Hi. I'm legally blind. I randomly decided to give Hades a try on stream one day and not only is it quickly rising up my ranks to the never-filled "Best game of all time," (my standards are high) it's also 89% blind accessible due to the fantastic sound design. To explain, my blind buddy was on stream with me and said "I think I can play that. The audio cues are there." And he is. Isn't that amazing? I think between the two of us, we've nudged some 20 blind people into playing Hades.

I've beaten it 5 times and I play Hell mode exclusively. They use god mod and a mirror mod and Asphodel is a massive problem for them.

I call it 89% accessible. Some font doesn't read with OCR (screen reader) but it's not too bad. Doors are wholly inaccessible (can't plan runs) and Asphodel is a run ender writ large... and I assume Styx's poison floors will be too. I was hoping, nay praying, the devs or modders or someone could have a chat and make a patch to figure out a way to fix these problems. Audio cues for the doors since they already exist and maybe have rare sure footing remove lava damage and epic remove poison floor damage? Or make lava/poison immunity the final tier of god mode? Whatcha think?

I'm an accessibility advocate/consultant by the way. 😛

I'm pushing super hard for this small stuff to be added to a patch because, frankly, I've never loved a game in my 37 years as much as I love Hades. I didn't think I COULD get addicted to a game but I can stream it for ten hours a day. I've never been able to do that with a single game before.

I really want to stress that point because not all advocates are on the same page about this. I do NOT want the game made easier. It's supposed to be difficult.

But, with small audio modifications, it could be made possible for blind people. Bump it up to 99% blind playable (the font screws with OCR like I said but it's manageable.)

But how I'd define it (games that are accessible to the blind without being made FOR the blind,) the most recent ones are Hades, TLOU2 (which my buddy was tapped to help make accessible,) Siralim Ultimate, Mortal Kombat 11, Killer Instinct, and that Sentinal 13 game.

Plus I'm working with Za/Um to make Disco Elysium so accessible that "Helen Keller could have played our game." Which, while I applaud their reach, they recently learned how much work that'll take so that patch is gonna be a long time coming, lmao.

Like I was saying though, when it comes to accessibility, my goal is to not change the vanilla experience as much as possible (as was Superblindman's which is why all the accessibility options are off to the side.)

Ergo, added audio cues instead of something sweeping like removing ground damage.

And if it weren't so simple to fix, if it were a bigger issue than that in other words, I wouldn't bother trying to convince the devs to add these ideas in a patch because, I mean, the game's done. It's over. No more dev time.

I seriously hope so, Thunder. It's the hardest for me personally when it's SOOOO close like this but the devs either don't know (most common) or don't care (far less common.) The usual MO is "I didn't know blind people could play our game. I wish I'd known sooner." I usually try to get into Early Access to address the easy-to-implement issues.

If I had to choose one thing to fix between the doors being unreadable and hard to find for the blind and the lava/poison issue, I'd choose the latter to fix. Warning sounds when you get close.

I’m very close to turning on God mode too. I’ve had about 50 runs and got the last boss to almost dead before I died. He’s really not very forgiving if you misstep a couple of times

A suggestion for @glad cairn and @astral python : make sure you're picking up health and have your death defiance upgraded. I got my first several clears by having 200+ HP, all my Death's Defiances, and using skelly's keepsake. That way you have a lot of room for error.
