Kristen Stewart with short hair is going to get me to watch so many movies I wasn't otherwise going to watch
See: Underwater
they should have exploited her butch lesbian look sooner instead of trying to shove her into the useless view point girl in a hetero-romance-ish movie roles
what the movies did with her at first was the equivalent of forcing david brian gilbert into non-nosense manly man roles
now that she looks amazing, I hope the writing will be good too
I have like, literally no faith that charlies angels will be anything more than a Trying-to-be-woke half-effort jokefest
Underwater looks OK, but it leans too scary for my usual tastes
I want her in a sci-fi hacker thriller
can it be cyberpunk?
can we go back in time and make her the Major in a live action ghost in the shell that is actually good on its own merits and not just an attempt to make fans happy by redoing the most famous scenes from the show and movies?
and can they make batou the rock?
that'd be funny
the rock doesn't look half as good as batou did in my heart
is there someone closer to idris elba for batou's role?
I guess that works, I'm trying to remember who was the male actor who was playing with his tiny puppy and decided to throw the puppy in the pool, and upon realizing that his puppy wasn't good at swimming he immediately jumped into the pool and rescued his puppy, but his cellphone died as result
actually, jason Momoa would probably make an amazing batou
because see, batou was willing to risk his life to buy his dog the favourite dog chew and got hacked and almost killed
That episode of SAC where batou is infiltrating the military base to spy on the ex boxer is seriously one of my favorites
batou also spoiled the think tanks into loving him enough to sacrifice their lives for him, and when his coworkers laughed that nobody that mattered got hurt, he looked visibly not agreeing with them
Then they made fun of him when he though the major got shot D:
to be fair, major got like 3 spare bodies waiting at her secret base
but the think tanks did die, along with the humans who only obeyed order to capture them

Keep on waiting for the fuchikomas to break out into hushed giggles
I kind of hoped the secretary/typist/interface gynoids in the drone fliers could also attain sentience, but I guess the whole point is that they don't
the identical office lady look gynoids that the tachikoma tricked at least once
Well like, they weren't needed for the level of complexity that they were half-aiming for with the tachikomas
I feel like if they can be jammed with a simple logic paradox they shouldn't be flying anything like
if they are coming at you and you can just yell at them "What I am saying is a lie!" and they immediately jam, I believe that's quite a signficant bug
then again they are not required to understand anything, all they need is to relay and obey
huh, I need to rewatch that scene
otherwise if two human commanders give mutually exclusive commands they'd implode
I mean, I'm pretty sure that's not true, as much as anything in the GITS universe can be called true
anyhow
is bedtime for me
nini
night
Honestly I didnt think the GitS movie was bad
Though it definitely was just an attempt at fanservice, as reboots tend to be
I also dont think Crews or Elba would be suited for Batou, their faces are too round
You need someone with a face like Dolph Lundgren
Dolph Lundgren does look like a very good fit
the 2017 live action GitS was a fail because most loved the series for the philosophical and intellectual side, but the live action was more of pure action fanservice (so ironically closer to the original manga, but far away from the animated series)
and the protagonist name... Motoko Kusanagi is such an esteemed name now, if you have to invent a new english name for her, you can't go less pretentious and pompous and obviously pseudonym than something like Jane Excalibur
I mean, she ultimately was still Motoko Kusanagi
Wonder if that was a last minute change
But yeah, it was just more of a general action flick
Then again, Id argue the GitS movies were a lot more philosophical than the manga they originated from
I think they were trying to go for a SAC kinda feel
But even SAC had strong philosophical themes, even if they were more subtle
and more character complexities
Yeah
The characters in the movie were largely barely present
I dont even think Ishikawa was in it
Wasn't she actually banned motoko but the military folks called her Mira or something?
yeah
Mira Killian was a false identity given to her
She actually was Motoko Kusanagi
Which ironically is still not very faithful to the source material
Because one of the few things we know about the Major is that "Motoko Kusanagi" isnt actually her real name
Like the bones of a good story are there they just refused to actually make anything good with it.
Well like, what even is a real name
Is kinda like right in the theme
I also really liked the concept of a "Stand-Alone Complex"
Mmh, thats not quite the same thing I dont think
A Stand Alone Complex is when a lot of people are imitating the same behaviour/ideology/actions, making it seem like its all one coordinated group rather than many individuals
But also one where there is no original
Everything is imitated without a source that is being imitated
I guess another way of putting it is that its an individual collectivism of sourceless imitation
I guess one example in real life would be that cool S
You probably know the one I mean
cool S, sailor moon tapes at the summer camp, mirror rituals, caffeination?
Im not familiar with the last 3 actually
so those yellow school buses with overhead TVs for summer camps in north america usually have the sailor moon VHS tapes in them
brb I'm getting on my bus
Ah
Yeah Im not american so I have no experience with that, but that might be the case
Also I believe sol is referring to mirror rituals like "if you say bloody Mary in the mirror n times you will summon her"?
I chose the cool S because as far as Im aware, its just about everywhere
Thats urban myths, I think those are slightly different
Stochastic terrorism might be a bit too overt for true stand alone complex but they're in similar veins.
You don't need a virus if you release suggestive media.
In that its individual collectivism? Yeah
You dont need an organized group that is prone to falling apart if you just have individuals doing what you suggest
so guerrilla gardening counts?
Guerrilla ... gardening?
I love art museums.
guerilla gardening is planting and tending gardens in public spaces without permission from the relevant governing authority
basically what you do when your local council is bad at their job
people also do that kind of stuff for street signs and the like too
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/586854095965519904/655859100944433172/20191215_144617.jpg this book is giving me anxiety
I feel compelled to shoplift it
But shoplifting is wrong and what if I get caught?
you were doing it for the vine
this was how vine died
If I thought I could I would reverse pickpocket it into someone's tote
Hypothesis: buy the book. Take my purchased copy and replace it on the shelf in favor of one that I did not in fact purchase
A copy of the same book *
reminds me of the thread on reddit where people were convinced having a garden in NZ was illegal
Oof
Is there something we need to do to get permissions to post screenshots? Because I can't post images for some reason...
You can post links to images
ah okay. like from imgur or something?
Yep!
Thanks!
which game? +_+
Ys VIII
no that's just letters
Well they use the roman version of 8
I have no idea why its called Ys though
Its a shame she is only a side NPC though
Though it kinda makes sense since she is clearly very OP
There is an enemy type in the game that requires weapons made from a specific metal to even be harmed normally
She casually dispatches 2 of them without such a weapon
ah yes, V triple L
pretty sure games are the only reason I ever learned roman numerals lol
I learned them because of Asterix and Obelix
Incidentally the same reason I ended up learning latin
For some odd reason school seemed keen on me learning Roman unary.
Silvia... her upper arms are about as wide as her head...
I have finally found another jodariel level buff video game character T-T
She has six packs too
Muscle grandma should be more common as archetype

