Kristen Stewart with short hair is going to get me to watch so many movies I wasn't otherwise going to watch

#

See: Underwater

wide ember
#

they should have exploited her butch lesbian look sooner instead of trying to shove her into the useless view point girl in a hetero-romance-ish movie roles

#

what the movies did with her at first was the equivalent of forcing david brian gilbert into non-nosense manly man roles

#

now that she looks amazing, I hope the writing will be good too

serene tulip
#

I have like, literally no faith that charlies angels will be anything more than a Trying-to-be-woke half-effort jokefest

#

Underwater looks OK, but it leans too scary for my usual tastes

wide ember
#

I want her in a sci-fi hacker thriller

serene tulip
#

can it be cyberpunk?

#

can we go back in time and make her the Major in a live action ghost in the shell that is actually good on its own merits and not just an attempt to make fans happy by redoing the most famous scenes from the show and movies?

#

and can they make batou the rock?

#

that'd be funny

wide ember
#

the rock doesn't look half as good as batou did in my heart

#

is there someone closer to idris elba for batou's role?

serene tulip
#

terry crews as batou?

#

πŸ˜„

wide ember
#

I guess that works, I'm trying to remember who was the male actor who was playing with his tiny puppy and decided to throw the puppy in the pool, and upon realizing that his puppy wasn't good at swimming he immediately jumped into the pool and rescued his puppy, but his cellphone died as result

serene tulip
#

actually, jason Momoa would probably make an amazing batou

wide ember
#

because see, batou was willing to risk his life to buy his dog the favourite dog chew and got hacked and almost killed

serene tulip
#

That episode of SAC where batou is infiltrating the military base to spy on the ex boxer is seriously one of my favorites

wide ember
#

batou also spoiled the think tanks into loving him enough to sacrifice their lives for him, and when his coworkers laughed that nobody that mattered got hurt, he looked visibly not agreeing with them

serene tulip
#

Then they made fun of him when he though the major got shot D:

wide ember
#

to be fair, major got like 3 spare bodies waiting at her secret base

#

but the think tanks did die, along with the humans who only obeyed order to capture them

serene tulip
wide ember
#

nooo

#

tachikoma were all so innocent and good, why did they have to die

serene tulip
#

Keep on waiting for the fuchikomas to break out into hushed giggles

wide ember
#

I kind of hoped the secretary/typist/interface gynoids in the drone fliers could also attain sentience, but I guess the whole point is that they don't

#

the identical office lady look gynoids that the tachikoma tricked at least once

serene tulip
#

Well like, they weren't needed for the level of complexity that they were half-aiming for with the tachikomas

wide ember
#

I feel like if they can be jammed with a simple logic paradox they shouldn't be flying anything like

#

if they are coming at you and you can just yell at them "What I am saying is a lie!" and they immediately jam, I believe that's quite a signficant bug

#

then again they are not required to understand anything, all they need is to relay and obey

serene tulip
#

yeah

#

also $10 says that one they "tricked" was actually hacked by the major

#

.>

wide ember
#

huh, I need to rewatch that scene

#

otherwise if two human commanders give mutually exclusive commands they'd implode

serene tulip
#

I mean, I'm pretty sure that's not true, as much as anything in the GITS universe can be called true

#

anyhow

#

is bedtime for me

#

nini

wide ember
#

night

hasty kernel
#

Honestly I didnt think the GitS movie was bad

#

Though it definitely was just an attempt at fanservice, as reboots tend to be

#

I also dont think Crews or Elba would be suited for Batou, their faces are too round

#

You need someone with a face like Dolph Lundgren

wide ember
#

Dolph Lundgren does look like a very good fit

#

the 2017 live action GitS was a fail because most loved the series for the philosophical and intellectual side, but the live action was more of pure action fanservice (so ironically closer to the original manga, but far away from the animated series)

#

and the protagonist name... Motoko Kusanagi is such an esteemed name now, if you have to invent a new english name for her, you can't go less pretentious and pompous and obviously pseudonym than something like Jane Excalibur

hasty kernel
#

I mean, she ultimately was still Motoko Kusanagi

#

Wonder if that was a last minute change

#

But yeah, it was just more of a general action flick

#

Then again, Id argue the GitS movies were a lot more philosophical than the manga they originated from

#

I think they were trying to go for a SAC kinda feel

#

But even SAC had strong philosophical themes, even if they were more subtle

wide ember
#

and more character complexities

hasty kernel
#

Yeah

#

The characters in the movie were largely barely present

#

I dont even think Ishikawa was in it

serene tulip
#

Wasn't she actually banned motoko but the military folks called her Mira or something?

north hamlet
#

yeah

hasty kernel
#

Mira Killian was a false identity given to her

#

She actually was Motoko Kusanagi

#

Which ironically is still not very faithful to the source material

#

Because one of the few things we know about the Major is that "Motoko Kusanagi" isnt actually her real name

serene tulip
#

Like the bones of a good story are there they just refused to actually make anything good with it.

