I didn't spoil the story yet, just directions, and imo devil survivor has one of the better battle music

#

...apparently the protagonist can kill a Judgement in Sunless Skies, I really need to buy that one day, once I finish two more endings from Sunless Sea

#

what is better though? the tyrannical and careless Judgements of the Fallen London 'verse, or the tyrannical and manipulative God of SMTverse?

#

both maintain a version of The Great Chain, both have realms that they cannot reach, like the Neath (dead dragon skull) or Parabola (dreams), and Expanse (demons' world) and Diamond Realm (anime handsome Stephen Hawking's world)

also, I think I've changed my mind about trying to speedrun HLD

@opaque quail Hello, I just saw your email. Thanks for the clear answer, at least I know it was not intentional, although I am of course disappointed to not be able to debug. Earlier you encouraged me to make a discord server for Hades modding and so I did, we will see how it goes. If it is "Supergiant compliant" perhaps you could promote it at some point, but that is not something I have a call in.

not sure if its technically a bug or not, but i had a fight with the Fury sister where we both got hit to 0 at the same time it looked like to me, I had a death defied but it played the animation for her death and didnt take my death defied, putting me back at the HP i was at before. main reason I think we both got hit is cause I recall hearing the sound play like I had gotten hit.not sure if its intended to do that or not but i figured better to ssay something and be wrong than say nothing

wide ember
#

I'm so out of practice with modern day internet slang now

#

with that as contrast, this discord still uses a... 'international' isn't exactly the term I'm looking for, but like, using a language that has less temporal barrier?

tardy anchor
#

what do you mean by that? always interesting to hear abt internet linguistics

wide ember
#

the speech of using memes to express emotions or concepts, for example, or using abbreviations of memes or commonly re-typed expressions

#

it's a structure and mechanism similar to shakespearean or lavender, but the angles could be more oblique and less obvious at first sight, and the allusion chain is often about one chain longer

#

incidentally, thanks to internet allowing us to post pictures, our language is also sort of heading in the direction of dolphin languages now

#

but back to internet slang, one "rule" that was sort of popular about 4 years ago was that using the period punctuation "." was to refer to negative emotions, and neutral or happy or sarcastic used no period at the end, only line break

#

so for a moment when I saw Oceloctopus post "It's so good." with a period at the end but was likely honestly referring to positive emotion I had to read it twice, then remembered that about 1 or 2 years ago period sign re-entered internet grammar as an intensive or something

#

overall this discord and especially off-topic doesn't use many memes and has more traditional paper era grammar, so I believe we are still using an instance of english with less temporal barrier

tardy anchor
#

ohhh interesting!!

I just read something awesome but disturbing about soy beans so I gotta share it here as part of my pre-supper discord posting habit: eating soya lowers the risks of many cancer (good) because it contains something that tells the broken cells in our body to die before they could turn into cancer (wtf?)

#

but at the same time, if you only start eating soya post puberty, the same component will somehow increase growth of cancer cells

#

I feel like this info has a lot of anime potential, like monk exorcists eating soy beans to fight monstres or something

#

(ironically, the article ended up deciding that it's ambiguous for women's health but it certainly protects against prostate cancer, confirming that it's good for cis men)

summer hamlet
#

Oh yeah Sundered is great, though very polarizing

#

Great game, imo not a great Metroidvania specifically.

lament steppe
#

what is a Metroidvania?

autumn pasture
#

a 2d action/platforming game (can really lean either way, like hollow knight vs ori and the blind forest) with a large interconnected map that usually requires backtracking after you get new upgrades and open new paths

#

the genre is named after the super metroid and castlevania games

#

it's a genre where different people might have different definitions, i think

serene tulip
#

were you part of the multi-day conversation in here about whether or not Dead Cells counted as a metroidvania?

midnight geode
#

Dead Cells calls itself a roguevania, right? But I could definitely see the 'vania' part being argued.

#

Not that I would argue (as I don't care enough either way, lol), but I could see that.

serene tulip
#

yeah, it really depends on which parts of metroidvanias you consider important enough for a game to be able to define itself as that

wide ember
#

it could be as trivial as food items inside walls and hot monsters

#

but usually it's backtracking, use of upgrades to progress, exploration

lament steppe
#

like, sexy hot, or burning hot

wide ember
#

yes

lament steppe
#

does, like, pokemon count?

