and damn - it's a really good package

i think it's that uis used to be something you would imagine the player character in your game seeing, and thus being designed to fit the art style and world of the game, to something that is only for the player and thus has to disappear as much as possible

the second one is fine as long as you don't think about it, ie follow it's intended purpose. but once you do think about it, maybe because you're used to the first one, it's boring and samey

i dislike that kind of design since it became popular around Win8 and mobile.. with all that tiles and what not

it fulfills its purpose, but does nothing else. it doesn't bother or disrupt eyesight, in fact, it does nothing to eyesight at all

it's not pleasing

there are no sounds, the highlights are always too smooth to tell in an instance, if something was clicked or not

there was a time when i disliked glossy shiny win7 style since around 2007 in comparison to mat-ish WinXP kind of interface

but after a while it became pretty nice and fancy to the eyes and ears

but now they all melded into one goop that everyone calls just classic

i'm playing with remastered graphics but every now and then i switch to classic

the levels are exactly the same
the controls, the janky combat - everything

it's just a different set of assets and lighting

you can switch between them at any point just by pressing start

a timeless classic with 10/10 pacing that tells a really good, self contained story

you can knock it out in an evening or two

MGS2 is an... absolute fever dream that used to sound like ramblings of an institutionalised conspiracy theorist...

it doesn't anymore

and MGS3 is a super fun, cheesy adventure that takes a lot of inspirations from old sean con bond movies
minus the sexism

it has - in my opinion - the best mechanics

and an absolute tearjerker of an ending that thits you like a truck...
...filled with a ton of bricks

MGS4 is an absolute trainwreck

it's also the most beautiful, most satisfying trainwreck i've ever seen

the story, the lore, the... everything goes completely off the rails
all in the name of epic setpieces and fan service and it's glorious

and MGS5 is jsut an unfinished game...
...that feels even more unfinished since they split it into two

it looks great, runs great, plays great... in a vacuum
i just wish it had a proper story and some proper levels and missions

now - don't forget about older games and the prequels

but it also made me appreciate those old games in a brand new way

the oil rig part in tr2 is a bit boring

but venice levels? 10/10

most of tr1 is on that level too

there's no other game like that on the market currently

I was very late to the party but it‘s crazy how playable HL1 was - I really couldn‘t work with all the clunky parts of other games that old but hl worked perfectly

and now i'm replaying it again and it got me thinking

it's kinda sad how little games evolved since then

it even devolved in some aspects

i mean - hell - there have been AAA studios that were still trying to catch up to valve even a decade later

what struck me now the most on this current playthrough is...
pacing

the absolutely 10/10 pacing of the entire thing

now that i don't have as much free time to sink into games
and now that games require you to put more time than ever
i appreciate this tight structure of hl2 even more than ever
