Weird question: Why is it that in every video game which features enemies with grab attacks, those grab attacks always feel like they have the worst hitboxes of any attack in the game? I'm pretty sure it can't be an engine issue since I've seen it in very different games that definitely don't use the same engine (the ones that come to mind first for me are Hades 2, Nine Sols, and everything Fromsoft has made and I've played. To my knowledge those first two have one grab attack each, and it's respectively one of the few and literally the only hitbox in the game that feels unfair. The possible explanations I've come up with are
- It intuitively makes sense that a grazing hit can hurt you, but a grab that doesn't go all the way around your body can't establish a hold, so giving a strike and a grab roughly equal sized hitboxes violates our intuition. This is less obvious when designing the attack than when playing against it.
- Because you've got a moment to process, you can say "hey wait a minute" where you'd just accept an equally unfair hit.
- Because grab attacks feel worse to get hit by, your brain is more likely to look for someone to blame
- Because grab attacks tend to be highly punishable, players get greedy and let themselves get hit.
- For any of several reasons, devs actually make grab hitboxes harsher than other hitboxes.
but I have no clue which of those hypotheses it is if not something else entirely.

i used to hate this game back when it released
thinking it was the final nail in the coffin of once great series
gone were luxurious cars and pretty scenery
this one was dirty, loud, obnoxious and full of teenage angst
but now?
i'm loving it
it's doing so many cool and clever things and it's just...