@wide ember you're just going to say that and not link anything?
She's got that ultra-high-level RPG armor on, dang.
Maybe if she had stuck with low-level gear she wouldn't have that giant scar.
Puts the βGrandβ in Grandma
Anyone else exhausted #relatable
Big mood
Tbh Silvia's design even makes sense since she is a gladiator
Gladiators didn't exactly wear much
And yes, muscle grandma should be more common
In general old, but strong fighters should be equally represented
What game is that from? DQ11?
Dq 11!
It reminds me of the Watchdogs Legion trailer that I surpsiginly enjoyed
"She isnt old, she is experienced"
I'm sad because a friend who promised to hang out hasn't responded to me and I'm going home today.
Once a friend who told me to hang out was an hour late because she got the day wrong initially but after she ran there she treated me to the best Asian sweets at local Chinatown
...the sweets place later bankrupt and got replaced by bubble tea lounge
I hope your friend will give you a good apology later, Oceloctopus
@drifting plover #bot-commands
pretty sure that role is for which is your favourite game though
(which is basically the same as owning all of them)
Cool thanks :'D
God there is so much I wish I could forget right now.
Studying for finals right now, I have the opposite problem
good luck
Could you take a look at my website. This is for school purpose only, thanks in advance. http://conifer.000webhostapp.com/ Sorry for posting again but I need some more visits, because I need to make an Google Analytics presentation.

Anyone able to help me? I'm trying to get the epic games store, but all I seem to get is the Epic Games Launcher. π I opened the launcher to see if Hades was in there, but it isn't. It only shows Unreal Engine. I'm probably being very dumb or am missing something but I read the FAQ on the epic games site and apparently this is what is supposed to happen. I've owned Hades for a long long time and wanted to play again so... if anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it.
I figured it out. For some reason the game Library was hidden in settings.
Should be in the side pane? (the store that is) from memory
I figured it out. For some reason the game Library was hidden in settings.
oh, well then
So weird how it defaults to hide games library. @knotty frost
Appreciate the help tho. :3

Good morning, king.
greetings brother
I just want a game that's basically this:
CEOtaku Anime Fighting Game Tournament in Orlando, FL
Hosted by Alex Jebailey and CEOGaming, stream by FunkyP
But with full movement in a 3D arena, and also all of the characters have projectile weapons.
Unfortunately having it be in a 3D arena makes this kind of gameplay impossible
Are you absolutely sure?
Yep
Dammit.
The main problem comes down to both the fact that with the need to be able to move sideways as well as forward/backward you lose a lot of potential inputs and as a result nuance, while the block-string gameplay becomes impossible as you can just escape out of a blockstring by moving to the side
if the projectile weapons include lasso/tether type, it could be closer even if it's still not it
Hot take: Perfect guard/dodge is the most important invention in video game history
Frame perfect is a bit too specific
But any kind of perfect timing
Usually it gives you a bit of leeway
RoA has a 3 frame lead up
2 frame startup, 7 frame parry, then endlag for another 20 frames
at 60 fps
fighting games, maybe, but I'd like to argue that physics is the most important
I was more thinking Action RPG actually
Also, idk if physics were really that important
If you mean the "relatively realistic" physics
Interesting take, my main issue is that in most games that had a lock-on camera, I found that using it was more annoying than not using it
Z-targeting really is the pinnacle
Z-targetting?
Ocarina of Time
Ah, right
Also, now that I think about it, I guess the ability to save your progress is the most important innovation
True, I guess on a physical level that is the most important one
While mechanic-wise I will continue to defend my choice of perfect timing as a gameplay element
Have any of you heard of the college protests happening in India caused by Modi's nationalistic citizenship policies?
I've heard of this sort of thing in passing
There's police brutality?
It's cool that people are resisting nationalism around the world
It's a complicated issue.

