a lot of demos available during steam's nextfest events tend to be limited for the duration of the event, or a little beyond that. timed demos are a lot more common these days than having demos at all, i've noticed.

first of all - i get that they're trying to prevent players from venturing out into the open world before finishing the tutorial
but i'm not going out there - i'm literally going back deeper into the tutorial zone

2 - the game hinted at something being there and i picked up on that hint

3 - yeah the weather is harsh, but i was just there not too long ago and we were all fine

it's not an iffy port

just as it was with gta5 - the technical side of this game shines
it's drop dead gorgeous and i'm doing locked 60fps at max settings

but then the design comes
and controls

and suddenly i have to walk up to my horse, hold LB to access horse inventory then wiggle the right stick to select the right item category THEN press RT to select a gun of that category AND THEN use the dpad to select the ammo type
all while holding LB

then watch an elaborate animation of arthur picking the thing up off the horse

and then once i get on the horse the weapon i picked gets stowed away so i have to do it all over again
but only if im on the horse longer than 60 seconds otherwise screw realism we're just gonna teleport that gun back to you

the aiming sucks
always did and always will

during gunfights i feel like...
like my mom does playing games, i think

and mission scripting just gives up the second you dare to do something outrageous like...
take a step back or think for 3 seconds before pulling a trigger

like - early on the game teaches you to hold A to match the speed of the npc you're riding with
neat

but do i have to steer or is my horse on an autopilot?
i still don't know and i feel like the game doesn't know either because 1 - no one told me
and 2 - sometimes it steers, sometimes it doesn't

and then it's stuff like
hold the left stick forward and then tap the A button twice and hold it to move up the formation

IM JUST GETTING STARTED

why can i fast walk in a camp but can't during combat?
the only place where i'd like to take it slow and smell the roses lets me walk fast but moments when bullets are flying inches above my head are apparently the perfect opportunity for a casual stroll

seriously - before i started playing this i thought all those vids on youtube of people walking slow and fanning revolvers was them just trying to look cool BUT NO!

you literally cannot walk fast during combat
you can either sprint like usian bolt or waddle around like my grandma doing groceries

so far the whole thing feels like this:

and speaking of sprinting
there's two speeds - you either hold A to run, or tap A to get the top speed at the expense of your stamina bar
and im fine with that idea - it's neat

BUT WHY DOES SPRINTING AT FULL TILT MULTIPLY THE SENSITIVITY OF MY LEFT STICK BY 2!?

the line between "normal" running with A and sprinting by tapping is really vague - especially with how smooth their animations are
so the best way to figure out where that line is to move the left stick slightly and see when artur starts doing 360

cause he goes from gently turning a corner to going

you wanna know how hunting works in this game?

there's a bit early on where you have to hunt a deer
you go with javier and once you reach a spot he stops and points out some footprints in the snow ||hoofprints?||

and then the game tells you to press L3 and R3 to enter special eagle eye hunting mode, then look at the prints in the snow, then aim slightly up and look at the magic whispy floating fart line above those prints, then you have to press RB to "lock on" this line, then exit the hunting mode and then the game will highlight those prints in normal mode for you to follow
for about two minutes before the magic hunting spirit bar depletes

or i could - you know
follow the goddamn prints in the snow
which i can see
with my eyes

those tutorials are also misleading too
there's a bit early on where you have to hike up the mountains and find john marston from rdr1
and you get attacked by wolves

and the game tells you to use LT to lock onto them and then press X to get their attention (somehow)
the thing is - i didn't realize this most expensive game ever made has messed up tutorials and apparently i had to count to 10 after reading this message and then do it

because when i did it it turned out those wolves were a bit too far and me pressing X meant arthur would do this clunky dive forward
like drunk max payne without slow motion

but since i pressed X the tutorial went away and i swear to god - i thought that's what they meant
i thought i had to "get their attention" by falling face first on the ground

so i was flopping around like until the friendly npc next to me got eaten by wolves

love the drunk shaky cam in the inventory too btw
really immersive

im gonna go play some more to find more crap to complain about

it feels like they're trying to simulate how people would feel in real life while shooting, thinking about lots of things at once, having hard time aiming

walking in snow is hard, pulling out guns is not instant, like in some kind of quake, where you can have ten of huge dakkas at once

i have found a perfect remedy to the illness that is RDR2

yesterday my buddy stopped by and we bought two copies of...
sniper elite 5

the fact that a game this good looking runs so well on the deck is mindblowing

just as 4 i played like a year ago - you can tune it any way you want
from a casual shooter to a borderline sim
and this time around sneaking is even better

and - and this is the most important thing - it also leans heavily into realism but still somehow figured out a reasonable control scheme that can be used by a normal person with just two hands

and the main character doesn't control like a drunk forklift with a cowboy hat!