#

Well like, what even is a real name

#

Is kinda like right in the theme

hasty kernel
#

Yeah

#

Hence why I usually just call her "The Major"

serene tulip
#

God gits is so good.

#

What is the self

hasty kernel
#

I also really liked the concept of a "Stand-Alone Complex"

serene tulip
#

We're seeing a lot of that now under the moniker stochastic terrorism.

#

Sort of

hasty kernel
#

Mmh, thats not quite the same thing I dont think

#

A Stand Alone Complex is when a lot of people are imitating the same behaviour/ideology/actions, making it seem like its all one coordinated group rather than many individuals

#

But also one where there is no original

#

Everything is imitated without a source that is being imitated

#

I guess another way of putting it is that its an individual collectivism of sourceless imitation

#

I guess one example in real life would be that cool S

#

You probably know the one I mean

wide ember
#

cool S, sailor moon tapes at the summer camp, mirror rituals, caffeination?

hasty kernel
#

Im not familiar with the last 3 actually

wide ember
#

so those yellow school buses with overhead TVs for summer camps in north america usually have the sailor moon VHS tapes in them

#

brb I'm getting on my bus

hasty kernel
#

Ah

#

Yeah Im not american so I have no experience with that, but that might be the case

serene tulip
#

Also I believe sol is referring to mirror rituals like "if you say bloody Mary in the mirror n times you will summon her"?

hasty kernel
#

I chose the cool S because as far as Im aware, its just about everywhere

#

Thats urban myths, I think those are slightly different

serene tulip
#

Stochastic terrorism might be a bit too overt for true stand alone complex but they're in similar veins.

#

You don't need a virus if you release suggestive media.

hasty kernel
#

In that its individual collectivism? Yeah

#

You dont need an organized group that is prone to falling apart if you just have individuals doing what you suggest

wide ember
#

so guerrilla gardening counts?

hasty kernel
#

Guerrilla ... gardening?

serene tulip
#

I love art museums.

north hamlet
#

guerilla gardening is planting and tending gardens in public spaces without permission from the relevant governing authority

#

basically what you do when your local council is bad at their job

hasty kernel
#

Interesting

#

I guess that would fall under it

north hamlet
#

people also do that kind of stuff for street signs and the like too

serene tulip
#

I feel compelled to shoplift it

#

But shoplifting is wrong and what if I get caught?

upbeat scroll
#

you were doing it for the vine

wide ember

serene tulip

chilly briar

You can post links to images

hardy pond
#

ah okay. like from imgur or something?

buoyant frigate
#

Yep!

hardy pond
#

Thanks!

hasty kernel
#

Huh, this JRPG has a Gladiator Grandma

#

More games should have characters like that

wide ember
#

which game? +_+

hasty kernel
#

Ys VIII

ionic viper
#

no that's just letters

hasty kernel
#

Well they use the roman version of 8

#

I have no idea why its called Ys though

#

Its a shame she is only a side NPC though

#

Though it kinda makes sense since she is clearly very OP

#

There is an enemy type in the game that requires weapons made from a specific metal to even be harmed normally

#

She casually dispatches 2 of them without such a weapon

chilly briar
#

ah yes, V triple L

#

pretty sure games are the only reason I ever learned roman numerals lol

hasty kernel
#

I learned them because of Asterix and Obelix

#

Incidentally the same reason I ended up learning latin

serene tulip
#

For some odd reason school seemed keen on me learning Roman unary.

wide ember
#

Silvia... her upper arms are about as wide as her head...

#

I have finally found another jodariel level buff video game character T-T

#

She has six packs too

#

Muscle grandma should be more common as archetype

upbeat scroll
serene tulip
#

@wide ember you're just going to say that and not link anything?

wide ember
#

The kind of grandma who would feed her grandchildren dragon jerky, probably

faint panther
#

She's got that ultra-high-level RPG armor on, dang.

#

Maybe if she had stuck with low-level gear she wouldn't have that giant scar.

buoyant frigate

upbeat scroll
#

hasty kernel
#

Tbh Silvia's design even makes sense since she is a gladiator

#

Gladiators didn't exactly wear much

#

And yes, muscle grandma should be more common

#

In general old, but strong fighters should be equally represented

raven harbor

What game is that from? DQ11?

