this makes me extremely happy
its made by the ace attorney trilogy director btw!!!
its their magnum opus imo
wow i thought it would have way more reviews
i cant buy it rn but i wish i could, i wanted to play it for a looong time
ghost trick good
Looking for a JRPG that i can spend endless hours on don't be too obvious
But obviously something to hold me off til Hades 2
Trails in the sky
Is it for ps4?
No...pc
Dang
It really is countless hours though
on ps4 there are trails of cold steel, and there are 4 parts
each part its own game, so it is super long
havent played them myself
I'll take a look
friends who are fans of trails series didnt like cold steel
well thats just them. doesnt mean you wont like it
Nvm i have enough games actually
I wish I had 11 euros to get battlebit
MGS5: The Phantom Plot
and on the topic of mgs5
- cough *

SCREW THE MOUNTAIN RELAY BASE! 📣
thank you for coming to my ted talk
Thank you!
Thanks, I've played of bit of Cadence of Hyrule, and I wasn't all that impressed. But thank you for the recommendation.
you know
i think...
i think i just figured the biggest issue with mgs5
its fatal flaw andd how to explain it with a simple question
@ocean iris
mate
tell me
why do you have to sneak in this game anyway?
what's all this stealth crap for?
It's just there as an option for stealth enjoyers clearly
and that is my point exactly
it gives you so many tools for stealth, and yet...
all of that is utterly pointless
so most players will usually play each mission three times, right?
once for that initial run, second time for all the extra objectives and third one for the S rank
but...
S stands for Speed and not Stealth - so you're always better off with spawning with a jeep and just
your way to the objective
those optional objectives (each mission has around 5 of them) can be usually achieved by just going in guns blazing
and that first run... well - it's a first run
who cares if you mess it up - your next run will override your crappy score
so it's a stealth game that doesn't want you to... be stealthy
it's like a doom game that doesn't want you to shoot demons
I only play each mission once: the scavenging run
i liked getting the perfect stealth thing on the result screen
the stealth toys are fun to play around with too
decoys are so funny
oh yeah
i have to admit - they did a stellar job with those decoys
at first i was like "oh that's dumb - who would get fooled by a blow up doll like that?"
until i...
literally bumped into one during a sandstorm
i was swearing at d-doggo for not marking that dude until i realized...
he didn't sound the alarm...
and he's just standing there...
and he looks like he comes from a dreamcast game...
god damn it
oh yeah - this reminds me
today i bumped into a guard that just... fultoned himself
i have no idea what's that all about
never heard of that one lol
yeah i was doing that sideop "rescue this totally super important prisoner no. 17" at that god forsaken moutain relay base
i was making my way up the scafolding and one dude saw me
but with a ? so he came to investigate instead of sounding the alarm
i jumped out to CQC him but but went a bit too fast and bumped into him and he just...
grew a fulton out of his butt and went up
and miller went all like "good job, boss!" and then... that's it
AND THAT WASN'T EVEN THE TARGET OF THIS SIDEOP
who tf was that?
i am... so confused
lmao what
could it be "wandering motherbase soldier"
oh yeah that could be it
the many ways you can deal with wandering guys is a nice touch
like, if they see you they run away really fast
but if they see you walking around...wearing a box
hehe
for me it has a completely opposite effect
instead of going like "wow... look how many ways i can interact with this guy!
"
i'm more like "Wow... look what tf is even going on
"
the first time i found one of those MSF guys he spotted me THROUGH A ROCK
SOLID MAP GEO
and skipped the "oh this looks sus" phase and went straight into alert
and then proceeded to book it...
...at twice the speed
even his running animation played at double speed
so that was the first guy
the second MSF guy spawned in a place he's not supposed to be in
wearing a skin he's not supposed to be wearing
running AI routines he's not supposed to be using
and then he just grew a fulton out of his ass and pinged off to outer space
at this rate i'm scared to think what help the MSF dude #3 will have to offer
forrest gump was kinda right
this game is like a box of chocolate
makes my blood sugar spike
also you never know what you're gonna find
remembered how cool sifu is
finally bought it on steam i hope they do another game like it
I love ievan polkka
Tried iconoclasts, very cute but the movement is just too clunky
nuh uh
Not enough gameplay engagement for me
Best purchases so far? Steam sale
not satisfied
only 3 payday 2 dlcs
and im already pissed cause i aint level 100 yet
waiting to see if i can get battlebit
there's a sale?
okay, should check something
tried Riftbreaker recently.. help
it's too engaging
i was expecting something factorio-ish, some kind of factory management
and i got starcraft
gathering more minerals, constructing additional pylons, getting chomped by local fauna
i'll say, the source of devs' inspiration is pretty clear
the main difference is that you're in control of single unit
lmao I crashed pikmin 1 by error
triggered the blue pikmin cutscene at the same time a ship part reached the base, and so when it came back to the pikmin cutscene it was straight up gone
game froze and crash goes the game
Finally bought project diva DLC. Not because it's worth it, but for some reason one of the biggest mod for the game requires the DLC. I did spend time with the DLC as is. Not worth

