There was once an old space 4X game called Stars! and it was great.
I am not clever enough to set up DOS box or whatever to run it, but I'm looking for something as close as possible.
Stars! was way ahead of its time, for one.
You could do not just custom ships, but custom races. It had a fair bit of micromanagement but I know how to do it so I don't mind it.
I've checked a lot of free phone apps, and they either lack custom races, are openly P2W, or heavily PvP oriented (I have no real interest in multiplayer.)
But I figured this is a super giant server and all and with like 40 billion people here maybe someone knew something.

Maybe try Days Gone? I recommend it on sale, as it has some visual glitches and the story takes a while to get interesting, but you can kill a bunch of stuff basically straight away and it's really fun 🙂

Like, Tullius is just doing his job of defending against the rebellion that's going on, and you also have people like Rikke and Hadvar who kinda symphatize with the rebels even though they don't support them

Ubisoft games don't have long shelves in general imo. They seem to constantly put their games on sale, even ones that have only been out for like 6 months

Because in the speedrunning sense 'optimal' is the fastest way to do a thing and that fastest thing will be differant depending on the game and specific category.
However there are some fundamental things in a speedrun for example base movement that will be optimal regardless of the category being run

I've always been more engaged by the preparation, research, and intelligence necessary to route and plan a speedrun more than the actual execution of one.
The notion that people can dissect these games to the point where they can figure out how to do the seemingly impossible is fascinating
With that being said, "challenge runs" are similarly fascinating because it's crazy to think you can beat a game without, say, pressing the button that makes you jump.
At that point I'd hesitate to call it a speedrun though, and I'd argue that the OP was just referring to categories that let you see more of the game by locking you out of stuff that skips large swathes of it (e.g. SM64 120 Star and No Mem Manip runs of Pokemon Gen 1)