Anyone able to help me? I'm trying to get the epic games store, but all I seem to get is the Epic Games Launcher. 😐 I opened the launcher to see if Hades was in there, but it isn't. It only shows Unreal Engine. I'm probably being very dumb or am missing something but I read the FAQ on the epic games site and apparently this is what is supposed to happen. I've owned Hades for a long long time and wanted to play again so... if anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it.

serene tulip
faint panther
#

Good morning, king.

heavy kettle
#

greetings brother

faint panther
#

I just want a game that's basically this:

#

But with full movement in a 3D arena, and also all of the characters have projectile weapons.

hasty kernel
#

Unfortunately having it be in a 3D arena makes this kind of gameplay impossible

faint panther
#

Are you absolutely sure?

hasty kernel
#

Yep

faint panther
#

Dammit.

hasty kernel
#

The main problem comes down to both the fact that with the need to be able to move sideways as well as forward/backward you lose a lot of potential inputs and as a result nuance, while the block-string gameplay becomes impossible as you can just escape out of a blockstring by moving to the side

wide ember
#

if the projectile weapons include lasso/tether type, it could be closer even if it's still not it

hasty kernel
#

Hot take: Perfect guard/dodge is the most important invention in video game history

serene tulip
#

are we talking frame perfect?

#

Rivals of Aether has a 7 frame parry

hasty kernel
#

Frame perfect is a bit too specific

#

But any kind of perfect timing

#

Usually it gives you a bit of leeway

serene tulip
#

RoA has a 3 frame lead up

#

2 frame startup, 7 frame parry, then endlag for another 20 frames

#

at 60 fps

velvet fjord
#

fighting games, maybe, but I'd like to argue that physics is the most important

hasty kernel
#

I was more thinking Action RPG actually

#

Also, idk if physics were really that important

#

If you mean the "relatively realistic" physics

raven harbor
#

I'd argue the concept of a lock-on camera

#

Slash locking on

hasty kernel
#

Interesting take, my main issue is that in most games that had a lock-on camera, I found that using it was more annoying than not using it

raven harbor
#

Z-targeting really is the pinnacle

hasty kernel
#

Z-targetting?

raven harbor
#

Ocarina of Time

hasty kernel
#

Ah, right

#

Also, now that I think about it, I guess the ability to save your progress is the most important innovation

raven harbor
#

Oh, good one

#

Although that's less a mechanic and more a physical tech advancement

hasty kernel
#

True, I guess on a physical level that is the most important one

#

While mechanic-wise I will continue to defend my choice of perfect timing as a gameplay element

faint panther

@autumn pasture (moving) im going to be honest with you. i dont know what metroidvanias are

#

The term is a portmanteau of the game series Metroid and Castlevania. ah...

autumn pasture
#

yea!

#

altho hollow knight is, imo, the best metroidvania ever made (change my mind)

tardy anchor
#

oho....

velvet void
#

Its pretty good, can agree

autumn pasture
#

you know i'm big on Genre Mashups And Looseness but basically, a sidescroller/platformer game w an interconnected map and a system of upgrades/movement abilities that make more of that map accessible to the player as the game goes on

#

which promotes backtracking and a particular playstyle

#

it's got that like, sweet level design

ionic viper
#

man, where's that video i watched abt hollow knight's level design in particular

autumn pasture
#

hollow knight has GOD TIER level design tbh

ionic viper
autumn pasture
#

it reminded me a lot of watching my brother play dark souls!

velvet void
#

Ay, GMT makes great vids about game design

autumn pasture
#

for other reasons too, there's also a similar checkpoint/shortcut system, the boss design, the environmental storytelling......

#

yeah i watch that channel a fair bit

hasty kernel
#

Actually, is it being a sidescrolling platformer a requirement for being a Metroidvania?

#

Alright, reading the wiki page its not required, but typical

#

I do like the concept, though I feel like it shines more in a 3d space than a 2d one

wide ember
#

nier automata was sometimes a metroidvania

autumn pasture
#

i'd definitely like a 3d flying/swimming game metroidvania

wide ember
#

one castle platform required a jump in 3D as shorcut

hasty kernel
#

I mean the general concept is present in games like Crosscode

#

And I feel Crosscode nailed it

#

Ys VIII also did it, but I felt it was a bit weaker on the exploration side

#

In general I like when video games let you explore for explorations sake

#

Now that I think about it, whats the difference between the metroidvania and the adventure genre?

wide ember
#

adventure is usually in a broad open space

#

metroidvania is in limited space where the space itself is presented almost like a character of its own

hasty kernel
#

Oh

#

Well then I like Adventure more

wide ember
#

so even if you have adventure in a deep ocean floor or dungeon, if the space does not have a character and also plot important it's not exactly metrovania I think?

