach that would allow more freedom in gameplay
or b: a tighter, more responsive but simpler gameplay loop

so they picked b and made... an actually pretty damn good shooter

the artstyle is great, skylines are awesome, characters are actually really well rounded || 🥬 my beloved || and it's got some really good pacing and some rather memorable moments

I like the game RiME which is very transparently just those five stages and while it greatly portrays them, it falls into the same trap of all the other media using those stages: they assume that those are logical steps that have to follow one after another so RiME doesn't even bother really explaining or connecting them. At first it's denial and then of course it's anger and then of course it's bargaining blah blah and it feels so stiff

That's why I think MD's portrayal would still work bc it doesn't depend on those five specific stages but uses and merges whatever makes sense for the character

ok so i gotta talk about something that will touch on a rather... sensitive subject

so i'm playing deus ex mankind divided, right?

deus ex has always been political - no surprise there
but MD's main questline pretends to be super smart a tries to weave in... segregation in there

the main gist is - at the end of previous game all augmented people went insane and started murdering everyone
and the sequel instead of writing itself out of this messy ending doubles down on it and compares it to... racism

which is a metaphor i could spend all day poking holes in ||(mainly because people aren't born with miniguns for their arms)|| but i wouldn't be the first

nah - what i wanna talk about is... level design
because despite the fact that this is a woefully misused and really clumsy metaphor, i gotta give them credit where credit is due - they tried to integrate it into gameplay itself in some interesting ways

like - you're constantly being bugged, stopped at checkpoints for law to check your papers
and there are separate lines to the metro - one for "naturals" and one for "augs" - and if you use the wrong one the game forces you to sit trough a boring, unskipable cutscene where a security guy gets on you for using the wrong line

they're really trying to get that clumsy point across

and that would be fine if it wasn't for the fact that...

and the game compares it to...
actual real life segregation

which - don't get me wrong
deus ex has always been political
probably the most political series out there
and old games used to mix that with some absurd conspiracy theories and honest to god grey aliens at area 51

it was a bit tongue in cheek and that worked

but this one takes this dumb idea and it just...
it does not work at all

i was thinking about this today, actually
and i realized that they could make this work if they just... toned it down a bit

if they could only stop comparing this whole situation to racism - cause it makes no freakin sense - and focus on other things happening
like the terrorist attacks led by an augmented group

that already puts people of prague on edge
just focus on that - that's a more reasonable angle for this conflict

drop this dumb "ghetto for rich people" idea cause it makes no sense either
if this was DE1 they would show those rich people as the only group that actually landed on their feet after the incident

it's like
like they had some really cool ideas there but then the marketing team cranked it up to 11 for their ridiculous marketing campaign and then there was no turning back so the game's script had to follow

and the worst part is - if you ignore this overarching plot and focus on smaller stuff
sidequests, environmental storytelling, dialogues, optional interactions
all that stuff is amazing

there's some stellar writing there
some real talent on display in those parts of the game

i didn't know what caused this bug at the time, but now that i'm thinking about it - i'm suspecting some kind of memory leak
some weird overflow

because here's what happened

so there's this mustache-twirling evil dictator dude there, right?
he's the main villain and his propaganda posters are all over the place

one time i was playing the game, i was doing some proper hours in it
and then the weirdest bug happened when i tried to enter a new city

i'm guessing that the game tried to load in a bunch of new textures for that city but some kind of overflow happened because instead of saving those textures in a designated place in memory it got one in some sort of buffer - probably a part of memory used for storing post processing stuff

because as soon as i entered that city, the game loaded the texture for one of those posters and BAM
plastered it all over my screen

this 128/128 square crap-eating grin stretched all over my 16/9 screen

it was like some cursed sonic.exe crap

a buddy run

so i just learned that apparently you can carry dead or unconcious enemies through loading screens

helicopter rides

and even the MJ12 detention setpiece

meaning - i could technically carry someone through the entire game

so i could kill someone on libarty island on hour one and carry them to area51 at hour 30

i already did a borderline legendary (in some small circles) Human Revolution Drunkthrough

basically - human revolution has some borked economy and item balance
but for some reason it has a weirldy robust selection of alcohol

so my challenge idea was this
i had to either pick up or use all alcohol i could find
i could heal only using alcohol
and if i ran out of space - i had to drop my weapons to make room for more alcohol in my gridventory