#

at least, older pokemon with HMs and stuff

wide ember
#

...you make a good point

#

it's not platformer though and usually metroidvania is a sub-trope/category of platformer so...

#

and you don't do the hack and slash and magic bullets, you enter a RPG battle

#

but it does have the require upgrades part, and the level design part, and the immersive living world part...

autumn pasture
#

yeah like i said, it's an imprecise genre

lament steppe
#

my next thought goes to maplestory

#

hack and slash and magic bullets and RPG battle

#

platformer, upgrades via questlines, free choice of a huge world to explore

wide ember
#

...not wrong but intuitively...

lament steppe
#

Apparently gunmoku of the Starbound Forums agrees:
I...wouldn't quite call Maple Story a Metroid-Vania game. It only seems like it because it uses a persistent world from a 2-D perspective. To me a Metroid-Vania game is one that has a large or procedurally-generated map, played from a 2-D side view perspective, a progressive gain of powers and items, back-tracking to earlier points in the world to utilize these new powers to progress or find new things, and have boss battles. Admittedly, Maple Story DOES posses these qualities, but...I just wouldn't call it that.

wide ember
#

it took somebody mentioning it for me to know that Chinese New Year is soon (hence the Guan Yu aspect), I gotta go buy the collectible stamps

lament steppe
#

wide ember
#

every new year, canada releases chinese-inspired collectible stamps of the year's zodiac

lament steppe
#

lol

wide ember
#

this rat year it's a groom and bride rat

#

look how cute

lament steppe
#

oh wow that really is adorable

#

I've never heard of this

#

my mother has a phobia of rats so maybe that's why

wide ember
#

chinese language groups mouse and rat in one race/species: shu, mouse is little shu and rat is big shu or old shu

#

they are both at the same time considered pests and signs of fortune

#

because you see, if you are too poor, you won't have any of those rodents at home, because no food for them

#

which isn't true in real life but it was a saying

#

so rat's wedding is good things/fortune comes in pairs

with your average deck/engine builder, going infinite is a win condition

neat concept, though i think part of the fun of a deck builder is drawing your entire deck in 1 turn :p

north hamlet

that's true

"In the 12th century, it wasn't possible to reach the moon, but when they did, they realized that space travel was far easier to do than they had thought. They could reach the moon by traveling to the sun or by going around the world."

When people got the idea to travel to space?

#

I guess when they conceptualized it as a place

So when the telescope was invented, or before that

Impossible to answer really

Horror is so not my genre

i'd love to see it tbh - i'm just curious how it would look and play
it'd probably be something more subtle with some deep story and lööps

I mean, thats true

But my issue is that a horror game is one Id have to skip

I cant say Im a big fan of RTS either, but Id love to see what a narrative-focused RTS looks like

serene tulip

sudden torrent
#

I was thinking about RTS, but at the current state that it is I think it is best only if there is possible way to sort of "revive" it, otherwise it could be risky investment, still would surely try it out if it was out.
As for the Horror, I am unsure honestly, as much as I believe in artistic powers of the studio that sounds like something quite far from their usual stuff and will definetly have to think more outside of their usual cornerstones when it will come to creation. I am sure they will get the writting part, but gameplay will definetly have to be something far from the other games, with much different camera angle or even completly go first person and art direction would definetly need quite the change, but I believe in them never the less if they do try it! They will definetly capture the story part well with artistic part, think just the gameplay will be quite tricky to pull off, so that the main thing about Horror having atmosphere stays well.

royal relic
#

2d horror could work
but - you know - i'm just throwing out some ideas

#

i mean - my perfect game would be a spiritual successor to mirrors edge but made by SSGs

sudden torrent

hasty kernel
#

I mean "dead" is always a questionable label

#

But the RTS series has not seen a lot of new games in the past couple years

#

There have been some

#

Just not many

#

Personally Im hoping for a SGG fighting game

i'd rather have a turn based strategy tbh

noble solstice
#

I miss Command and Conquer now sadCat

royal relic
#

but - you know - i'm sure an RTS would be a GOTY too

sudden torrent
#

RTS just needs quite something game breaking for the genre I feel or it may not do as well as Pyre for example. I feel people's interest in RTS shifted over the couple years for sure, unlike for turn based strategies. They are quite modifiable and interesting to come up with, due to pure reason how much free space there is for something to be put or though out.

autumn pasture
#

what did tooth and tail do that was new?

noble solstice
#

Do you think more people prefer grand strategy now?

autumn pasture
#

like i said, not super up on the genre, though i am interested in it

#

oh gee what's the difference between an rts, a turn based game, and a grand strategy

sudden torrent
#

oh basically it had much easier way to get in, as your main control was basically just a "Mouse" in game, which can rally specific or all army, build stuff and focus the army you make.