hasty kernel
#

I mean it sounds correct to me

#

Then again, I dont know, I never was deep into the metroidvania genre

wide ember
#

by the name, it sounds like Ys should be metroivania?

hasty kernel
#

Its wide open space actually

wide ember
#

it's named after the france equivalent of atlantis after all

#

so it sounds like there should be a plot important magic land that is semi-sentient

hasty kernel
#

Oh so thats why its called Ys

ionic viper
#

adventure games tend to be more about exploration and puzzle-solving

#

whereas a metroidvania blocks areas of the map from being accessed until you have specific upgrades

wide ember
#

wait but that would make zelda and banjo kazooie sound like metroidvania

hasty kernel
#

Well, the games Im thinking of do also block those areas of the map off

ionic viper
#

there's also less of a focus on combat in adventure games

hasty kernel
#

In the case of Ys, you needed to get the ability to breathe underwater to get to a bunch of areas

#

In crosscode each time you get an elemental upgrade, that unlocks areas as well

#

Hm

#

Maybe Adventure doesnt mean what I thought it meant

wide ember
#

Ys was a sunken city in real life myth so it better

hasty kernel
#

Again, as you might tell by my reaction, Ys doesnt actually feature in Ys VIII

wide ember
#

(the unsunken version is known today as Paris, and legend has that if Paris sinks, then Ys would resurface)

hasty kernel
#

Apparently Ys the city (or an equivalent thereof) was part of Ys 1

#

Which is a game from the eighties

wide ember
#

so the game title is a leftover...

hasty kernel
#

Basically

#

The first game was called that because it featured in the plot

#

Then they made a bunch of sequels

#

Where the subtitle is relevant to the plot

#

On a sidenote, does anyone have recommendations for exploration-heavy games?

#

Preferrably 3d

Nier automata id get if my PC wasnt so shoddy

#

I guess I could get it for PS4

wide ember
#

ha, maybe my deleted save will come to your rescue when you reach that ending

hasty kernel
#

I think Abzu is that game that is a lot like Subnautica but more pretty

wide ember
#

Rime is also great

hasty kernel
#

Oh, Rime looks interesting

#

Ill check it out

#

Also Crosscode is on sale, you should all get it, its really good

wide ember
#

what are the sellpoints of Crosscode?

autumn pasture
#

rime is okay, abzu is very good, hollow knight i'll mention again, aer memories of old was pretty good also, i know ori and the blind forest is a classic but i'm just about to start it

hasty kernel
#

Its level design, and possibility to explore are phenomenal

wide ember
#

random generated maps or designed fixed maps?

hasty kernel
#

Fixed

#

Outside of that, its a pixel 3d ARPG with a fun plot, great characters, charming music and good puzzles

#

Its probably my favourite game from last year

#

Its pretty long though, which can be a plus or a minus depending on how you see it

wide ember
#

depends if it's real length or artificial stretch

hasty kernel
#

Real length

wide ember
#

if all of it are actual content, then that's great, just don't stall the player by make leveling slow down to a crawl or make the player backtrack for hours to get key items

hasty kernel
#

You dont have to grind if thats what youre worried about

wide ember
#

ah good

hasty kernel
#

Length mostly comes from quests, the maps being big and open-ended, and the dungeons you get through being pretty long as well

#

Plus puzzles

#

Some of them are tricky

also can I become a benevolent demon overlord

faint panther
#

pedantic Wouldn't "next decade" be 2021? 😏

hasty kernel
#

Generally people count from the 0th year

#

I think it has to do with terms like "the 90s"

#

Which are what you commonly think of when it comes to decades

#

And which, by neccessity of their title, have to start with the 0th year

faint panther
#

…butβ€”there was no 0th year. We go from -1 BC to 1 AD, thanks to Bede. But yes, the popular view is why most folks partied like it was 1999 when the new millenium didn't really begin until 2001. Like I said, pedantic. πŸ˜„ dives under a rock

hasty kernel
#

Yeah thats for centuries and millenia

#

Decades work differently

upbeat scroll
#

wait whos bede

faint panther
#

If you're content with years 1 AD thru 9 AD being a decade, sure. πŸ˜„

hasty kernel
#

Its year 0 to year 9

#

Because we dont think of decades based on the first year

#

Its not the 202nd decade

#

Its the new 20s

faint panther
#

There was no year 0, though.

hasty kernel
#

Yes

#

But that doesnt matter for decades since were not counting decades from the very first one

faint panther
#

Bede was the Benedictine monk who among other things, according to Wikipedia, "also helped establish the practice of dating forward from the birth of Christ (Anno Domini – in the year of our Lord), a practice which eventually became commonplace in medieval Europe".