this is big
really goddamn big

thank you danny
I can’t wait till they dig up some old ion storm stuff
I would love to see old deus ex press releases cause…
The stuff you can find on YouTube is barely even readable
So hot, this whole building is melting
Kid Icarus: Uprising was a jam-packed third-person shooter released early on in the 3DS's life cycle. In this video, I'll be introducing the concepts behind its creation.
Personally speaking... I'm really glad we were able to make this game.
Basically hades if it was a 3D shooter
Love this game
Kid icarus my beloved
KOJIPRO AT TOKYO GAME SHOW IN SEPTEMBER
damn riftbreaker looks very good visually
Riftbreaker is very fun
If anyone is on the lookout for more rogue-likes, Oblivion Override is quite good
It's like a weird sci-fi cross between Dead Cells map generation/exploration and Hades weapon and talent systems
The weird thing they did is that you get to fight different bosses after going through the same biomes
Im genuinely shocked how violent MK1 is god damn
To the point of actual real life gore wtf are those fatalities
Welcome to Mortal Kombat
hey now fatalities used to be goofy violent not cartel video violent
yeah so like there were news stories about mk 11 a few years back and how some devs were actually traumatized during the development of that game bc of the real life material they had to research and reference for the gore and like at least one was diagnosed with ptsd iirc
personally i do not think we should sacrifice the health of game devs for the sake of hyper realism but thats me
the gore in mk1 isn't even interesting
it works best when it's quick and sorta silly, but modern mk gore goes on for sooo long that it loses any impact and just becomes edgelord material
doom glory kills are perfect because they're only a few seconds long and are usually funny, mk fatalities just take forever to get it over with
okay i modded fallout 4 now it looks like oblivion and radiation is everywhere and gotta wear gas masks like in metro
bideo gaems
Friends I just really wanted to share
Ya boy got a new PC :3
5 years difference.
I'm going from 1080p 60hz to 1440p 144hz.
Hades legit ran at 600fps constantly on 1440p lol.
GPU got bigger but MOBO got smaller!
tfw
graphic card is literally bigger than motherboard
something tells me we're all gonna have new case formfactor pretty soon
Oh yeah by a large margin. I wish I took a pic cause it looks comical.
You can see how large the GPU is, don't mind the duck taped HDD lmao.
And it's not even as large as the largest gen one.
lookin good tho
oh so you can finally play doom @polar dragon
I have been playing W40k Boltgun!
mine first games on any machine would be HoMM3, Sonic Adventure DX, Terraria, Skyrim, GTAV and the whatever i bought new system for
in that order
It's pretty satisfying. Though the level maze is annoying. It's so fun to shoot things, not so much when you have to backtrack...
Oh yeah I did try XCOM to test the frame rates!
speaking of, looking at modern sizes of hardware, i imagined WH marine in a cart
how many frames do you need in a turns based game?
i mean - in theory you need 1 FPT
frame per turn
Honestly now I don't remember, have to test it again. I want triple digit frames on 1440p or it's not playable.
god i wish that was me
but the smooooothest cursor movement
would be nice, right?
Hi Tatz! What's up? Your computer is failing you?
bro I've have my pc since 2015 it's a wonder i can run anything lol
Can't make tactical decisions if the frames aren't smooth.
can you fire your shotgun at 35 FPS?
ohh nice fox enjoy the new pc
Oh damn haha. Buy used, save money, and the environment (kinda).
well, yeah, run the game and enjoy the game are not always the same thing
i've tried NMS a week ago, and it agreed to launch only after putting all the graphene options at minimum
it looks.. okay, but there's no awe in the picture
The irony that turn based games are usually easier to run at high frames while action ones aren't.
Tfw Dark Tide is "only" at 90 ish fps for me.
less than 30 fps also don't help
Human eyes can't distinguish higher than 24fps
yep
well my beloved's brain runs at 35 ticks per second
35 specifically huh
it's doom
it's logic ticks 35 times per second and can't go any faster
I get 30hz but why 35, like who chose that number
which one - is a god awful number to work with
30 would've been better
40 would've been better
45 would've been better
60 would've been perfect
35 drives me up the wall
Lmao
and two...
i've been working on making this sort of glass...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRo9DGpUEKQ&ab_channel=3kliksphilip
in doom
so yeah - this crap is gonna be a real benchmark for your new rig
it's something between this and the glass from HL2 where it doesn't break right away but it just cracks and then you can shoot small bits out
Almost 25 years of technology so we can break some digital glass.
actually - valve has this... weird obsession with breaking glass
each one of their major releases does it in a completely new and really pretty way
valve releases things? 🤨 sounds fake
Steam, Valve releases Steam
in HL1 - you shoot glass and it breaks into simple triangles that bounce using that generic bouncy physics script and that's all
in HL2 they have this cool glass that cracks and you can shoot chunks out of it before it falls apart and it has some cool gameplay uses
in portal they had some really pretty looking shaders
in portal 2 it breaks and splits into those big razor-sharp pieces in this cool way
then in HLA each one of those pieces is a tangible physics object that's still stuck in the frame and you can pry it and pull it out and stab someone with it
and now there's CS2 which is like... all of the above combined
they have a thing for glass
DUDE HAVE YOU SEEN THAT NEW FANCY SMOKE!?
it's such a simple concept and it doesn't seem that taxing on the hardware but boi - i'm shocked no one else used it in such a way
despite volumetric fog being a thing since... unreal engine 1, actually
Yeah I've seen the trailer
fun fact - the first deus ex has proper volumetric fog
despite really simple graphics - even for the time - that fog plays really well with modern raytracing solutions with a right plugin
it behaves almost like any other modern volumetric fog tech
it's kinda neat
and speaking of old tech that still has uses in games
i've been trying to adapt some existing scripts to display proper lens flares in doom and it...
works? kinda?
but it falls apart if you change your resolution or display ratio or switch to windowed mode or switch your FOV or look at it at a weird angle...
...so it actually doesn't work at all
just use og CRT monitors smh
yo i would love to have that absolute CHUNGUS of a crt carmack had in the nineties
like - i would use it today
28 inch, proper 16:9 ratio (so it would work well with everything released nowadays) CRT goodness