It's probably amazing
As I'm not gonna listen to anything ost related till I play the game myself
i'm listening to lace right now and it is π
I know what I'm listening on my way back to work~
it SLAPS
the lace one is Good
disappointed but not surprised that per statement it's going to be a very strings-heavy ost
silksong, i mean, and hollow knight was too, but personally dung defender was one of my favorite tracks from the first game
i just like.......the brass
City of Tears β€οΈ
yeah apparently so!
I see you over there, @buoyant frigate :KaRappa:
@buoyant frigate PLEASE play hollow knight
not kidding it is one of the best games i've ever played
and this is coming from someone who took three tries to get into it and found it pretty hard
Second best game ever made, after Portal, don't @ me on this, you will not change my mind.
i haven't played portal so i don't have grounds to argue
god every day i think about silksong and when it is going to come out
FJGGFHFDHDH this was a fun @ to return to
The Chrimmis money is starting to come in so... maybe...
it's also not a very expensive game π think it's like fifteen dollars on steam
I should listen to the soundtrack tbh, thatβs usually the tipping point on whether I get a game or not
h
Sparrow on what platforms? π
Dang 50% is a steep sale, ooo....
Iβm gonna be dumb and buy the switch version for $1 off probably
oh if you listen to the soundtrack you are doomed
i could buy it and both soundtracks right now with the money i was planning on using for steam!hades
h
π€
there's dlc for hollow knight but team cherry, the absolute mad lads, made it all free
Ooo nice
they're Also the absolute mad lads who said 'we're going to make a dlc with a different player character [actually makes sequel]'
team mad lads
The dlc are the stretch goals from the kickstarter
Silksong was also meant to be a free dlc but it got so big it became its own thing
epic games' 12 days of free games is making my wallet happy
@autumn pasture (moving) im going to be honest with you. i dont know what metroidvanias are
The term is a portmanteau of the game series Metroid and Castlevania. ah...
yea!
altho hollow knight is, imo, the best metroidvania ever made (change my mind)
oho....
Its pretty good, can agree
you know i'm big on Genre Mashups And Looseness but basically, a sidescroller/platformer game w an interconnected map and a system of upgrades/movement abilities that make more of that map accessible to the player as the game goes on
which promotes backtracking and a particular playstyle
it's got that like, sweet level design
man, where's that video i watched abt hollow knight's level design in particular
hollow knight has GOD TIER level design tbh
// This video spoils the entirety of Hollow Knight //
Hollow Knight takes place in the sprawling kingdom of Hallownest: an underground ant's nest of forests, mines, basins, and waterways. In this episode of Boss Keys, I look at the shape, structure, and sequence of exploring...
it reminded me a lot of watching my brother play dark souls!
Ay, GMT makes great vids about game design
for other reasons too, there's also a similar checkpoint/shortcut system, the boss design, the environmental storytelling......
yeah i watch that channel a fair bit
Actually, is it being a sidescrolling platformer a requirement for being a Metroidvania?
Alright, reading the wiki page its not required, but typical
I do like the concept, though I feel like it shines more in a 3d space than a 2d one
nier automata was sometimes a metroidvania
i'd definitely like a 3d flying/swimming game metroidvania
one castle platform required a jump in 3D as shorcut
I mean the general concept is present in games like Crosscode
And I feel Crosscode nailed it
Ys VIII also did it, but I felt it was a bit weaker on the exploration side
In general I like when video games let you explore for explorations sake
Now that I think about it, whats the difference between the metroidvania and the adventure genre?
adventure is usually in a broad open space
metroidvania is in limited space where the space itself is presented almost like a character of its own
so even if you have adventure in a deep ocean floor or dungeon, if the space does not have a character and also plot important it's not exactly metrovania I think?
I mean it sounds correct to me
Then again, I dont know, I never was deep into the metroidvania genre
by the name, it sounds like Ys should be metroivania?
Its wide open space actually
it's named after the france equivalent of atlantis after all
so it sounds like there should be a plot important magic land that is semi-sentient
Oh so thats why its called Ys
adventure games tend to be more about exploration and puzzle-solving
whereas a metroidvania blocks areas of the map from being accessed until you have specific upgrades
wait but that would make zelda and banjo kazooie sound like metroidvania
Well, the games Im thinking of do also block those areas of the map off
there's also less of a focus on combat in adventure games
In the case of Ys, you needed to get the ability to breathe underwater to get to a bunch of areas
In crosscode each time you get an elemental upgrade, that unlocks areas as well
Hm
Maybe Adventure doesnt mean what I thought it meant
Ys was a sunken city in real life myth so it better
Again, as you might tell by my reaction, Ys doesnt actually feature in Ys VIII
(the unsunken version is known today as Paris, and legend has that if Paris sinks, then Ys would resurface)
Apparently Ys the city (or an equivalent thereof) was part of Ys 1
Which is a game from the eighties
so the game title is a leftover...
Basically
The first game was called that because it featured in the plot
Then they made a bunch of sequels
Where the subtitle is relevant to the plot
On a sidenote, does anyone have recommendations for exploration-heavy games?
Preferrably 3d
π myst series π
I think I played Myst when I was a kid
Abzu is gorgeous (no fighting though)
ha, maybe my deleted save will come to your rescue when you reach that ending
I think Abzu is that game that is a lot like Subnautica but more pretty
Rime is also great
Oh, Rime looks interesting
Ill check it out
Also Crosscode is on sale, you should all get it, its really good
what are the sellpoints of Crosscode?
rime is okay, abzu is very good, hollow knight i'll mention again, aer memories of old was pretty good also, i know ori and the blind forest is a classic but i'm just about to start it
Its level design, and possibility to explore are phenomenal
random generated maps or designed fixed maps?
Fixed
Outside of that, its a pixel 3d ARPG with a fun plot, great characters, charming music and good puzzles
Its probably my favourite game from last year
Its pretty long though, which can be a plus or a minus depending on how you see it
depends if it's real length or artificial stretch
Real length
if all of it are actual content, then that's great, just don't stall the player by make leveling slow down to a crawl or make the player backtrack for hours to get key items
You dont have to grind if thats what youre worried about
ah good
Length mostly comes from quests, the maps being big and open-ended, and the dungeons you get through being pretty long as well
Plus puzzles
Some of them are tricky
also can I become a benevolent demon overlord
hows people?
Tired but I can't sleep
Poem?
Same as invis, tired but can't sleep
I had this idea last night and I'm trying to remember it so I can write it down before I forget again
Classic sleepy brain move
Coming up with things and forgetting them
I think I'll quit sleep and do something else
too many things to do, maybe we should've evolved into resting the way dolphin brain does
Okay poem is done
nice! what'd you make?
Made a lime tart
Then decided to make meringue because the tart uses 4 egg yolks
Then made cookies because the cookies use 2 egg yolks
So we had 6 egg whites worth of meringue
Bringing all that plus semifreddo to a christmas party tomorrow
Was a lot of work but i had two friends over so i got to boss them around