hasty kernel
#

Centuries and millenia are put in the context of the first one

#

Decades arent

#

21st century, 2nd millennium

#

But noone says 202nd decade

#

Instead decades are put in the context of their first number

#

Eighties, nineties, so on

#

And since it would be weird for the 80s to not include the year 80

#

They start with the 0th year

faint panther
#

It really just depends on context. Nominally, the "0s" are indeed the years 1 AD thru 9 AD, and nominally the next decade is the group of ten years beginning with 2020. But ordinally, which as you say isn't used much except by pedants, the "next decade" would begin in 2021.

hasty kernel
#

Even ordinally it wouldnt, because decades were never tied to the same system

faint panther
#

And what system is that?

hasty kernel
#

Well, counting based on 1st year AD

#

Decades as an important historical concept didnt really came to be until the 20th century

faint panther
#

Ordinally the first decade AD would be years 1 AD thru 10 AD. Nominally, the 0s (BC or AD) aren't decades at all, but novenniums (or novennia). Remember, in 1999 folks were having this debate about millennia. And centuries. Is 2000 the end of the 20th century or the beginning of the 21st? The end of the 2nd millennium or the start of the 3rd?

#

That's words for ya!

hasty kernel
#

Only if you base what a decade is on the first one

#

But its a concept conceived so late that it was based on the last one

#

And counted backwards

#

Hence why its not the first decades

#

But the 0s

faint panther
#

The original naughties. πŸ˜‰

I've always found it easiest to like...think of the thing I want to do and start from there, then google the best way to do it

tropic garden

There are also high-level design frameworks made to be more user friendly, like ren'py, rpgmaker, etc

#

Unity

plush orbit
#

true true

#

i have ideas now, i honestly never considered modding

#

i kinda snowed in on the whole "gotta make original game" bit of education

tropic garden
#

Making something is important to show that you can - but you don't have to make every single piece of it from scratch

#

You can focus on what you want to design

#

For example if you can't draw or make music, you can use stock images and sounds on top of the code you want to show off

plush orbit
#

yeah

tropic garden
#

Mods are good for that because you have resources already there from the game

plush orbit

you right

autumn pasture

somber ferry
#

iirc epic will waive the fee if you publish on their store though

#

which makes sense given it’s their engine

hasty kernel
#

Yeah

#

But again, thats even less likely for your first project

wise wolf
#

I've got the feeling that all of you who don't know how to code should rather find some programming course before jumping into the pecularities of a game engine. Perhaps even make a simple game without using an engine. Just to get some idea of what you're doing. Copy pasting some code from tutorials into a game engine might work for some time, but I'm afraid that it would become overwhelming really fast. Also because you'd have to learn two things at once, programming AND the engine. Better take it step by step.

Also one thing, most programming languages follow similar logic, so if you learn to write programs in one, it means that you only need to learn the syntax and specific features of the other and perhaps also learn to do the stuff that the previous language did for you (memory management, declaring variables). But you won't have to relearn the entire programmer mindset because that will be the same.

3d games are a nightmare, but I picked up python by making a bunch of little 2d game experiments with pygame

It's not necessarily the best way to learn but it worked for me

wise wolf

I knew a great university level Python online course which was fun and had games as projects every week and gave you a good programming background, but the platform it was on put up some paywalls now and while the course is free, the assignments might be only for those who paid for it (there's no mention of it though so perhaps it is completely free again). If anyone is interested I can DM a link. I don't think any of the engines actually use Python, but I found what I learnt there very valuable and as I've said, it was fun.

#

I know programming, but I can't recommend my path if you're interested in game programming... though learning haskell first made me able to pick up new languages within about 30 minutes of working with them

haskell is also horrifically unsuited to game programming

#

(if only because the nerds who use/work on it are pretty much totally uninterested in making it work)

upbeat scroll
#

I'm sure SOMEONE has implemented opengl in haskell

slow plover
#

it's just C bindings, afair

#

which are kinda stupid hard to work with

upbeat scroll
#

Yeah I wouldn't recommend t

#

Pygame is cool, although it does some things differently than other game engines. It makes more sense to me, but it might build some bad habits

somber ferry
#

i remember there were some freshmen in college who managed to figure out how to get their pygame game to run at 60fps

#

for a game jam

#

also i’m absolutely not a programmer (did it in a few classes for my degree and couldn’t wrap my head around it), but i’ve heard code academy is pretty good

upbeat scroll
#

60fps? hasnt been a problem for me, but maybe they were using an older version

wise wolf
#

Well it depends on what you're doing. But the statement alone doesn't really say anything.

hasty kernel
#

Im not sure I entirely agree that the logic behind programming languages is usually similar

serene tulip
#

I know a lot about logic gates, ergo I should be able to learn to program in any language relatively easily

wise wolf
#

Isn't it? Most of the time there are variables, arrays, operations, branching, loops, functions. And many languages are OOP nowadays or support it so you'll find objects too.