that thing probably costed a fortune back in the day
apparently it went for around 5 grand back in the day
prolly it still does
adjust it for inflation
then multiply it by 3
reminds me of that episode of DF retro where they ran control on a CRT
god
why did we stop making CRTs?
sure they're big
they're lethal
and they're a danger to society, small children and elderly
but they look just so damn good and have almost no input lag
flatscreen panels have been playing catchup for TWO DECADES and some may argue they're still lagging behind in the low to mid-tier segments
(and tv is a danger to society as it is)
surely there has to be a company out there that's still making CRTs, right?
After buying a CRT monitor for his retro PC, John started to play modern PC games on it... and things escalated from there, culminating in Rich purchasing the classic Sony FW900 - which some say is the best CRT for gaming of all-time. The bottom line here is that modern games look stunning on CRT monitors and we're going to try our best to tell ...
look at it
look it!

at least im sure some companies make repairs
for people who can't afford new tv since 90s
repairs
they're keeping the small amount of still living CRTs on life support
i want new stuff
and also, old pixel games were made specifically for running on CRTs
and looked much much better on them
i just want a large lad monitor
a big boy
generous gentleman
enormous, energy-consuming electronic display device
oh yeah
just...
just make me a CRT monitor with HDMI and display port
how hard can it be?
considering there are enough video converters, one of which we're using here rn to watch movies from the external drive
i think it's easy
easy comparing to make fullhd crt that is
my first monitor is still alive btw
it was brought to the suburban house of my aunt to serve as a color tv to replace b/w one
I WANT A BIG RADIOACTIVE TOOB ON MY DESK!
" IT'S A TOOB, INNIT!? "
just make me a toob with HDMI and display port that can read HDR content
or i will take decisive action
Curse of the Dead Gods a good game like Hades?
shoutout to the person on the rain world server who just
bought me hollow knight on steam???
thats so nice im crying
gonna get outerwilds too
wow
as in im buying this one
Having tried it, yeah. It is kinda similar in the gameplay loop (I would even argue it's more in depth and complex), build diversity is not as varied as Hades though (not that Hades build diversity is that high in term of roguelites), and definitely lackluster in the story department. Still, would recommend if you enjoy the essence of Hades combat.
just ran a few mission in the Legacy Archive at max setting 1440p in XCOM2, getting at least 120+ frames, usually in the 140-150s, I don't have the fps tracking software installed so whatever lul, eyeballing is good enough. It's smooth ❤️
it was fine
Thanks for the feedback I am torn between Transistor and Curse of the Gods.
I have conquered an entire zone https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/870680987208667187/1126441458203889754/Screenshot_588.png?width=1247&height=701
took me like idk how much but a lot
and since enemies only spawn from borders I just build a wall with rocket turrets
and every available resource is being gathered
oh goodness
I've also found plantations to be quite effective for gathering rare crafting resources
I got 20k tanzanite without gathering it on the tanzanite mission
also plantations are endlessly sustainable, require less energy, and are pretty
I gotta test how much resources they give exactly
literally all of my income except uranium and a tiny bit of hazenite is from this zone https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/870680987208667187/1126456729366958161/Screenshot_589.png?width=1247&height=701
What game is this anyways?
Riftbreaker
I may be in trouble
my mun mission is going to reach the mun before the relay sattelites