suck it, rockstar

and the freedom this game gives you is such a breath of fresh air after this suffocating linearity of rdr2

rdr2 will almost randomly-generate a bullcrap reason to fail the mission if you so much as take two steps off the beaten path

meanwhile SE5 drops you into this magnum dong of a map and just goes "ok so yeah there's this one dude like 5 miles over there and he's still breathing and he has to... stop doing that i don't care how you do it just get it done. see you in 6 hours "

and then it's just 6 hours of constant, uninterrupted, tense, exciting, challenging gameplay

also - god damn this game is gorgeous
hands down the best looking 3d game on the steam deck i've played so far

and it runs at native resolution 60fps out of the box
i capped it down to 45fps at 95% resolution scale just to crank up some other graphical settings and it runs like a dream

with simulation this complex on maps this big it's almost a miracle this game runs at all
let alone at this kind of framerate

good job guys

oh and it has a cool co-op mode
which is a concept so wild rockstar still has trouble grapsing it

Some pretty good indie titles this year.

I have been meaning to get around to playing Neva, friend said it reminded them of Journey which is always nice.

I remember playing Journey right around release on PS3 long long ago, it was a very magical experience then.

I played it all in one sitting and with the same partner I met a level or two in. At the end we added each other (your identities are hidden till the end) and both gushed about how great that was as an experience.

Was incredible how much of a real sense of idk, camaraderie, you got by the end going up the mountain. How much it hit when your partner would nearly die or get knocked down, trying to stay warm by staying close, etc.

And then when I went back to 100%, it was really fun to run into white-cloaked people (meaning they had 100%) who just showed up and pointed out the harder collectibles or helped with things. They'd already 100%'d the game but were still having fun just being helpful.

I wish TGC would do another game like Flow, Flower and Journey. Sky was fun but the monetization kinda sours some aspects, though I get why a company would need to put it out to pay bills. Still it's been way too long since a full new game.

Flower was so damn cool back in the day...

the sheer girth in everything
it's got nice stealth, lot's of cool heists and objectives and almost infinite replay value

...but i like payday 1 more

it's got way better atmosphere and it's more focused
better for short sessions

like - payday 1 feels like a co-op campaign
while 2 is a full on life service game

and i think there was some language barrier there or something because he gets up and starts walking for the stage and it gets really awkward

so they cut to the wide shot to hide it, but in the distance you can see someone walking up to him and going like "oh no sorry"
and then cut to the audience shot and everyone's

but then that muppets bit was great
seriously - some of those zingers took balls to write
and a lot of self awareness

I decided to boot up Bloodborne again and…

God I forgot how bad this game runs

Also this controller is so small it feels like a toy

Start and select buttons are so small and hard to press

guys i've been playing for over an hour and i haven't made it out of hunters dream yet

so far i had to:
plug in my console, do a factory reset on that crappy controller cause it wouldn't connect for some reason, download the game off their slow ass servers (using an ethernet cable, mind you - a cheapo steam deck downloads a game 4 times as big faster over wi-fi), i got into the game, it chugs like crazy, turns out i'm playing offline cause i got logged off my psn account

and here's where the real madness begins

i wanted to log in using my phone

wrong password
alright, i'll just reset it
so i tried resetting it using my phone app, which took me out of the app into a separate site, it wouldn't let me click the "enter email" field and because of that i couldn't get my keyboard to show up to type in my email, and after i finally forced it to show up i typed in my email and got...

an unknown error

so i got to my pc, did a freaking detective work to even find where to reset that password, went through their convoluted process of doing so, saw their absurd requirements for a password (requirements so absurd i eventually used a bunch of swear words in this new password), did the reset
logged in on my app so i could log in on my console
and all of that just so i could see the freaking messages in a game!

AND IM PAYING FOR THIS CRAP!

what a joke

oh and in the middle of this it turned out i need to update my console to log in
which i couldn't cause all of the above

which would be fine if it wasn't for a fact it took forever (seriously - i managed to tidy up my whole partment while waiting for it to download an update, install it and reset this paperweight of a console)

and then i go to work and hear console guys going like "oh i don't wanna bother with a pc installing drivers and what not - consoles are easier cause it just works" and i'm like
