Hello there Bioshock folks!
I have asked the mods for permission to post this!
TL;DR: academic survey on storytelling/realism in video games. Survey itself has no spoilers for any game.
I represent the VALUE foundation, a non-profit organization from the Netherlands, tied to the Leiden University. The aim of the organization is to bridge the gap between gaming and education, largely through the lens of the past, and how the past is represented in the realm of video games.
From that perspective, we have recently also gained an interest in how storytelling in videogames works for its audience, as the ways in which stories are told also inform ways in which we tell each other of our history. Similarly, we are interested in how the increase in efforts of realism, - through graphics and character interactions, for example - impact players, as this might also give a sense of validity of historical representation to players.
As such, we have set up a survey on storytelling and realism, and its impact on players, to be distributed in gaming communities. The choice is not random, I myself am a Hades speedrunner and have played the other Supergiant games as well.
We would be very grateful if you took the time to answer the questions in the survey. It is just over 30 questions long, and will take only about 5-10 minutes of your time.
If you have any remaining questions about it, feel free to ask them! I will answer them as soon as I can. If you are wondering about how one would even define storytelling/realism in video games, do not worry! We have added our own understanding of these definitions within the survey, so you do not have to ask about that here. If you understand these things differently, you should not let our definitions change your answers, of course.