And tomorrow we'll all be at the party to steal all the lime tart
Literally all of it
Yes
Hhhhh I want some lime tart
Sup?
Hi
How goes?
fair
hermes is approaching at a fast speed, please help me
The #ask-supergiant is closed now or i have to make anything special to be able to post? Im a bit confused :S
Okay, thanks
Honestly Id love to play a set against Greg in any of the ArcSys games
Greg is my favorite gamespot reviewer
his Mafia and Max Payne reviews were so on point
I might have to get back into horror if Supergiant does
i will never voluntarily play a horror game by myself but.........oh god if sgg made one that'd be tough
i want sgg to scare me im ready
i don't want sgg to scare me i don't want to be scared π°
I want anything that sgg wants me to have or pass by
i mean i would play it but with the utmost trepidation
I really hope they dont make a horror game tbh
Because thats just a genre I dont play
Itd be the first SGG game Id have to skip
Then don't play it if they make one π€·ββοΈ
I don't know what to say to this π
"See you next decade" The only time you can do this joke and you took it
Of COURSE I took it!!
Now the question is
Will there be an opportunity to say "hindsight is 20/20" at the end of 2020
Wait no
You say it on the first of january 2020
Now I know what Ill be doing in 12 days
Pun game so strong you're planning weeks in advance.
My wit is so fast I come up with puns a week ago
pedantic Wouldn't "next decade" be 2021? π
Generally people count from the 0th year
I think it has to do with terms like "the 90s"
Which are what you commonly think of when it comes to decades
And which, by neccessity of their title, have to start with the 0th year
β¦butβthere was no 0th year. We go from -1 BC to 1 AD, thanks to Bede. But yes, the popular view is why most folks partied like it was 1999 when the new millenium didn't really begin until 2001. Like I said, pedantic. π dives under a rock
wait whos bede
If you're content with years 1 AD thru 9 AD being a decade, sure. π
Its year 0 to year 9
Because we dont think of decades based on the first year
Its not the 202nd decade
Its the new 20s
There was no year 0, though.
Yes
But that doesnt matter for decades since were not counting decades from the very first one
Bede was the Benedictine monk who among other things, according to Wikipedia, "also helped establish the practice of dating forward from the birth of Christ (Anno Domini β in the year of our Lord), a practice which eventually became commonplace in medieval Europe".
Centuries and millenia are put in the context of the first one
Decades arent
21st century, 2nd millennium
But noone says 202nd decade
Instead decades are put in the context of their first number
Eighties, nineties, so on
And since it would be weird for the 80s to not include the year 80
They start with the 0th year
It really just depends on context. Nominally, the "0s" are indeed the years 1 AD thru 9 AD, and nominally the next decade is the group of ten years beginning with 2020. But ordinally, which as you say isn't used much except by pedants, the "next decade" would begin in 2021.
Even ordinally it wouldnt, because decades were never tied to the same system
And what system is that?
Well, counting based on 1st year AD
Decades as an important historical concept didnt really came to be until the 20th century
Ordinally the first decade AD would be years 1 AD thru 10 AD. Nominally, the 0s (BC or AD) aren't decades at all, but novenniums (or novennia). Remember, in 1999 folks were having this debate about millennia. And centuries. Is 2000 the end of the 20th century or the beginning of the 21st? The end of the 2nd millennium or the start of the 3rd?
That's words for ya!
Only if you base what a decade is on the first one
But its a concept conceived so late that it was based on the last one
And counted backwards
Hence why its not the first decades
But the 0s
The original naughties. π
Liminal years go both ways?
to those of you who were convincing me to listen to the Hollow Knights OST- it has very Kubo and the Two Strings vibes and I am living for it
heared you newest Hollow Knight:Silksong OST Samples?
the hollow knight ost is so good
Interesting, I never would've thought to connect HK to Kubo musically.
Is self promotion for Supergiant related things specifically or general creative work?
Both
If it's an sgg related artwork/song cover etc. #fan-works is a good place for it too

Welp. My question was barely answered.
No offense, but... of course it was. As Greg said, that is a difficult question to answer. Especially on the spot in the middle of a very quick and dirty Q&A.
The Rise of Skywalker was... Not good.
While I know he's a writer, even some of greatest game dev minds in the business would need a lot of time to try and seriously answer such an oddly specific yet complex question. From your previous posts, I know it's a question you've wanted them to answer for a long while now, but your expectations should be a bit more realistic.
And I've heard about as much about Rise of Skywalker, lol.
I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but it's unfortunate nonetheless.
It's not the worst Star Wars movie ever, but when you bump out one of the Prequels for that coveted Bottom 3 spot...
OK what's your bottom 1
Attack of the Clones.
OK because if you said phantom menace we would have had problem
I used to think Phantom was the worst, and then I watched Attack again since 2002.
Yeah.
Was talking to someone a while back and he said there's a decent political thriller buried in The Phantom Menace.
i believe it
It's got the best song to ever come out of Star Wars, Duel of the Fates.
I was messing around with tier lists with some friends and made this.
Thought this community might have some fun with it??
OH YAY iβm glad thereβs finally one of those
Apparently the leaks for Rise of Skywalker were accurate
Which isnt good given how trash those were
I can't see Rise of Skywalker in my current country, no spoilers please
just installed a bunch of free epic games i've been sitting on for a while
might go wild and do a mega-stream later π€
SUPERHOT is free on the epic store today only! highly recommend!!
superhot was my nickname in high school
because I was constantly running a low grade fever
yeah i just picked up superhot! it had been on my steam wishlist for a while but i never felt strongly enough about it to buy it
if I waited until i felt strongly about anything I'd never buy anything
it's a good strategy for saving money lol
Yeah, the only problem is I've replaced feeling strongly about things with impulsivity
oh yeah same on superhot
i wanted it but didn't quite feel like i'd be good at it enough to justify spending money
how are people?
Like, as a species?
Skywalker was pretty bad.
As a species it's really not bad. We made it off our planet.