#

Of course some languages are going to be more complex than others and will have their own quirks but the general skill of putting a problem into an algorithm is the most important and it is more or less the same across most languages.

hasty kernel
#

Honestly I find that those little quirks each language has actually make big differences

#

Switching from Delphi to Java was hell, as was switching from Java to C

#

A lot of concepts are just handled very differently

wise wolf
#

Yeah but well, you chose languages that are at the opposite sides of the spectrum of differences.

hasty kernel
#

I mean I mostly chose em because those are the 3 I learned first, in precisely that order

#

Cant say C++ was much better

#

Also game dev uses very different languages as well, its mostly C++, C# and Java IIRC

#

And HTML5?

#

Oh and Lua, which is also pretty different

wise wolf
#

HTML isn't a programming language so it can hardly be compared but I suppose you mean JS
Well, from my experience, when I knew how to code in Python I could figure out how to do something simple in JavaScript, Java, PHP, Bash...
The languages are wildly different but there's a big difference between knowing something else at least and having 0 programming knowledge, which is what I meant.

wide ember
#

HTML5 tho

hasty kernel
#

Oh

#

Yeah thats fair I guess

wide ember
#

And twine uses HTML

hasty kernel
#

Also JavaScript is silly

wide ember
#

HTML is never a programming language but it’s used for game-making

hasty kernel
#

See the famous Watman lecture

wise wolf
#

You don't use HTML for programming alone tho
But I really just emphasized the difference because it wouldn't fair to compare it with the rest, because HTML is something completely different. (sorry I didn't want it to sound rude)

#

HTML + CSS is more like a graphics library in that context

wide ember
#

(you didn’t sound rude at all)

hasty kernel
#

Anyway my main issue with game dev is that being a solo dev is nearly impossible nowadays, while working in a group means Id have to find others and potentially compromise on my "vision"

wide ember
#

We also have simplified languages that are engine specific

#

hire some talents on fiver maybe

hasty kernel
#

Thats unlikely to work in the long run

wide ember
#

Nope, good for a pilot though

hasty kernel
#

Realistically Id just need to find likeminded folks, but thats easier said than done

wide ember
#

So when you hire after producing the pilot, the candidates will know your vision and follow that

#

If you try to find people without having the pilot it will be harder

hasty kernel
#

Plus all of that is something for future me to worry about

wise wolf
#

At least we are likeminded in the sense that we both want to work with likeminded people lol

#

I suppose that the best you can do solo is produce a gameplay demo with programmer art and worry about the rest later

hasty kernel
#

For now I decided to make the one type of game that is doable solo

#

An Ace Attorney esque game

#

Course my art needs to be better, but

#

Thats doable as well

#

Eventually

fast tinsel
#

One thing you can do is join a couple of game jams, play the games there, and if anything clicks with you you make sure to get in touch with the game's maker. Some people will definitely message you if they like your game too! That's my plan for 2020, at least

#

itch.io makes all of that incredibly easy

wise wolf
#

A question just crossed my mind, would you rather play a game with great music and bad art or a great looking game with mediocre soundtrack (or no soundtrack at all)?

hasty kernel
#

The latter

#

You can just put external music to make up for it

#

You cannot do the same for art

wise wolf
#

Fair point (since then it's not really a disadvantage). But in the case you couldn't?

fast tinsel
#

The thing with bad art is that it can be played off as a strength and make for some interesting visuals in a way (Baldi comes to mind), having simple sprites also make the characters easier to draw >> it's easier for the player to connect (Seemed especially true for Undertale). Music on the other hand, if it's bad from the get-go, there isn't much that can be done to save it. So I'd rather pick the former

hasty kernel
#

Even then Id favour art

wide ember
#

Touhou had awful character arts the first few games but it was still popular/hyped because the gameplay plus music were both really good

hasty kernel
#

True

wide ember
#

And team Shanghai Alice was one man

hasty kernel
#

ZUN, yeah

#

But things have changed since then tbh

faint panther
#

Hollow Knight w as made by a very small team.

autumn pasture
#

true, but even w a three person team there are a lot of other people in the credits