Kemoverse for me is a kemono/furry social sand...
needs more mods, that is clearly not a rubber chicken
with a pully in the middle?
let them eat cake
Disregarding my critics of MK1's fatalities
I think MK1's Johnny Cage is the best itteration of him
It's just so on point
Though it took like 11 games or so to do that lmao
its not videogames so much but this looks really cool: https://pieartsy.itch.io/after-the-mind
damn this armor looks kinda hot
🥺
Yeah I love mods
I love power armor and cyborgs
this needs cloak
i think
so many really nice looking usual and power armor
where should i even have time to wear all that?
true
personally i hate using power armor
idk why
i always keep it for special occasions
but never do it
hehe
i guess i did it on important missions
oh and it breaks aiming with more sophisticated scopes
kinda same.. i wear it on special occasions, which is every big mission
without modified power cores you just feel crippled in it
"quick, get to the other camp before i ran out of power, then raid another station in nearest city to get another core, or kill a big robot.. oh well, dropped nothing"
i mean come on
they worked for two centuries, how hard would it be to run for several weeks in field, like they're supposed to
not god damn 10 minutes of walking
try some warfare mods
war of the commonwealth has some spawn levels
and damn
they are insane
running around without power armor feels so dangerous
especially with the gas mask mod and how easily it breaks and exposes you to radiation
two months of preparing mods
one week of playing
yep, that's me
same as with skyrim
best way to play is without dust storm frequent weather, gas mask damage for you and npc's. 10 min filters
also you cant repair masks in combat
soooo
so you can't yolo in the crowd and V.A.T.S. away your way to the victory
i guess
and it's nice
i mean
i just stopped using vats
its way more fun to approach it more tactically
with an AK
also no hud
or minimal hud at least
Official Discord server is on the itch.io page as well.

way, WAY better than ds3
ok i'm gonna need some beeg brain 200 iq answers
how in the hell does a ps5 game streamed remotely have LESS INPUT LAG than DS3 running natively on a ps4?

i mean - sure
i shouldn't be making confused unga bunga noises - i know how that happened
they just... really screwed the pooch with the ps4 release of dark souls 3
i'd go as far as saying... it's less playable than the first pc port of ds1...
WITHOUT dsfix
i just... still can't get over this
anyways - playstation's remote play actually works really well
if you've got a friend who's got a ps5 you can remotely connect to their console and enjoy this 😗👌 wonderful game
it's not like they have any other ps5 games to play anyway
we'll have to gather all our friends and ask for thier friends to ask for their friends if they have or know somebody with PS5
and then the whole band will get in the line so they will allow to play remotely while they're at work or sleeping
maybe for a price of electricity spent
or higher.. fresh startup, you know
Well yeah ok
I get what you mean
BUT
But…
If you somehow get a chance…
Dew it
The game is totally worth it
Demon Souls is definedly worth it
Remote play works well if you want to stream the game in discord. Although, having second psn account connected to remote play app in PC and then switching to your actual account means no lag or other bs.
Iunno
I’m beaming it straight to a ps4 and it runs just fine
But yeah
I’m McLoving it so far

How far are you in the game?
just killed the spooder a while back and did a huge loop around the mines
i'm... kinda lost on where to go next bu i'll figure it out
played it for just 7 hours so i still have a long way to go

It’s time
Also
Look at my souls

Nice
OH MY GOD THEY DONT SHOW THE BUILDUP IN THIS ONE!

AND I CANT ROLL EITHER!?
Oh this is gonna suck

i've heard of rating a note 'fine' but never rating it 'FOUL'
what other important knowledge have i missed
Oh yeah it’s been a thing in most souls games
Shame that messages here give you…
Nothing, really
And the whole system is a bit… lackluster
The game has a lot of templates but won’t let you use all words with all templates
So you can’t really write mean or funny messages
You can’t tell patches to Try: woman
You can’t walk up to a knee-high ledge and write Good luck, dwarf!
Ds2 and 3 have some of the meanest messages out there
And people don’t call each other skeletons anymore
Which is just… sad
i'm pretty sure rolling in a Miyazaki's favorite biome will make it even worse.. regarding walking speed/buildup speed
Nah nah nah
at least, it definitely is so in Eldenring
I’ve been rolling though blighttown for years now and I’m fine
But here?
Yeah imma need some help

I played some Ds1 a few days ago and when I got to that swamp I was rolling harder than snoopdog on April 20th
It works in ds1
But here?
It stops you in place and plays that “oh no I’m stuck” animation
well.. i wonder if they left the essential mechanics as they were in original.. more flawed than in later games
Oh yeah
would make sense
Mechanics-wise this remake is so faithful they even kept old bugs and exploits
Shame about that art style though
The game itself is just… drop dead gorgeous
But it’s missing that old, desolate fromsoft smell, you know?
i think i understand
AAAAAAAA
I hate this goddamn swamp
i'm gonna download tinder and ask the first person that pops up to send dudes
don't you mean nudes?
IM IN THE GODDAMN VALLEY OF DEFILEMENT I NEED HELP!

seriously though
blighttown ||my beloved|| is a cakewalk when compared to the valley
you know what i really like about demons souls so far?
i haven't seen a single wheel skeleton yet
Noctua fans have to be one of the best purchases I made recently
the thing is whisper quiet and my ears thank God and the engineers at Noctua for that.
Made it

And I got the colossus on the first try
Wasn’t even that hard
Those regular big boys were harder
Time to KMS in the nexus!