There's also a free mod on steam called portalhot, for people who own portal 2
It's exactly what it sounds like
I did not know they were doing free christmas games on epic
Many thanks for notifying me to everyone who's mentioned it
Oh shoot, almost forgot to check what todayβs game is. Thanks for the reminder!!
I havenβt played Superhot yet and am excited to try it :O
I have like 50 games from giveaways on Epic alone. And like 30 on Steam from Humble giveaways and a bunch of games from GOG. IRL is more generous than a F2P game x).
I can't play Superhot. The visual style hurts my eyes and the gameplay looks too frustrating for me... But I appreciate what I've seen of it in LPs.
And I don't mean hurts my eyes as in "it's bad". I mean hurts my eyes as in "the contrast literally gives me headaches".
Curse of the Obra Dinn is another game I can't play because it gives me headaches. Even if you add color to it. :C
CURSE THESE EYES
Yeah Obra Dinns graphics also made me decide against getting it
I suddenly want weird apples
like the ghost white ones and the dark purple ones (with dots to make them look like starry skies)
Good day to whom I will turn to me did not charge the game after I bought Hedas
Steam offers me to buy Pyre, but it should already be in my collection if you visit the Hades page
Vlad, the copy of Pyre goes to your steam invintory
from there you can add it to your own library or gift it to a friend
glad to hear ^_^
I recently actively use stim and still do not know everything I'm sorry
nah, you're all good no need to apologize. If you have questions about how to use steam ask, I'm sure someone here will be able to help should you need it ^_^
thanks again
im going to make a transistor animation now(only up until the cybil fihgt because i still havent beaten it ; ;)
Could you take a look at my website. This is for school purpose only, thanks in advance. http://conifer.000webhostapp.com/

Theyre more than just claws friends
@serene tulip May want to delete that. Dashes and asterisks are apparently against server rules.
How are we supposed to survive Hades without Dashes
Aside from that, RWBY has had guest appearances in some games.
From #h1-builds-and-combat but yeah it's appeared in a couple, notably in BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle (which also crossed over with Persona, yay for weeb geek out moments)
Yeah they fit surprisingly well into BBTAG
Neopolitan is fun, but man did I wish she wasnt as bad as she is
Also screw Yang, her semblance overrides the current song with "I burn" once its activated
I did notice that the RWBY weapons are ridiculously stupid, even by anime standards
Like the sword that is also a gun, and a chainsickle
For those who have read or played the Witcher, should I start with the first game or is 3 a good starting point?
Witcher has novels, worse case you can read them first (but start with 3 is fine)
I absolutely just purchased a card game because Jen Zee did the art
It's called CrossFire

Man I always get confused when people say "card game" and dont mean a TCG or LCG
Would you call baten kaitos card game though
Late response, but I personally would suggest starting with Witcher 2.
Mainly because... in some ways, I actually kinda prefer how it was smaller in scope and more focused than Witcher 3? And less buggy.
I never thought I'd say a game is too big or has too much stuff to do or takes too long to complete in full... But Witcher 3 actually achieved it.
For my tastes, anyway.
Yknow, looking back at it, this might be one of the best years in gaming in quite a while
I didnt even realize Baba is You was from this year because there were just too many good games
2019 did have a lot of excellent games!
Merry Christmas everyone!!!
everyone whos played hades today

lmao
Merry Xmas!

Odd question: anybody play Pokemon Go? I need a friend for a quest
Merry Chrysler
Hm, out of curiosity, in the games you guys played, was the last boss usuall the hardest, or the second-to-last boss?

Usually it's a specific boss in the middle that has no reason being as difficult as it is
But of the two I usually find it to be the last boss
Interesting
Back when I was a kid, like 10 or so years ago, I made the observation that at the time, it was always the second-to-last boss that was hardest
The thought reoccured to me recently, but I wasnt sure if it still applied
Happy winter solstice!
ok boys
so im planning to take my girl for a romantic christmas
any ideas?
so far ive got christmas chopping and an eleant restaurant to take her
light shows are also great
I bought Red Dead Redemption II today as a Third-day-of-Hanukkah gift to myself.
on Steam
I'd buy Hades on Steam, but I'd much rather prefer to buy it on GOG or itch.io
I'll wait until the game is done.
happy holidays everyone!
if anyone has switch games to recommend π much appreciated, although i already bought 2 final fantasy games today
sayonara wild hearts + untitled goose game
ooh, i just bought sayonara wild hearts
this year i loved the swapper, hollow knight, abzu, and the gardens between!
ooh and katana zero
Rabi-Ribi is a great Metroidvania
What Remains of Edith Finch is also terrific
Let's not forget Untitled Goose Game
If you don't have Luigi's Mansion 3, it's quite good
Doraemon: Story of Seasons is terrific if you don't already have Stardew Valley yet want a Farming Game
These are just some off the top of my head
My favorite game on Switch is also my favorite game of all time: Zelda: Breath of the Wild
In case you want a Jackbox-style game, check out Use Your Words
It was designed by Brentalfloss, and IMHO, I like Brent Black: Game Designer far more than I like Brentalfloss
Also, since this is a Supergiant discord, don't forget Bastion and Transistor!
Oh, and don't forget Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
There's really tons to enjoy on the Nintendo Switch
Are you supposed to get titan blood every time you beat the first boss?
Um, what?
Or do I not understand the bounty thing?
Are you talking about Hades?
Yeah
This is off-topic
rabi-rabi looks very 80s-90s anime video game, can I assume that it's super hard?
It helps if you played some bullet-hell Shmups, but fortunately there are adjustable difficulty levels and I play on "novice" (there's one under that which is "casual")
π€ has anybody played "my time at portia" bc it looks like the kind of thing i would be interested in
I can't speak for others, but I'm sorry to say I have not played it.
@ionic viper i've tried it, what do you want to know?
i was just looking through some of the reviews and i'm on the fence about buying it - just looking for general impressions i guess? i've played a LOT of stardew valley and was wondering if this one matches up
it's weaker than stardew imo, the characters are really bland
the story seemed to be going somewhere? i stopped playing before it did
very grindy early game
don't know how it fares later on though
i'd recommend you do so
If you like Stardew I recommend Doraemon: Story of Seasons, which is a Harvest Moon game by another name with Doraemon characters
in contrast, my grandma has played almost 1k hours of stardew (I have no idea how) and she really liked my time at portia
man, your grandma sounds cool, and also stardew valley is 1000% the kind of video game i would expect a grandma to enjoy
She probably romanced harvey
played a bit of portia. it's got some jank, but it's pretty fun if you're looking for a harvest moon em up
if you do play it, first thing you should do is mute the voice acting
also look up a beginners guide. first month of portia is essentially just tiptoeing around noob traps.