#

Which I think is quite a move from the usual RTS at least a bit.

royal relic
#

well @autumn pasture
RTS is a real-time strategy
you know - the kind where there's a lot of clicking - your starcrafts and total wars and what not
turn based strategy is... well - turn based
you have all the time in the world to think about your next turn - think HOMM and Civ and all that

#

i remember absolutely loving the crap out of that game when it came out, but...
apparently it quickly faded into obscurity in the back of my mind

sudden torrent
#

I feel like from prespective of design juggling it did quite well, it wasn't exactly a game breaker surely, but it was a change in bit of genre at the time since it surely had lots of the sort of same games about making big armies real time. Which I am not real fan of, wish for more of that go beyond that. Dunno how though, thats' the problem I don't know what I need from RTS hence why the genre is problematic for me, but at the same time amusing. NotLikeThis

royal relic

there was a movement some centuries ago about changing spellings to reflect origin over contemporary pronunciation

you can also blame it for the b in doubt

#

Why change the spelling and not pronunciation though

#

Thats just weird

Like how "Caeser" should be pronounced "Kaiser"

raven harbor
#

I was just hit by a massive wave of nostalgia on account of the Beyblade game

hasty kernel
#

You know whats surprising?

#

Even german doesnt have a word for "feeling nostalgic for something you never had"

raven harbor
#

That would be something like someone my age (25) saying "the 50s were such a simpler, better time" right

#

Usually German nails those sort of oddly specific concepts

#

Maybe call it nonstalgia or something

north hamlet
#

i like that

hasty kernel
#

Thats not quite what I was thinking of, but that feeling doesnt have a word either

#

Honestly Im not sure I can even really put in words what I was thinking of

#

Something like getting Nostalgic for hanging out with your friends under the night sky when camping, even though you never even went camping before?

raven harbor
#

Things you wish you had done, maybe

hasty kernel
#

Yeah

#

Though I suppose thats kind of implied in Nostalgia?

#

Though it gets especially weird when you get Nostalgic for something you missed when at the time, you had no interest in it whatsoever

#

That is not how that is spelt apparently

#

Good to know

blissful charm
#

"things you wished you had done" is more wistful, imo. nostalgia is like hearing a song you listened to on a repeat during summer break as a kid and being brought back to the simplicity of that time

hasty kernel
#

Well I was thinking more of that feeling, minus having actually been there

#

But fair enough

#

Huh, "Wistful" apparently comes from "Wishful"

#

That makes more sense than I expected

And here goes my life again.

one of my favourite quotes abt dwarf fortress development: Your game is working on giving NPC's lives. Our game is working on giving them a working nervous system.

Nice.

I'm personally very fond of Dwarf Fortress' patch notes.

#

Fixed bug with animals picking out clothes to wear Stopped children and babies from joining you on your adventures Made dungeon masters happy with their cloaks and boots again Rain kills everything it lands on Humans in Farming houses are naked Sleeping on a melting iceberg results in waking up as a demon or other underground creature Vampire accuses baby of killing victim Weasels probably shouldn't be found on glaciers Fat dwarves eating causes lag Animal breeding is prevented if animals aren't "willing to marry" Cats dying for no reason - alcohol poisoning?

And many, many more.

ionic viper
#

actually, that last one

#

i'm sure there was a bug where cats got beer spilled on them, they tried to lick it off, the game glitched out and thought they'd chugged a whole mug of beer, and the cat died

#

which is so dwarf fortress it hurts

glass jolt
#

Kind of, yes. It was added that dwarves could spill booze on the ground, making the cleaning task more important. Issue is, the dev didn't think it was necessary to implement different quantities for booze. Cats walked on the spilt booze, then licked their paws clean. Because there was only one possible quantity, every lick resulted in the cats ingesting a full unit of booze, which was the quantity a dwarf drank in one sitting. Which meant cats were pretty much drinking a full barrel of ale every time they cleaned themselves. Ended very badly.

ionic viper
#

whoof

#

i don't actually play df i just like hearing the stories that come out of it so no wonder i was fuzzy on the details lmao

glass jolt
#

Cats have always been at a weird place in Dwarf Fortress anyway. When the devs first introduced trauma for dwarves, you could get them used to violence and gore by subjecting them to it a bit at a time. People went crazy trying to find the best way to do it. The most efficient way I've heard of might be too violent for this server, so I'll just say it involved making dozens of kittens fall down a tower, right in the middle of your meeting hall.