WAIT THERES MORE!?
Oh so it’s just the astrea fight
That was…
Amazing!
This entire zone was just
Probably one of my fave zones in the entire series
if this game keeps up this pace it might just end up being my fave souls game
and that's the highest praise i can give to it
i've got... really high hopes for the latter half
Which dank souls is this?
DeS
anybody got a fun idea for a dead cells challenge
A no fragments run
I already do that
it's demon's soles
Most useless thing in videogames is consumables
I'm always afraid to run out of them so I never use them
I feel like there's ways to combat that mindset but I can't think of any examples
Specific examples, I mean
Oh actually, Tunic did a good job of it
just reminded me that if you use ur healing/stamina items in vampyr and then die the items are still gone
also makes u not want to use them
In Tunic, you have bombs and other consumable combat items, and when you use them frequently you start getting what amounts to charges of them that refresh when you die
i want to believe its an unintentional product of the autosave system, but also. it sucks and was never fixed afaik
So they start working like Estus instead of being strictly pickups
Tunic is great I just wish it wasn't trying to Dark Souls
Slash was better at doing a Dark Souls
The key is to force you to use them several times. Have an enemy that's too fast and you need to use a speed potion, or someone who gains damage resist for how much mana you have.
In riftbreaker grenades and mines and turrets and etc have limited charges that regenerate quickly
So they're more like skills in some games
I use them freely unafraid
Like, folks still use guns in ammo-low games like metro and deus ex
Because not using it is hard.
Hm
It's a tough nut to crack and get right, for sure
I think I still prefer gaining charges instead of proper consumables so you don't feel like they're being wasted
Good example, estus flasks are great, blood vials are terrible
Entirely hinged on the fact that flasks come back and vials don't
Seeing some people strategize their items use in paper mario is cool ngl
Not necessarily that it's hard without them but it's significantly easier with them, it sounds weird but it makes sense in my head I swear, like most consumables in game are not actually useful, most of the time they're either clunky to use like grenades or like some potion type things give a small stat boost
The only time I saw grenades being good is borderlands
While guns are very much useful in metro
Also you don't really run out of ammo if you just like, aim
Although I did play on low difficulty so idk
The only time I've enjoyed things like grenades in RPGs are Riku's stuff in FFX and the elemental items in Mega Man X: Command Mission
The second one you need them to have the elemental coverage for certain things
the hard part about consumables is you have to know when to spend them and when you can do without
so you try to approach a combat without consumables first to see if it'll be too hard without them, and eventually it turns out it's easy enough
to the point when you start to save the ultimate healing potions and boosts for The Last Boss.. and then beat it without using any
i think there should be more parts in games where you have to use consumable items
like in Metroid games, when you have to spend rockets for opening red doors, etc
that will lead to some resource management
if you need them to open doors then people will def be afraid to use in battles even more
it's not a problem if such resources will be easy to get
and if some enemies will have resistance to normal attacks
example.. Elden ring where most resources you need are always in stock or grow underneath your feet
but let's be honest.. how many people are using crafting system?
i can only think of speedrunners who absolutely have to start some fights with bunch of bombs to burn the boss
Missiles drop in most metroid like everywhere
And if you explore a bit you get way too many missile expeansions
Metroid fusion is hikarious tho
You get power bombs whivh are a screen wipe and in most games you have like at max 10-20
Here you can get like 50+
haven't played metroid but if rockets open doors I definetly would be like well I have 100 rockets, meaning if I use one rocket in combat I could only open 99 doors, and I can't have that
^literally me gathering throwables in Starbound
my common sense be like: why in the world do you need them, you don't even use them
me: but what if they'll come in handy
common sense: ...dude, they are even selled for 0 pixels
Part of the problem with consumables in games too is that if you end up using them and then losing the battle/encounter or whatever, then you feel like you just wasted them for no gain. Dark Souls for example, I would never use the green moss item that increased stamina regen because if I died, I wasted it. Real feelsbadman moment
I mean that's not an issue of consumables inherently, just in games that don't give you actual save/load when you die
humanity/ember/rune etc are the ultimate example of that
part of the reason I don't like/play fromsoft games
also the way you gather consumables matter
they can be dropped from mobs (low value), bought for a low price at vendors, crafted (never bothered to acquire unless necessary), gathered in the world with or without respawn, gifted as a loot or reward (high value), etc
honestly?
souls is the only series where i actually don't suffer from the item hoarding
because it pretty much does not allow it with the style of gameplay it has
in all the other games i'm all like "oh i won't use this item - i might need it later"
and then the credits roll and i end up with like 10 uber heal items and all the other stuff
but in souls when i end up fighting a difficult boss and i get it 👌 this close - i go for that item and use it
because it feels like it would give me enough edge to beat that boss
consumable buffs in souls games are for those really, really rare occasions
I dislike the consumables of castlevania SOTN purely of how annoying they are to use
i should continue elden ring which is the first soulslike that called to me to play but then i remembered i hate huge open worlds and its, like, hard
if consumables respawned i could just...
grind 50 pine resins and dunk on everyone
which is still the case, more or less
you can get a lot of those resources back
I've got so much open world fatigue rn. Every one of my friends lauds Elden Ring and I played it for like 3 hours and just couldn't do it
may i recommend demons souls if you're new to the series
it's the shortest one
and the easiest one...
...but it's also a bit jank
oh yeah and btw - since im playing souls again instead of MGS5
i should change my name
open world games i like and finish are few and far between
there we go
Probably gonna wrap up ghosts of tsushima and then not play another "open world crafting" type game again for a while
god
those words
"open world crafting"
are like...
like garlic to a vampire
or a cross
make me go hisss