#

video games aren't really an auteur field

upbeat scroll
#

eh, nothing is really an auteur field besides maybe painting

#

i have personally made games "alone" but i was relying on a lot of code written by hundreds of people

hasty kernel
#

There really are just too many moving parts

#

One guy being a writer, gameplay designer, coder, artist, musician, sound designer, animator and potentially even salesman is unrealistic

#

Hence why the types of games where a one-guy team can work usually cut down on some number of these

chilly briar
#

Or massive amounts of time is invested in all areas causing the titles process to take years

hasty kernel
#

Right

bitter surge
#

And then there’s Undertale and Deltarune, where everything save the art was created by Toby Fox.

upbeat scroll
#

thats a big "but"

#

art is a huge huge timesink

wise wolf
#

I'd rather write my own music than art hah

serene tulip
hasty kernel
#

I cannot write music at all, so I stick to trying to make art

#

Its funny actually, Ive got good musical hearing, but a complete lack of music theory knowledge, or compositional skills

serene tulip
#

I lifted 405lbs yesterday at the gym

#

8 plates baybee

slow plover
#

listening is like 95% of composition, at least now that we have computer composition software that can playback as you write

hasty kernel
#

See the thing is, I can tell when something sounds off, but that doesnt mean I can think of a combination that doesnt

wise wolf
#

Yeah, it's kinda like drawing isn't easy just because you can see what's being drawn

velvet fjord
#

if drawing was as simple as "that looks pretty" and then you create a masterpiece, I'd be much better at it

wise wolf
#

I've been slowly developing my musical sense over years and while I am relatively confident writing some melodies on top of a harmonic base I'm still not able to put together a whole track and usage of percussion is largerly a mystery to me. Resources are necessary, some basic music theory, and often you need to hear just something that gives you the basic intuition.

#

Still better than my drawing which is.... ugh.

cerulean frost
#

@finite fog Sorry for the (second) ping, but isn't your profile pic a 'jho gem? Was upvoting your feedback and it just occurred to me it looks familiar πŸ˜›

honest glade
#

I kinda know that feel in regards to music. I've been in choruses/choirs, I've had classes in both the flute and guitar, and I taught myself basics in piano.

#

I have near pitch perfect hearing... but I can't compose anything... and I can't read music.

#

I did everything by ear.

#

I'm basically Nick Cannon in Drumline.

slow plover
#

blegh that movie

honest glade
#

i know XD

scarlet chasm
#

I used to play the Clarinet/Saxophone for combined 9 years. I loved the Sax, but my Clarinet teacher has permanently killed my interest in playing or composing. I find no joy in music anymore.

faint panther
#

Just learn how to read music. That part is easy.

honest glade
#

I don't have a mind for it, personally.

faint panther
#

Perfect pitch is not something everyone has.

scarlet chasm
#

Reading music is rather simple, really. Simple rules, yet still easily moldable.

slow plover
#

I learned to sight-read music notation before learning my instrument (Horn) and then I spent 12 years getting classically trained

faint panther
#

Unless I've been lied to, Armored Core 4's soundtrack was composed by someone who can't read music, either.

honest glade
#

Like, there was a time I recognized some of the notes. But my brain just doesn't really want to accept it.

faint panther
#

(I played trumpet for 7 years)

scarlet chasm
#

Though I found music theory to be.. unfathomably boring.

#

Had to take them on the side, and I skipped every single lesson after a year.

slow plover
#

I did band for the entirety of middle school and high school, and also did 5 years of Drum Corps International

honest glade
#

My greatest talent is anything that related to writing, be it essays or fiction or editing... But I'd never tell someone else it's easy to learn. That's just me, though. Because I'm hyper aware of the fact that some people just learn in particular ways.

faint panther
#

Yoooooooo, you played in DCI?

#

Part of me wishes I had tried.

honest glade
#

So, to me, learning to read music is not easy just like how for some people being able to slam out a research paper in two hours isn't easy.

#

But can I do that no problem? Yes.

scarlet chasm
#

I found writing to be my preferred method of creative outlet. I can't compose or draw, but I can sing and write. So there's that. And it just so happens that Finnish allows for some really beautiful sounding stories 'n' writing in general.

slow plover
#

I did a small corps (which died later) for 2 years and then Blue Stars for the remaining 3

#

and you should've. I was a great player and horrifically bad dancer/marcher and still made it to the top 9

hasty kernel
#

I've been playing instruments for, hm, 15 years now, but I still struggle reading notes sometimes

#

Not sure why, but they just refuse to associate with the sound of the key on the keyboard

slow plover
#

I'll admit to having problems learning the notes on a non treble-clef brass instrument

#

gimme a trumpet or horn and I'll play it just fine sight reading

#

not so much with anything else

hasty kernel
#

Which is why I'm uncertain if Ive got perfect pitch or not, I cant test it because of that

#

Could be that I have perfect pitch but also musical dyslexia

north hamlet
#

there is also the distinction between having good relative pitch vs absolute pitch

slow plover
#

I had really good relative pitch when I was still "trained"

hasty kernel
#

Yeah I know, relative pitch requires reference notes while absolute doesnt

#

Thing is, if you can't get the notes sorted at all, it's hard to figure out if you've got it or not

slow plover
#

they're...