hope i can post this here lol
drinking ginger cloves water in attempt to cure mild digestive issue
Ginger is such a good flavorf
ginger is incredible
yesterday at my aunt's they had really good, really strong ginger beer and i think i drank four bottles π
ginger beer is so good
I need to check if my lemons are fine so I can make ginger lemonade
(once Iβm home)
rip me i accepted a sub job that starts at 7:45 in the morning
rip
It's like fighting games, I physically can't input the buttons correctly, but I really wish I could.
And FTL is a candidate for best roguelite.
God, now I want pvp necrodancer.
fighting games are conceptually great but i'm both too dumb and too slow to play them
PVP necrodancer would be amazing
use one hand for directions and another hand for actions like low attack high attack low block high block etc
nidhogg with a rythm element?
Yeah fighting games are hard
I like Rivals of Aether
Platform fighters do tend to be less heavy on the inputs
I like em less though than Anime fighters
I adore Melee.
all I know is that I can't RaR
and that's really important for characters who aren't clairen
Currently Im playing a bunch of BBTAG, but my favourite is still BlazBlue Centralfiction
Id probably enjoy the Under Night series more if I could play it
Tekken gang rise up
bwahahaha I missed the free super light drifter the first time and hesitated about buying and now it's free on epic games (until 11AM)
(claim before 11am and it's yours)
also I do still have lemons in my fridge, most seem to be usable too
the intro looked great, Iβll see if Iβll have time to play it more after work tomorrow
HLD is one of my favorite indie games
story telling with pictures instead of text
some hard modes
nice mechanics
and Drifter just fells good
Honestly i didn't like hld at first and refunded the game but then i kept hearing constant praise for it so i thought maybe i did something wrong and i should try harder next time
bought the game again and had a blast with it
What put you off at first?
well... it's the map
Because of how vague it seems?
@north hamlet yeah it's super confusing and doesn't tell me anything, only good for teleportation
I figured out how to use it to some degree eventually, but it's never very precise
The whole game is honestly an exercise in stylistic vagueness
i didn't bother using it much anymore 2nd time i tried the game
@plush orbit What sort of thing would you want to make? (From hades spoilers)
well thats the thing, i just have ideas
me personally i would like to work for a studio in general thats like a dream of mine but at the same time all i feel like i know is design and writing
I've always found it easiest to like...think of the thing I want to do and start from there, then google the best way to do it
It's not comprehensive but it gets you started quick, and tbh from what I hear, adapting stackexchange code is a big part of CS lol
So for example mods are a good place to start because modding communities tend to have robust resources, forums etc
thats a good idea
It also gives you something you can put on a portfolio to say "look, I can work with someone else's code"
yeah
There are also high-level design frameworks made to be more user friendly, like ren'py, rpgmaker, etc
Unity
true true
i have ideas now, i honestly never considered modding
i kinda snowed in on the whole "gotta make original game" bit of education
Making something is important to show that you can - but you don't have to make every single piece of it from scratch
You can focus on what you want to design
For example if you can't draw or make music, you can use stock images and sounds on top of the code you want to show off
yeah
Mods are good for that because you have resources already there from the game
you right
i wish i had my pens at home
you mentioned mods and it feels like i have ascended
i will, thank you
modding is honestly how some of the eariest game devs got hired too
also unity is free and accessible if youβre looking to make your own stuff
i believe ue4 is also free? that one has a flowchart-based programming language built into it
some people find that easier to grasp than written code
I keep telling myself to play around with unity but then I get distracted
that and needing to learn how to code heh
i believe there are some unity plug-ins which make the engine have more of a flow chart thing like unreal too
There's also Godot engine, just to provide another alternative.
UE4 is free
They take a fee once you use it commercially though, but
Well your first project is unlikely to be used commercially
lmao very very true
iirc epic will waive the fee if you publish on their store though
which makes sense given itβs their engine
I've got the feeling that all of you who don't know how to code should rather find some programming course before jumping into the pecularities of a game engine. Perhaps even make a simple game without using an engine. Just to get some idea of what you're doing. Copy pasting some code from tutorials into a game engine might work for some time, but I'm afraid that it would become overwhelming really fast. Also because you'd have to learn two things at once, programming AND the engine. Better take it step by step.
Also one thing, most programming languages follow similar logic, so if you learn to write programs in one, it means that you only need to learn the syntax and specific features of the other and perhaps also learn to do the stuff that the previous language did for you (memory management, declaring variables). But you won't have to relearn the entire programmer mindset because that will be the same.
3d games are a nightmare, but I picked up python by making a bunch of little 2d game experiments with pygame
It's not necessarily the best way to learn but it worked for me
I knew a great university level Python online course which was fun and had games as projects every week and gave you a good programming background, but the platform it was on put up some paywalls now and while the course is free, the assignments might be only for those who paid for it (there's no mention of it though so perhaps it is completely free again). If anyone is interested I can DM a link. I don't think any of the engines actually use Python, but I found what I learnt there very valuable and as I've said, it was fun.