minecraft my beloved
minecraft - sure
first and last game of that genre that was enjoyed
but whenever i see those words my mind goes to this bland "videogame: the game: remastered" type of game
open world, waist-high grass for basic, binary stealth, crafting, basic rarity system, obligatory XPs and leveling up, bows, white lines and blurry backgrounds UI and a simple yet pointlessly melodramatic story with more holes than current copyright laws
bonus points if it has Troy Baker on the cast and is published by sony
you know what i mean?
scrolling through the open world tag in my library, heres the ones i liked:
aer memories of old, disco elysium, nier games, pathologic, prey, a short hike, submerged games
i mean
calling panic at the disco: elysium an "open world" game is a bit of a stretch
also
prey?
it's "open world" in the same way bioshock 1 and 2 are open world
and system shocks
also there's the fact that the games you listed are actually... good
i mean, if the map of the world is not the halflife1ish narrow corridor without options to turn left or right, it's not enough to be called openworld game
procedural generation!! Survival!!
SIXTEEN TIMES THE DETAIL
oh my.
im trying to enjoy NMS, but
it feels like i was just given 3d starbound without mods
maybe i would enjoy the picture, but this bucket of micro transistors can only run it on lowest settings
that's what open world is
go whenever you like
you'll find the same things
bonus points for map exploration
towers
and collectibles
Technically it is lol
Also bioshock games are super linear right
hell no
With prey you have free rein to explore the entire station almost from the beginning
not considering the fact that comparing prey to bioshock hurts me LOL
Prey actually have some elements of metroidvania
you can walk from almost the end of the game all the way back to the start
and back again
sure it has loading screens, but still
you technically can go whenever you want, but first you have to get something to pass through certain barriers
i mean.. if we're talking 2017 Prey
oh christ we're talking genre names and conventions again
MGS3 is an immersive sim
i hope foxhope doesn't pop in with all that rogueLITE crap
Goodbye
no it's not
bue
:trol
Prey has a pretty closed space cluttered with junk useful items, junk enemies, valuable things, junk, weapons and ammo, junk, and most importantly - story and lore
also, lots of junk
and then there's Zelda or Eldenring
you're in a field
This is why I said closed and contains open world, not everything has to take 500 hours to finish
ubisoft begs to differ
but anyway, hold the presses
https://www.siliconera.com/wayforward-releasing-clock-tower-remaster-worldwide/
Clock tower remaster
finally some hopes
open world is just "non linear explorable area"
no it's not
they are two different things
open world is just a big ass field with a buncha crap copy-pasted all over
dawg i am not arguing against the english language
MGS1 and 2 aren't open world, for example
even if you can get from the end of the game to the start... for some reason
BUT I AM
disco elysium is an open world by their own description

i think there should be some disambiguations
if you wanna go that route it's also an interactive communist manifesto
yes!
going by what the devs said during the VGAs
its an open area
you can explore as much or as little of it as you want
not really debatable
well, Eldenring is not from ubisoft
cause every level is an open area
which you can explore as much or as little as you want
but uses semisimilar formula
that is patently false
its a linear level
but it fits what you just said
why do my fingers keep typing "fromula"
cause it's from by software
apologies i should have been more pedantic
i mean - made by from software
that one's on me i guess
whatever
i don't have enough beer to go through this crap again
and i bought a 6 pack today