#

they're alphabetical?

hasty kernel
#

Suppose I'm not getting much use out of it either way

#

Yeah that part is easy, I just can't get my brain to associate em

slow plover
#

only weirdness in music note names is between B and C and E and F

hasty kernel
#

Once I figured out which one is C I can just count up

#

But I don't identify C very quickly

#

Dunno why

slow plover
#

afaik, everyone I know with perfect pitch basically just bashed on labelled piano keys until they could do it without that reference

hasty kernel
#

Well doesn't matter, I ain't gonna be composing music any time soon

#

Or ever, most likely

slow plover
#

perfect pitch is more useful for performers anyways

hasty kernel
#

I suppose it is

slow plover
#

only reason you'd want it as a composer is if you wanted to transcribe something that they won't just hand you a copy of

hasty kernel
#

I wonder, is there an equivalent to perfect pitch for colours?

slow plover
#

according to the study Randall Monroe (creator of xkcd) did, emphatic no

hasty kernel
#

Interesting

slow plover
#

some people are ok-ish at guessing hex codes

wide ember
#

no two brains read colours the same way though

#

pc screens maybe, but humans? very unlikely

north hamlet
#

there's quite a bit of variance between screens too

slow plover
#

same could be said of sounds

wide ember
#

sounds are a lot easier to hear very similar sounds to the point that it's easier to agree it's the same

#

but colours have significantly wider variation

#

in term of perception

#

sounds are much wider waves, see

hasty kernel
#

On a sidenote I should stop coming up with stories I know I'm never gonna write/turn into a game

slow plover
#

same

wide ember
#

it's fun though

hasty kernel
#

It is, but it's wasted potential

slow plover
#

not necessarily

hasty kernel
#

I should also get around to finishing any

slow plover
#

if you do actually write things/make games, it's good mental practice

hasty kernel
#

I suppose

#

Also I should get good at art so I can make games or maybe comics

slow plover
#

argh

#

that's been my one major downfall

#

I can't for the life of me art

#

but all my writing ideas enter my brain in comic form

hasty kernel
#

I can sketch some things reasonably well, but it's mostly bad

wide ember
#

marry someone who can art and team up

knotty sable
#

@slow plover you should absolutely still draw comic or thumbnail it anyways. don't lose those ideas! you wont remember them if you don't record them

slow plover
#

oh, I'm writing one idea down in movie script-ish format

#

turns out my brain goes from "broad strokes overall concept" to "5 pages of actual comic script" in about 30 minutes

knotty sable
#

that's a pretty good rate if you ask me

hasty kernel
#

Sol, step one is probably already more complicated than just learning art

slow plover
#

it doesn't include things like "what do the characters look like" or "can you actually be descriptive enough about what you want to see to be useful" though

#

that definitely takes a bit longer

knotty sable
#

lol i know what you mean

hasty kernel
#

Coming up with Visual Designs is the part that's fastest for me

#

Its composition I struggle with

slow plover
#

see, I'm not even into the world of art enough to know the difference

hasty kernel
#

Also Dialogue

knotty sable
#

ahaha for me it's a bit of the oppsite, i can sketch out a composition that i like, but actually creating unique designs that don't seem too rehashed is quite difficult for me

#

i also suck at writing

#

just need to practice more

slow plover
#

I can do the writing and flow of dialogue ok, just can't do art in any capacity

knotty sable
#

we should trade skills for a day

wide ember
#

i can do both okay but have no time or energy

#

sometimes it feels like the easier way is to find a well-paying job, marry someone who does art or writing good, and team up with them and let them work on it full time

hasty kernel
#

The thing with designs is that they will never be completely unique

slow plover
#

splitting the work (and having an accountability buddy) can help with energy problems

hasty kernel
#

That shouldn't be the goal

#

Instead have designs that are at least a fresh take on an established concept

#

No idea if I'm any good at writing since I never finish anything more than world building, and world building is the easy part

#

But it's at least something I can learn quickly ish

slow plover
#

or just ignore the originality thing completely except for a final "sanity check" to make sure you didn't unintentionally copy something someone else made wholesale