I know programming, but I can't recommend my path if you're interested in game programming... though learning haskell first made me able to pick up new languages within about 30 minutes of working with them
haskell is also horrifically unsuited to game programming
(if only because the nerds who use/work on it are pretty much totally uninterested in making it work)
I'm sure SOMEONE has implemented opengl in haskell
Yeah I wouldn't recommend t
Pygame is cool, although it does some things differently than other game engines. It makes more sense to me, but it might build some bad habits
i remember there were some freshmen in college who managed to figure out how to get their pygame game to run at 60fps
for a game jam
also iβm absolutely not a programmer (did it in a few classes for my degree and couldnβt wrap my head around it), but iβve heard code academy is pretty good
60fps? hasnt been a problem for me, but maybe they were using an older version
Well it depends on what you're doing. But the statement alone doesn't really say anything.
Im not sure I entirely agree that the logic behind programming languages is usually similar
I know a lot about logic gates, ergo I should be able to learn to program in any language relatively easily
Isn't it? Most of the time there are variables, arrays, operations, branching, loops, functions. And many languages are OOP nowadays or support it so you'll find objects too.
Of course some languages are going to be more complex than others and will have their own quirks but the general skill of putting a problem into an algorithm is the most important and it is more or less the same across most languages.
Honestly I find that those little quirks each language has actually make big differences
Switching from Delphi to Java was hell, as was switching from Java to C
A lot of concepts are just handled very differently
Yeah but well, you chose languages that are at the opposite sides of the spectrum of differences.
I mean I mostly chose em because those are the 3 I learned first, in precisely that order
Cant say C++ was much better
Also game dev uses very different languages as well, its mostly C++, C# and Java IIRC
And HTML5?
Oh and Lua, which is also pretty different
HTML isn't a programming language so it can hardly be compared but I suppose you mean JS
Well, from my experience, when I knew how to code in Python I could figure out how to do something simple in JavaScript, Java, PHP, Bash...
The languages are wildly different but there's a big difference between knowing something else at least and having 0 programming knowledge, which is what I meant.
HTML5 tho
And twine uses HTML
Also JavaScript is silly
HTML is never a programming language but itβs used for game-making
See the famous Watman lecture
You don't use HTML for programming alone tho
But I really just emphasized the difference because it wouldn't fair to compare it with the rest, because HTML is something completely different. (sorry I didn't want it to sound rude)
HTML + CSS is more like a graphics library in that context
(you didnβt sound rude at all)
Anyway my main issue with game dev is that being a solo dev is nearly impossible nowadays, while working in a group means Id have to find others and potentially compromise on my "vision"
We also have simplified languages that are engine specific
hire some talents on fiver maybe
Thats unlikely to work in the long run
Nope, good for a pilot though
Realistically Id just need to find likeminded folks, but thats easier said than done
So when you hire after producing the pilot, the candidates will know your vision and follow that
If you try to find people without having the pilot it will be harder
Plus all of that is something for future me to worry about
At least we are likeminded in the sense that we both want to work with likeminded people lol
I suppose that the best you can do solo is produce a gameplay demo with programmer art and worry about the rest later
For now I decided to make the one type of game that is doable solo
An Ace Attorney esque game
Course my art needs to be better, but
Thats doable as well
Eventually
One thing you can do is join a couple of game jams, play the games there, and if anything clicks with you you make sure to get in touch with the game's maker. Some people will definitely message you if they like your game too! That's my plan for 2020, at least
itch.io makes all of that incredibly easy
A question just crossed my mind, would you rather play a game with great music and bad art or a great looking game with mediocre soundtrack (or no soundtrack at all)?
The latter
You can just put external music to make up for it
You cannot do the same for art
Fair point (since then it's not really a disadvantage). But in the case you couldn't?
The thing with bad art is that it can be played off as a strength and make for some interesting visuals in a way (Baldi comes to mind), having simple sprites also make the characters easier to draw >> it's easier for the player to connect (Seemed especially true for Undertale). Music on the other hand, if it's bad from the get-go, there isn't much that can be done to save it. So I'd rather pick the former
Even then Id favour art
Touhou had awful character arts the first few games but it was still popular/hyped because the gameplay plus music were both really good
True
And team Shanghai Alice was one man
Hollow Knight w as made by a very small team.
true, but even w a three person team there are a lot of other people in the credits
video games aren't really an auteur field
eh, nothing is really an auteur field besides maybe painting
i have personally made games "alone" but i was relying on a lot of code written by hundreds of people
There really are just too many moving parts
One guy being a writer, gameplay designer, coder, artist, musician, sound designer, animator and potentially even salesman is unrealistic
Hence why the types of games where a one-guy team can work usually cut down on some number of these
Or massive amounts of time is invested in all areas causing the titles process to take years
Right
And then thereβs Undertale and Deltarune, where everything save the art was created by Toby Fox.
I'd rather write my own music than art hah