is DS1 an open world game? yes
is NMS an open world game? also yes
is it the same thing? no
^
its toeing the line I think
its more like a metroidvania
it is
semi open world
metroidvanias and games with elements of it are good example of open worlds that are not filled with copypasta
it has interconnected zones - sure
and you can go back and forth between them - sure
but they're still clearly separated AND they're not springled around a big empty open field
it's not an "open world" game
yes
elden ring on the other hand - is
that is not necessary to be an open world
it does have distinct zones
but they're sprinkled around a big ass open map with a lot of dead space in between
yakuza games are open world despite being one city rather than a field
ergo - open world
metroidvanias aren't open world games
gta games are open world and they're also a city
but, open world (for whatever reasons) means "you can go different ways", and it applies to DS1. you can go to undeadburg, or use lockpick to get to dragons'valley or Omsk Plague town, or even go to catacombs if you're bold enough
two things can be true
to make that clear distinction
that does not make the game open world
no - the problem is with people using a genre name because it slightly resambles it even if all the other elements are more prominent
you are hung up on the ubisoft formula instead of recognizing that the term "open world" just means "nonlinear open ended game"
it would be kinda like calling NIN "classical music" because i think i've heard violins in like... two tracks
it's not
well.. considering the age and impact on the industry..
ok then - lets talk rockstar
nah
give it 10 more years, then it'll hit classic rock stations
rockstar games have big open fields, but they are cluttered with stuff
ubi formula is not applied here
if "open world" really just means a "nonlinear open ended game" then by this definition MGS2 is open world cause you can go to strut A or B or freaking XYZ whenever you want
then again, if such games had more time, money and whips from management to achieve rockstar quality, they could do the same
slight sidenote
at this point i actually wish rockstar games were as cluttered as ubisoft games
at least then there would be something to freaking do instead of doing a... yoga minigame or whatever
example of overachieving
i haven't gotten to playing metal gear yet so i'll take your word for it
you know what?
old MGS games aren't open world
bug MGS5 is
you wanna know how i figured that conondrum out?
it's because 80% of the playable space in MGS5 is absolutely wasted on all 50 shades of nothing
truly
a mark of a proper open world game
the original legend of zelda is open world
oh my god
why do we even have genre names anyway?
at this point every game is open world, right?
open world isn't a genre
that's not a take its an objective fact
massive, sprawling, living and breathing open world cake with a buncha crap sprinkled on top willy nilly
I wouldn't put elden ring, far cry, and yakuza in the same genre
I don't think even you would do that
there are levels of open world, for me at least
a) non-linear world with branches
b) closed world for exploration, with metroidvania and/or immersive sim elements
c) big world with interconnected areas, with or without metroidvania elements, or opened as the story progresses
d) big world filled with handcrafted stuff, with story-filled areas and crafting elements
e) huge world, mostly empty, with copypasted areas with minimum story value, with accent on crafting, probably with elements of survival
g) unlimited world with procedurally generated areas and copypasted points of interest, with simplest story, crafting and survival
^^
of course i can
hell - i could even do it with a picture that's the most emblematic of this Genre
the Ubisoft formula is just a type of open world
the map
google "elden ring map"
and then google "far cry 4 map"
and then go back here and tell me you don't see the similarities that are characteristic to open world games
no
both of those games have their content spread out across a massive map with lots of dead space in between
THAT is the main shtick of open world games
all of tem
that is their focus
don't you guys have mounts smh my head
and with that in mind - metroidvanias aren't open world
their zones are connected in just a few precise spots
same with dark souls games
now, i have to point out a thing
in elden ring areas are not accessible from one to another from anywhere, there are certain points where one have to travel first
areas are huge - sure
and also some are not accessible instantly without some key events or items
which..
yeah they are surrounded by walls or cliffs and what not
and you can enter them via gates or bridges
sure
just makes it worse
cause it's not a one open world, it's a bunch of open worlds
in one game
but you can still hop on your horse and go around them using the open world
and there's still a lot of empty space between them filled with nothing but grass and maybe some pointless crap sprinkled in
and copypasted stuff
it's kinda like pointing out that in GTA you can only walk into a building from a certain point
yes - that is indeed how doors work
which hurts, considering that it's not what i likeMiyazaki's games for
its been a minute since I played elden ring but I don't recall there being that much empty space
won't deny the copy pasted bosses though
not even bosses, just locations
dragons or that cerberus cat things i don't consider much like bosses, just strong enemies with hp bar below
it actually makes sense for them to be copies of each other, since they're not one of a kind each
bosses are somebody like that.. dude with hands, or moon magic academy principal lady, and others
well, still
i mean, the whole Raya Lucaria location feels almost as big as whole swamps, despite being a small part of it
and even bigger, considering filling with points and items of interest
guys
tell me
that's where Miyazaki's spirit holds true
is demon's souls open world?
idk its not on pc
no idea
i think elden ring only really drops in the quality of its explorable area after margit
couldn't tell you a thing i found in mountaintops of the giants
DS1 is a metroidvania
primary definition
we're getting there
it has open world, but it's not an open world genre
very good
B+
tomorrow we're gonna learn about roguelikes and roguelites
i'm off to bed
bb
is not an open world game
speaking of, maybe i should plug my ps4 to a big screen we got just today
or on the second thought.. my relatives wouldn't understand me
it's a semi open world
it's not an Ubisoft open world
open world isn't a genre because you can't describe the actual gameplay with it
if I'm describing the genre of say, devil may cry I don't just say "it has levels"
I seem to have opened up the pandoras box of open world discussion. Let me just say that I think y'all have made some excellent points about open world games and while it's obviously hard to define what makes a game "open world" we can all agree that some (or most) of them are really meh
I think this is a pretty good description of this type of game and I will absolutely be stealing it
europa universalis is open world game
I LOVE FIXED 8 DIRECTION AXIS ON ANALOG STICKS IN FIGHTING GAMES
My bro walked into the room