#

@tardy anchor @royal relic "stan" is a bit more than jsut "ooh a big fan"

#

Based on the 2000 song "Stan" by American rapper Eminem,[21] the term has frequently been used to describe artist devotees whose fanaticism matches the severity of the obsessive character in the song. The word has been described as a portmanteau of "stalker" and "fan".

south dock

Is that where the term originates?

Sort of yes, sort of no?

#

Its not quite the level of obsessive and warped as the character Stan

#

But yeah its often used with a pretty negative connotation

blissful charm
#

stan used to be pretty negative but now it's just shorthand for "i really like/support this" usually in a hyperbolic way

south dock
#

I only ever see it used in a positive

#

Like “we stan a legend!”

serene tulip

#

Its ok.

#

Will probably be good in a year

autumn pasture

well, that makes me want to play now then

#

i like to get on things while they're fresh

serene tulip
#

Things I like about it: scratches that pokerman itch without having to deal with the emulators or the consoles I don't have. Most of the Tem are cut AF, my character is cute AF too, they pronouns.
things I don't like about it: Music is pretty weak, balance needs work, doesn't really escape the pokemon archetype nearly enough. You've got gym analogues, a team rocket analogue, even like, the cliffs you can only hop down. It suffers from translation issues which makes the writing kinda bad.

glass jolt
#

Augmented reality Pokemon, iirc. Pretty much Pokemon Go except you didn't have to leave your living room stumptLol

hasty kernel
#

That was Invizimals

#

Which was alright

#

Spectrobes was essentially Pokemon with the twist that instead of catching them, you dug up fossils of the Spectrobes, and revived them and incubated them

#

It also was action-combat rather than the traditional turn-based combat

#

And it was very sci-fi

autumn pasture
#

ooh

#

like the fossil pokemon

#

but all of them

sounds neat

serene tulip

hasty kernel
#

wide ember
#

monster disks yes, the one from the game disk was Mochi

#

the protagonist's team also befriends a tsundere horned blue wolf pretty early

#

dead monsters turn into a disk attached to the ground via plant roots

#

I liked the anime back then but wow, the graphics just never evolved from there, no wonder it lost the digimon-pokemon-monster_rancher commercial battle royale

serene tulip
#

The guy we got to be God emperor turned into an earthworm instead of the great Shai Hulud. I guess he's just an ersatz haderach

There was never going to be a game that could dethrone it

serene tulip

eh

#

give it time

hasty kernel
#

And Digimon wasnt even in the race until recently, instead being mostly an anime and adjacent games franchise

#

Which is better than Pokemon but thats beside the point

serene tulip
#

Digimon was a competitor to tamagatchi

hasty kernel
#

Originally, yeah

#

I mean it still does release those

#

But most people know it from the anime

#

And maybe from the recent Cyber Sleuth games that are pretty good

serene tulip
sudden torrent
#

Yeah TemTem seemingly doing good, but what I noticed from going through Steam forums (Was it a risky idea, as steam forums more likely to be a place to fear) the devs are out there to hear out the community on every aspect of the game just to be sure, so think that's good. I am sure they will achieve something quite big for at least in comparission to gen 1 pokemon.

(lunar new year festivities is near the end but I haven't tried lantern riddles yet... am I allowed to organize it here?)

#

cool, so "lantern riddle" is to my understanding, an event where lanterns come with riddles attached to them, and the first to answer the riddle correctly can take the corresponding lantern home

#

because lantern is difficult to send over the internet, I'll be using steam codes: each steam game will have a riddle attached, and first to answer it correctly will receive the code in dm, and it will start around noon in eastern standard time, this friday the 31st

@ionic viper Tekken is a fighting game, one of the characters, Shaheen, does a double kick that makes him spin in place.