I cannot write music at all, so I stick to trying to make art
Its funny actually, Ive got good musical hearing, but a complete lack of music theory knowledge, or compositional skills
listening is like 95% of composition, at least now that we have computer composition software that can playback as you write
See the thing is, I can tell when something sounds off, but that doesnt mean I can think of a combination that doesnt
Yeah, it's kinda like drawing isn't easy just because you can see what's being drawn
if drawing was as simple as "that looks pretty" and then you create a masterpiece, I'd be much better at it
I've been slowly developing my musical sense over years and while I am relatively confident writing some melodies on top of a harmonic base I'm still not able to put together a whole track and usage of percussion is largerly a mystery to me. Resources are necessary, some basic music theory, and often you need to hear just something that gives you the basic intuition.
Still better than my drawing which is.... ugh.
@finite fog Sorry for the (second) ping, but isn't your profile pic a 'jho gem? Was upvoting your feedback and it just occurred to me it looks familiar π
I kinda know that feel in regards to music. I've been in choruses/choirs, I've had classes in both the flute and guitar, and I taught myself basics in piano.
I have near pitch perfect hearing... but I can't compose anything... and I can't read music.
I did everything by ear.
I'm basically Nick Cannon in Drumline.
blegh that movie
i know XD
I used to play the Clarinet/Saxophone for combined 9 years. I loved the Sax, but my Clarinet teacher has permanently killed my interest in playing or composing. I find no joy in music anymore.
Just learn how to read music. That part is easy.
I don't have a mind for it, personally.
Perfect pitch is not something everyone has.
Reading music is rather simple, really. Simple rules, yet still easily moldable.
I learned to sight-read music notation before learning my instrument (Horn) and then I spent 12 years getting classically trained
Unless I've been lied to, Armored Core 4's soundtrack was composed by someone who can't read music, either.
Like, there was a time I recognized some of the notes. But my brain just doesn't really want to accept it.
(I played trumpet for 7 years)
Though I found music theory to be.. unfathomably boring.
Had to take them on the side, and I skipped every single lesson after a year.
I did band for the entirety of middle school and high school, and also did 5 years of Drum Corps International
My greatest talent is anything that related to writing, be it essays or fiction or editing... But I'd never tell someone else it's easy to learn. That's just me, though. Because I'm hyper aware of the fact that some people just learn in particular ways.
So, to me, learning to read music is not easy just like how for some people being able to slam out a research paper in two hours isn't easy.
But can I do that no problem? Yes.
I found writing to be my preferred method of creative outlet. I can't compose or draw, but I can sing and write. So there's that. And it just so happens that Finnish allows for some really beautiful sounding stories 'n' writing in general.
I did a small corps (which died later) for 2 years and then Blue Stars for the remaining 3
and you should've. I was a great player and horrifically bad dancer/marcher and still made it to the top 9
I've been playing instruments for, hm, 15 years now, but I still struggle reading notes sometimes
Not sure why, but they just refuse to associate with the sound of the key on the keyboard
I'll admit to having problems learning the notes on a non treble-clef brass instrument
gimme a trumpet or horn and I'll play it just fine sight reading
not so much with anything else
Which is why I'm uncertain if Ive got perfect pitch or not, I cant test it because of that
Could be that I have perfect pitch but also musical dyslexia
there is also the distinction between having good relative pitch vs absolute pitch
I had really good relative pitch when I was still "trained"
Yeah I know, relative pitch requires reference notes while absolute doesnt
Thing is, if you can't get the notes sorted at all, it's hard to figure out if you've got it or not
Suppose I'm not getting much use out of it either way
Yeah that part is easy, I just can't get my brain to associate em
only weirdness in music note names is between B and C and E and F
Once I figured out which one is C I can just count up
But I don't identify C very quickly
Dunno why
afaik, everyone I know with perfect pitch basically just bashed on labelled piano keys until they could do it without that reference
Well doesn't matter, I ain't gonna be composing music any time soon
Or ever, most likely
perfect pitch is more useful for performers anyways
I suppose it is
only reason you'd want it as a composer is if you wanted to transcribe something that they won't just hand you a copy of
I wonder, is there an equivalent to perfect pitch for colours?
according to the study Randall Monroe (creator of xkcd) did, emphatic no
Interesting
some people are ok-ish at guessing hex codes
no two brains read colours the same way though
pc screens maybe, but humans? very unlikely
there's quite a bit of variance between screens too
same could be said of sounds
sounds are a lot easier to hear very similar sounds to the point that it's easier to agree it's the same
but colours have significantly wider variation
in term of perception
sounds are much wider waves, see
On a sidenote I should stop coming up with stories I know I'm never gonna write/turn into a game
same
it's fun though
It is, but it's wasted potential
not necessarily
I should also get around to finishing any
if you do actually write things/make games, it's good mental practice
argh
that's been my one major downfall
I can't for the life of me art
but all my writing ideas enter my brain in comic form
I can sketch some things reasonably well, but it's mostly bad
marry someone who can art and team up
@slow plover you should absolutely still draw comic or thumbnail it anyways. don't lose those ideas! you wont remember them if you don't record them
oh, I'm writing one idea down in movie script-ish format
turns out my brain goes from "broad strokes overall concept" to "5 pages of actual comic script" in about 30 minutes
that's a pretty good rate if you ask me
Sol, step one is probably already more complicated than just learning art
it doesn't include things like "what do the characters look like" or "can you actually be descriptive enough about what you want to see to be useful" though
that definitely takes a bit longer
lol i know what you mean
Coming up with Visual Designs is the part that's fastest for me
Its composition I struggle with
see, I'm not even into the world of art enough to know the difference
Also Dialogue
ahaha for me it's a bit of the oppsite, i can sketch out a composition that i like, but actually creating unique designs that don't seem too rehashed is quite difficult for me
i also suck at writing
just need to practice more
I can do the writing and flow of dialogue ok, just can't do art in any capacity
we should trade skills for a day
i can do both okay but have no time or energy
sometimes it feels like the easier way is to find a well-paying job, marry someone who does art or writing good, and team up with them and let them work on it full time
The thing with designs is that they will never be completely unique
splitting the work (and having an accountability buddy) can help with energy problems
That shouldn't be the goal
Instead have designs that are at least a fresh take on an established concept
No idea if I'm any good at writing since I never finish anything more than world building, and world building is the easy part
But it's at least something I can learn quickly ish
or just ignore the originality thing completely except for a final "sanity check" to make sure you didn't unintentionally copy something someone else made wholesale