I will take a picture of my profile in a bit, I like it
wow pretty close to all geometry dash achievements
I should probably try to get the rest sometime
The ones that are left are mostly tedious not hard
The only hard ones that are left are the ones for completing 30 and 40 demons and getting 100 likes on a level
Although the demon one is also mostly tedious because easy demons are pretty easily completable for me I just have to get a couple dozen attempts into then but it's kinda boring
fancy
Fancy indeed
16 years of service, damn
Orange Box OG
I made my account to buy transistor
I was aware of steam, since I liked video games, but until then I only watched games instead of playing

im getting my butt kicked by their hard mode update. a welcome change
the normal mode at least set you at level 35 for everyone
hard mode needs you to level up yourself
at least i have a reason to level up now
also hard mode expect you to have unlocked a lot of starter buffs
I just realized I haven’t even used the starlight or however it’s called
I’m a bit exhausted from mirror dungeons since I was grinding them so much at the last week of the first season but at least they give more xp now
i think maybe a strat around faust's fluid sac might be needed...the sp and hp heal are so good
Wow I’ll use it more then… I don’t read what the egos do I pick which one is pretty :)
sunshower is ridiculous rn tho

oh I did not know
I did not even know that egos cost sanity so clearly I don’t read anything in this game
xD
everyone wants to be at max sanity, except grip sinclair
he wants to flip tails
yeah thats basically the only one I use for sinclair

I’m trying to play around with world tendency system in Des, and…

I’m already afraid of the medical bill I’ll get from my shrink
Wtf how’s anyone supposed to figure any of this out without the wiki?
I mean - I get you’re not really supposed to figure it out without help, but still…
Nyeeeeh
absolutely ghoulish https://twitter.com/gamedevdotcom/status/1679876076842123265
what the
At one point, Nichiporchik suggests AI was use to identify a studio lead who wasn't in a "good place" and help them avoid burnout. On the surface, that might seem like a win, but the CEO goes on to suggest that "toxic people are usually the ones about the burn out," adding "they're the same thing."
i can't say what i actually think of this lmao
That's such a terrible idea for so many reasons I can't even begin to describe it
Why on earth would you feed transcripts from meetings to an AI tool to see if it tells about toxicity and burnout instead of just... talking to the person
also an AI tool that is literally just a chatbot and not designed for any of this stuff
This reminds me of the time a professor asked chatgpt if his students were using it's software, to which the AI said yes. The professor then failed his students, none of whom had used the AI at all
I like how he even calls it black mirror-y in the article, like wtf
there was also a case where some lawyers tried using chatgpt in court, they asked it for past cases supporting their case, it literally made up fake cases and when they didn't check those and were called out on it by court, their next step was to ask chatgpt if it made up those cases or if they were real
to which the chatgpt of course said that they were real
so they were like I see zero problems with this
It's laziness compounded by stupidity and it blows my mind that people could even think to do this
idk people are really weird with chatgpt - I had one guy in a group chat asking where he could find certain scientific articles, we couldn‘t find them, and then he explained he let it write an essay for him. At no point did it occur to him that these sources have been made up
lmao
Makes me wonder if, in the past, when people paid others to write essays for them, the same thing happened to them
But the head of a major(?) publisher? Like cmon man you gotta do better than that
I've seen images of documents where it was literally copied from chatgpt including the "I'm an AI and not able to do this properly" warning in the documents
so I assume people just don't read it
they hear AI and think it's a flawless thing connected to every database in existence and knows everything
when it's literally just doing the same thing your phone is doing when it's predicting your next word, it's just extremely good at it
I heard a saying once that went something like "If you know how it works its just another algorithm, if you don't then it's artificial intelligence"
like asking a chess AI to drive a car, I wouldn't sit in that car
This is…
Scary
The second I see the corpo I work for doing this sort of stuff - I quit
Guilty until proven innocent
Just because an AI model tried to predict what I’m going to say
Wtf
Ssssoooooo…
I tried to take a silly picture in demons souls and the photo mode crashed the game…
…at this exact frame

if i find...
that one person who decided to put that one hole in the floor in the Prison of hope...
i will do...
unimaginable things to them...

i died to that single death drop more times than i died to all the bosses COMBINED
i could write a book about those four square feet of empty space
and most of it would be just swear words
(Gamedev company): We're going to use ChatGPT in our work process for general improvement.

...i have no words that can be allowed by the bot
this timeline sucks.. and i don't know where we took the wrong turn
weaksauce
i've proven time and again there are numerous ways of getting around that profanity filter in creative ways
and yet i still can't talk about my fave vin diesel game
this bot is borked
COULD YOU IMAGINE IF THEY HOOKED UP CHATGPT TO THAT PROFANITY FILTER HERE!?
actually...
i shouldn't be giving mods any ideas...
ok you still have it
that's where right application of AI is
game developer 89B77 your attitude has fallen outside of designated parameters. rectify or be reassigned to Hello Neighbor 3
nice! How many hrs did it take?
The guy should have expired 10 000 years ago
Hades II
i have no idea what this means so i'm gonna say you're good 👍
well, the console is working alright
then it's okay
So, uh
I just asked someone who knows a lot about demons souls
And after… a lot of
He concluded that…
Yeah - I’m screwed
Why tho
Pure black character tendency limits my max HP to around 60% (and that’s with a ring that bumps it up), the game is gonna spawn way more black phantoms now, I deal less damage, they deal more, invasion cooldowns are shorter - which means I’ll get invaded more, and some NPCs may even attack me on sight
Oh yeah
That’s the stuff right there
Give it to me harder
